THE CITIZENS POST FROM THE BOARDROOM

Good Afternoon All and welcome to the Simplyhealth City Ground for today’s Evo-Stik League South Division One South fixture between Winchester City FC and Highworth Town We would like to issue a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters that have made the journey from Wiltshire and we hope you enjoy your afternoon with us and have a safe journey home. Once again, another busy week at the Simplyhealth City Ground! The week began with the end of a historic FA Cup run, with the Citizens bowing out 4-1 at Torquay United. It signalled the end of a fantastic journey, with the club reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round for the first time in 64 years. Torquay United are a Full- Time professional club and their class shone through but City gave a great account for themselves and left Plainmoor with their heads held high. Thanks to the travelling support that followed the lads down to Devon – it was very much appreciated!

City returned to league duty on Tuesday night with a 1-1 draw away at local rivals, AFC Totton. Oli Bailey had put the Citizens ahead before a volley from Craig Feeney gave the hosts a point. Thursday night saw City make it through to the Third Round of the Southampton Senior Cup. City were 3-0 down at home to Folland Sports, but three goals in the last 25 minutes from Reece Rusher, Filip Frackzek- Krygier and Ant Croucher took the game to penalties, with City coming out 4-2 winners from the spot. Back to today and three points this afternoon is vital for the team – as is your support! #youcitizens THE CITIZENS POST DAVO’S DIARY

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Highworth Town for today’s league match, we wish them a pleasant stay and safe trip home afterwards.

It’s been an eventful week all things considered... firstly the experience of the Torquay game, which whilst not the result we wanted, was a great experience for the lads and we far from disgraced on the day, the support from the terraces and stands was incredible, it was emotional to share that with you all after the game, let’s hope that noise generated can be carried through both home and away as it was incredible. We then had to come back down to earth with a bump on Tuesday with a local derby at Totton, we played some fantastic football in the first half and should have been well ahead but only had 1 excellent goal by Oli Bailey to show for it. 2nd half a good goal by them gave them some momentum and we had to dig in and pick up a decent point on the road. We finally had a Southampton Snr Cup match against Follands to play, a very young side and players needing minutes from 1st team squad was out together, it wasn’t a great display for most of it and we found ourselves 3-0 down, we somehow battled back to get level at 3-3 and eventually won on penalties, first shoot out success from 4 this season incredible. You have to give huge credit to the character of the lads to battle back and find a way of getting through although the performance was not what we would have hoped, it’s a good learning curve for these lads though.

Player news we are without Joe Hayward after his sending off last week (which was extremely harsh) - also George Short and Liam Gilbert are out of contention still, Brett Cunningham, Josh Tombs and Josh Corner who all played on Thursday represented Hampshire on Friday and so are also not involved as we cannot overwork these young lads.

It’s time to really knuckle down and concentrate on the league and try and push ourselves up the table, today will be tough just as most games are in this league, however if we can get our excellent home displays that we have been renowned for then we will have every chance.

Enjoy the game! Up the citizens!

THE CITIZENS POST MATCH REPORT – BY MALCOLM CLARKE TORQUAY UTD 4-1 WCFC

Winchester's great FA Cup run which had seen them eliminate two higher division clubs despite being drawn away from home, and also beat a team who had beaten them in six previous encounters came to an end when they were beaten 4-1 by a Torquay team who have been in good form of late under new manager Gary Johnson. Nevertheless, it was a memorable experience in many ways with a coachload of supporters who cheered their team throughout the game and put up sixteen banners behind the goal to add to the colourful atmosphere and their number included Vince Rusher father of Reece and a notable player in his day, with Reece having many other supporters to cheer him on as he came on as substitute later in the game. However, the team as a whole showed great appreciation of the supporters by at the end of the game coming onto the supporter’s coach and shaking their hands individually which was a magnificent gesture. Winchester were playing in the 4th qualifying round of the competition for the first time in over 60 years, whereas Torquay had played in the 1st round proper every season from 1925/26 to 2013/14 and had been in the 4th qualifying round every subsequent season. Their 1-0 win against a West Ham team containing Phil Parkes and Alvin Martin, and their two late goals to earn a replay against Tottenham Hotspur team containing Jimmy Greaves and Alan Mullery are very much part of FA Cup folklore. For the match, itself Winchester made one change to the starting line-up from Tuesday with Tyrell Mitford coming in for Rusher who was on the bench, while former Winchester City favourite Brett Williams was on the Torquay bench. Jamie Reid was their hat-trick hero of the previous week and his ability at free kicks first came to the attention of local fans six years ago, when he scored a last- minute winner for Dorchester in Ian Baird's last midweek match as Eastleigh manager. The recently installed Torquay manager Gary Johnson has managed the Latvian national team, Bristol City and was at the helm when Cheltenham returned to the football league. Winchester started the game promisingly and had an effort blocked early on, but for the home team both Saikou Janneh and Asa Hall both had shots that went narrowly wide, while Reid had an effort deflected for a corner and Brad Gale cleated on the goal line at the expense of a corner, but Winchester were playing with great determination and getting in some good blocks to frustrate the home team. When Torquay's first goal came in the 38th minute it had an air of good fortune about it. Many people thought that Simba Mlambo had been fouled in the build up to it and then Kalvin Kalala's shot was deflected past goalkeeper Ryan Pryce into the net. and was 2-0 three minutes later when Janneh headed home a cross from Reid and in added on time at the end of the first half when although Ryan Pryce made a good save from Reid Connor Lemonheigh-Evans was on hand to score. Just before the third goal Winchester had a free kick in a dangerous position, but Mitford's effort was blocked. With the three late first half goals giving them a clear initiative Torquay pressed at the start of the second half and forced Ryan Pryce to make one good save, however, in the 54th minute they made it 4-0 when Liam Davis cut the ball back for Lemonheigh-Evans to score his second. At that stage with 4 goals scored in 16 minutes one feared that there were more Torquay goals to come, but to their great credit Winchester kept battling and although Pryce was called into action a couple of times Joe Cook had an effort saved and Jamie Barron had a couple of free kicks just off target. The visitors pulled a goal back when Oli Bailey broke clear and was fouled by the home goalkeeper who was booked as a result, with Joe Hayward converting the resultant penalty. Hayward then received a second yellow card for throwing the ball away and although the referee was consistent in that he booked a home player for proceeding with his attempt on goal even when the referee had already blown his whistle for an infringement one felt that a final warning would have sufficed in this case. Winchester introduced Rusher, Joe Griggs and Brett Cunningham as substitutes during the game's second period and the ten men of Winchester continued to battle with the remainder of the game passing without major incident, although Brett Williams who had come on as substitute had one effort that went narrowly wide. Winchester were one of only three clubs in the 4th qualifying round who play at step 5 and below and the only one of these in the Southern half of the draw. Manager Craig Davis heaped praise on his side afterwards saying "Everyone is proud of what we have achieved during this cup run". Before the game a minute's silence was observed in respect of two long serving members and one youngster from Torquay football club who have recently passed away.

THE CITIZENS POST MALCOLM’S MUSINGS

Highworth Town joined this league from the Hellenic League Premier Division at the start of this season having finished third in that league the previous season, having in previous years finished first and second. I actually first heard of Highworth which is about 6 miles from Swindon when I used to pass through the town on the way to Clanfield (Oxon) matches. One of the players of the team I used to follow goalkeeper Des Hobbs used to live in Highworth, while another John Fisher later became the club’s manager and was in charge of the team that reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase in 2014/15. At the time the football club were playing in Wiltshire football. Prior to joining the Hellenic League, they had played in the Swindon and District, Wiltshire Combination and Wiltshire County Leagues. They spent 10 seasons in Division 1 of the Hellenic League, finishing in the top half of the table in eighth of these, before after finishing third (their highest position to date) they were promoted to the Premier Division. They were in the Hellenic League Premier Division for 22 years, having finished in the bottom three for the first three of these, they subsequently only failed to finish in the top half of the table on four further occasions. In 2004/05 they were Premier Division champions, finishing 1 point ahead of a Didcot Town, who had one point deducted and had a superior goal difference in the year they won the FA Vase. They also finished runners up in 1999/00 and last season was their second third place finish. In 2003/04 they reached the 3rd qualifying round of the F A Cup and in the process of reaching the semi-finals of the F A Vase in 2014/15 they won through seven rounds before losing to North Shields in the semi-final. Highworth Town also caters for juniors and ladies, and in 2011 formed their first ladies team, and boys and girls as young as 4 or 5 are able to join the club by attending the Saturday morning sessions. One of the goals in Highworth’s Wiltshire Senior Cup final with Purton in the 1988/89 season was shown on ITV in the Saint and Greavsie programme, which was hosted by Ian St John and Jimmy Greaves. Tonight, will be the first time I have seen Highworth Town play although I have visited the grounds of some of the other clubs who come from the Swindon area such as Purton, Pinehurst and Cricklade. Highworth have made a reasonable start to football at this level and at the time of writing were the leading scorers in the division having only lost one of their first eight league games. After having twice put back this match due to our cup commitments it is good to finally get this match played, especially as we are now a bit behind with our league fixtures. However, with both teams not involved in today’s F A Trophy ties this provided an ideal opportunity to do so. Both teams exited the FA Trophy at the very first hurdle and there appears a randomness in determining who plays in the extra preliminary round of the competition. In the FA Vase New College Swindon last year lost 10-0 in the extra preliminary round and had a very poor league season, but this season received a bye to the Preliminary round where this season they were beaten 14-0, so I think the principle applies to both FA Competitions, and this is an observation rather than a complaint as such.
