Download Catalog About Coan Engineering Coan Engineering was founded in 1976, by Dave Coan, as a two-man operation in a small Kokomo, Indiana garage. Kokomo is a town rich in automo- tive heritage, dating back to Elwood Haynes’ his- toric horseless carriage ride of 1894. As a racer him- self, Dave set out to oơ er a better and more refi ned product targeted initially at the drag racing market. The main goals of Coan Engineering in 1976 were performance, reliability, and commitment to its customers. Coan Engineering played a major role in introduc- ing the fi rst transbrake for the Powerglide, TH400, and TH350 transmissions, now a standard in the industry. Coan Engineering also pioneered the use of fabricated steel stators in its maximum perfor- mance torque converters to withstand the rigors of extreme horsepower. Coan Engineering continues to lead the industry in torque converter develop- ment with a complete line of CNC machined billet aluminum stators. The commitment at Coan Engi- neering to be at the top of product development has lead to a state-of-the-art engineering department equipped with the latest in CAD/CAM design and modeling software. Product manufacturing is done with state-of-the-art CNC turning and machining centers featuring full 5-axis capability to insure ex- acting tolerances. Believe it or not there’s no right or wrong answer; they both work well when built properly for the appli- cation. The necessity of a sprag in a perfor- mance converter is determined by the type of vehicle and style of racing. A spragless converter will never be faster than one with a sprag, but that doesn’t mean a sprag is always the best choice. Often times a car with a high horsepower-to- weight ratio can run both converters and see “Super Sprag” negligible diơ erence in performance.     The GP in Canada by Tim Dye ontiacs had always been built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada since their inception in 1926. Because of an import duty the Canadian government had placed on allP American built cars (which was quite substantial) brought into Canada, and a more price-conscious consumer, GM found it favorable to place parts from the Chevrolet parts bin on their Canadian built Pontiacs. They includ- ed major components such as the drivetrain and frame. Interior and exterior trim made up of various U.S. built Pontiacs were mixed in as well, then throw in the 1966 Grande Canadian nomenclature that included such cars as the Strato- Parisienne Chief, Laurentian, Parisienne, Beaumont and Acadian and this Sport Coupe made for some interesting cars. The import duty was lifted in 1965 but unique models with strange drivetrain combinations and unheard of names in the U.S. continued through 1970. By the following year cars on both sides of the border were pretty much identical. But during that time after the import duty was lifted and the unique Canadian cars ended there was a new model introduced and it would very much resemble its cousin to the south, the Grand Prix. Starting in 1966 and running through the 1968 model year Canadian buyers were offered a Grande Parisienne. At a quick glance it looked every bit like a Grand Prix but it included a lot of those Canadian trim and drivetrain twist that I referred to earlier. The 1966 Grande Parisienne was the top of the line, the most noticeable differences were the name badges and the uphol- stery.

The grandson of an early Michigan governor, William C. “Billy” Durant was born in 1861. By the 1890s, he was a highly successful manufacturer of horse-drawn carts that were distributed globally. Durant moved into auto manufacturing when business associates convinced him to manage the fledgling Buick Motor Co. late in 1904. Spectacular success at Buick gave him the wherewithal to found General Motors in 1908. Durant added Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Oakland and other brands to the GM roster, before a 1910 banking crisis forced him out. 4. Looking to build a new automobile after leaving GM, the irrepressible Billy Durant made a deal with Louis Chevrolet to produce the well-known racer’s dream car.

In order to avoid arbitrary decisions made by the three officers, and to obtain additional viewpoints, it was decided to appoint a Board of Directors consisting of the officers plus four additional members. These mem­ bers were selected for their obvious interest in the Society, and also picked for their geographical location to be fairly representative of our widespread member­ ship. The following have accepted membership on the Board: John Conde, Ralph Dunwoodie, John Peckham and Herman Smith. Smith was selected as a spQkesman, as it were, for the non-U.S. members.
