She lived in India, teaching young girls adjacent to the slums of Calcutta. During this time, she had many profound and powerful experiences with the poor that guided her to her ultimate vocation.

On September 10, 1946, while riding on a train, Jesus spoke to Mother Teresa. He asked her to start a new religious community called the Missionaries of Charity. This community would serve the poor by embracing poverty and simplicity. Mother was eventually granted permission from Rome and walked into the slums of Calcutta in 1948. She established houses for children, the dying and lepers. Her mission was to ensure that all people received the love of God from her and her Sisters.

Thus will it come about that all Christians, in honoring and imitating their sublime Queen and Mother, will realize they are truly brothers, and with all envy and avarice thrust aside, will promote love among classes, respect the rights of the weak, cherish peace. No one should think himself a son of Mary, worthy of being received under her powerful protection, unless, like her, he is just, gentle and pure, and shows a sincere desire for true brotherhood, not harming or injuring but rather helping and comforting others.”

-Pope Pius XII, from his 1954 Encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam

Understanding the Scriptures for August 18, 2019

Today’s Gospel reading can be very startling. After all, didn’t Jesus come to heal divisions, to bring people together, and to bring peace? Why does Luke’s Gospel have Jesus claiming that he will be a source of division and discord? Isn’t Jesus the “Good Shepherd”? Didn’t he tell us the parables of the “Good Samaritan” and the “Prodigal Son”? Why would Jesus say that families will be at odds with each other? This particular passage seems to stand in contrast to so many things that Jesus had taught. Let us see if we can more deeply understand these words of Jesus.

Jesus begins by telling his disciples that “there is a baptism with which he must be baptized”. Jesus states that he is in anguish until he is able to undergo this baptism. The baptism that Jesus speaks about is his very Passion, where he would be rejected, tortured, and killed. His own people would push the Roman authorities to have him crucified. Why would Jesus long for this?

Jesus longs to give of himself totally and completely for us. He desires to present himself as a living sacrifice on behalf of the world’s sins. In short, he longs to die for us. Christ is the Divine Bridegroom who would do anything for his bride, the Church. This love that burns in the heart of the Son is so intense that it seeks death, because in death the Son can give everything of himself to his beloved.

This intense, divine love is a gift and this gift changes everything. It allows us to have our sins forgiven, our wounds healed, and to be transformed into the person that God created us to be. And, as with any gift, it is free. It is not forced nor coerced. Even though it is exactly what we need, God will not make us “open it”. This is where Christ becomes a source of division.

The gift of redemption that Christ offers to the world demands a response. If we open this gift and embrace it, Christ leads us to change our lives, and to allow everything that we do to be molded by him. What happens when someone embraces Christ, but the rest of his or her family, friends, or coworkers act as if Christ doesn’t exist? There is tension. People feel like they are being judged. People get uncomfortable with their own way of life. These things occur because the disciple of Christ stands in contradiction to so many things that the world embraces, and stands as a reminder that we are not our own god. Many people can’t accept this. They want to dictate their own lives. As a result, there is disharmony and division between the disciple and the world. The two stand in opposition to each other. The disciple of Christ can never compromise his faith and acquiesce to the world. Thus, the love of God has the power to renew, but also to divide.

The person who clings to Christ is a radical sign of divine love and is in contradiction to a culture awash in sin. Thus, the disciple, like Christ, must embrace the cross. To love Jesus means discord in one’s daily life. This is the price of love.
