Even entering the last rotation, the Nittany Lions stood No. 4. It was the pommel horse that propelled Penn State to victory. The Nittany Lions posted a 39.075 in the final rotation, including a 9.950 in the final routine of the pommel horse by defending national champion Brandon Stefaniak, to tally a 231.975 to dethrone defending champion Michigan. The Wolverines finished second with 231.850 points, while conference-rival Iowa was third with 231.525. “I’m still in a little bit of shock right now,” Penn State head coach Randy Jepson said. “We finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago, and I knew we had a great team. I knew all season long that we had the opportunity to win.” TEAM SCORING Brandon Stefaniak’s 9.950 on the pommel [Note: Scores for the top three teams are from the team-final session. GAJDOŠ A. SHORT HISTORICAL NOTES XVI Vol. 11 Issue 3: 355-557 SHORT HISTORICAL NOTES XVI Anton Gajdoš, Bratislava, Slovakia & Ivan Čuk, Faculty of Sport, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia Ph.D. Anton Gajdoš born on 1.6.1940 in Dubriniči (today Ukraine) lives most of his life in Bratislava (ex TCH, nowadays SVK). He comes from gymnastics family (his brother Pavel have world championship medals) and he devoted his life to gymnastics. His last achievement is establishment of Narodna encyklopedia športu Slovenska (www.sportency.sk). Among his passion is collecting photos and signatures of gymnasts. As we tend to forget old champions and important gymnasts, judges and coaches, we decided to publish part of his archive under title Short historical notes. All information on these pages is from Anton’s archives and collected through years. MIROSLAV CERAR (October, 28 1939 Ljubljana, Slovenia) Miroslav Cerar was born to father Ivan (navy officer) and mother Pavla (housekeeper and seamstress). In 1947 he started with gymnastics at TVD Partizan Narodni dom (the first Slovene gymnastics club, established in 1863). His development was extremely fast due to his excellent physical preparation, as he was very flexible and strong. He was between 1958 and 1970 the best gymnast on pommel horse, with great achievements also on other apparatus. He was famous for his scissors and excellent double leg circles, which allowed him to perform Russian circles on pommels. • FORMS of and EXERCISES on the HORIZONTAL BAR DURING the SECON HALF of the 19Th CENTURY
Kaimakamis V., Dallas G., Kaimakamis D.: FORMS OF AND EXERCISES ON THE… Vol. 10 Issue 1: 91 - 98 FORMS OF AND EXERCISES ON THE HORIZONTAL BAR DURING THE SECON HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY Vasilios Kaimakamis1, George Dallas2, Dimitris Kaimakamis 1 1 Aristoteleio Unversity of Thessaloniki - Department of Physical Education and Sport Science Thessaloniki, Greece 2 National and Kapodistrian University of Athens - Physical Education and Sport Scienc, Athens, Greece Historical article Abstract The horizontal bar, from its invention until the middle of the 19th century, underwent several phases of evolution; it remained however, wooden and fixed to the ground. The exercises were static, dynamic, close to the bar, and without amplitude and swing. In the middle of the 19th century, metal bars and then height-adjustable horizontal bars started to appear. From this new and more favourable apparatus more difficult exercises and combinations with swing and amplitude emerged, while the static and dynamic exercises continued. In the 80s, the stabilizers for the wooden pillars appeared, while in the last decade of the 19th century, the iron flexible horizontal bar was constructed with stabilizing chains and a height-adjusting mechanism. Such a horizontal bar was also used in the 1896 Olympics, where exercises with amplitude and swing but also static and dynamic exercises were performed. The aim of this work was to research and highlight the main features of the evolution of the horizontal bar (exercises, regulations and apparatus) in the second half of the 19th century. Keywords: pillar, metal bar, dynamic-static exercises, regulations, artistic gymnastics. INTRODUCTION From its invention (1811-1812), by the same prominent position in modern artistic founder of the German gymnastics system gymnastics competitions since the Ludwig Jahn, the horizontal bar was alternations of various exercises and grips, regarded as an apparatus useful, simple and the speed of the giant swings and especially easy to use.
