HREE EVANGELISTS came to Australia in the latter end of the year 1885—Pastors S. N. Haskell, J. 0. Corliss, and M. C. Israel. Looking back, we cannot but be impressed with the sense of the urgency of their message, as with commendable earnestness and zeal they began to advocate the distinctive truths of the Books of Daniel and the Revelation, to confirm believers in the return of our Lord and in "the com- mandments of God and the faith of Jesus." a human standpoint they could hardly be expected to begin keeping the Sabbath (which might cost the breadwinner his job) and also pay tithe. How could they do it? And yet there was the plain in- struction in the Bible. So we would study it all out together, and then seek encouragement from the Lord to come into full harmony with His Word. Through the years the experiences of new believers have established beyond any doubt my faith in the Lord's ability to fulfil His promises. Now I no longer entertain any fears in presenting the doc- trine of tithing, because I know that the greater the problem faced the more needed is the blessing that comes with faithfulness in this important Christian obligation. In the eyes of the world those who ob- serve the Sabbath and who pay tithe and give offerings regularly are labouring under an apparent handicap. Yet the general prosperity of Seventh-day Advent- ists is evidence that God is working mir- acles for those who obey the divine com- mand.
