I randomly came across this book on Amazon one day, and decided to give it a shot. I just thought, for all the games I play, it would be cool to learn a bit about some of the actual work that goes into making them — specifically writing. It came very highly rated as well. As of writing this, it has 4. The basic problem with the book, in one sentence, is that there are less than 10 pages of practical and useful tactics about how to tackle some The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design the challenges The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design writing for a video game, and then there are about pages of common sense that most people should already know. The problem, and perhaps this is my own fault for buying this book on a whim and not researching it first, is that almost all of this information is written as if the reader has recently entered or is about to enter the industry as a professional video game writer. My problem is that it just has very little to do with actual writing and actual design. The authors The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design trying to demonstrate how this was one of the first popular sitcoms, which was an evolution out of film onto the small screen. This makes sense, except for the puzzling part where specific characters from the show are mentioned, with no background or explanation as to who they are or what they do. I just happened to know what it was because my grandparents watched it when I was young, and I vaguely remember it being on in the background. This seems like a small point to make, but this is something that comes up in the very first pages of the book, and I felt that it set the tone for what my ultimate conclusion about the book would become: the authors have no idea who they are writing this for. I would have liked to The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design more references to actual video games. Some kind of acknowledgement of these kind of paradoxes would have been helpful. What are some examples of other games that attempted this but failed? Why did they fail? What could they have done better? This book has none, and I mean noneof that kind of analysis of actual games. Metal Gear Solid 2 was just an example off the top of my head. But there is one game that I have to say was criminally excluded: . Any gamer worth their salt knows that Silent Hill 2 is one of the most psychologically deep games ever made. The game is overflowing with symbolism and manifestations of psychological trauma as the lead character lives out a nightmare fueled by guilt. If anything, this book inspired me to maybe give it a shot, but for the wrong reasons. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account.
