NATIONAL SPORT 2016 - 2017 SCHOOL APPLICATION 2016/2017 NATIONAL SPORT SCHOOL APPLICATION: ADMISSIONS PROCESS The Calgary Olympic Development Association, operating as WinSport (“WinSport”) and the National Sport School (“NSS”), seek applications for enrollment in the NSS from prospective student-athletes who pursue, vigorously and with unbridled enthusiasm, excellence in athletics, academics, and their personal growth and development. The NSS aims “to produce future Olympic & World Champions with an excellent academic education”. The NSS employs a multi-step application process which is described below. In order for a prospective student-athlete’s application to progress through this process, each step must be successfully completed. This will include favourable reviews and approvals by the NSS’ Admissions Committee (the “Admissions Committee”). The Admissions Committee may take into consideration a variety of objective and subjective considerations in reviewing a student-athlete’s application, including those referred to in this application package and any other considerations the Admissions Committee deems relevant. The applicant must also meet the academic requirements of The Calgary Board of Education (“CBE”). It is strongly emphasized that enrolment in the NSS is highly competitive and admission to the NSS cannot be guaranteed. At each step, it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure all necessary documents and other requirements are completed and (where applicable) received by the NSS within any required deadlines. At each step, applications which are incomplete or late MAY NOT be considered by the Admissions Committee, which may result in the student-athlete’s application being rejected. Information describing each of the steps that must be successfully completed for admission to the NSS is set out below. Physical tasks will cover a comprehensive range of elements, and span challenges that are specific in nature (e.g. speed, stamina, suppleness) as well as more general (e.g. obstacle courses, cognitive function). After review of the various assessments by the Admissions Committee, applicants will be advised of whether an invitation to progress to ‘STEP 3: Interviews, Facility tour, Information & FAQs’ will be extended. STEP 3: Interviews, Facility Tour, Information & FAQs. The time spent at the Institute during this step of the application process will involve an interview with the applicant and his/her parent(s)/guardian(s), together with sport/athleticism and academic representatives from several organizations, including, but not limited to the CBE, the Canadian Sport Institute and WinSport. Applicants invited to participate in STEP 3 will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the facilities, key personnel, lifestyle, expectations, and atmosphere at the Winter Sport Institute’s Canada Olympic Park campus. There will be ample opportunity to ask questions concerning “life at the NSS” and any other pertinent aspects applicants would like to discuss. After review of information gathered at STEP 3 by the Admissions Committee, applicants will be advised of whether an invitation to progress to ‘STEP 4: CBE Academic Review’ will be extended. STEP 4: Calgary Board of Education Academic Review. At STEP 4, the CBE reviews the applicant’s academic record and qualifications for admission to the NSS. The CBE does not participate in the sport or athletic assessment of the applicant. STEP 4 occurs only if the previous steps have resulted in the favorable recommendation of the applicant. After completion of this process, the applicant will be advised of whether an offer of provisional acceptance will be extended to the applicant (anticipated notification date: before June 1, 2016). STEP 5: Provisional School Enrollment. Upon receipt of written notification of provisional acceptance, the applicant and his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) will complete and sign the School Enrollment Agreement. This Agreement outlines the overall codes of conduct required of those associated with the NSS, and includes an accompanying document concerning required behavior and responsibilities at the Winter Sport Institute. All applicants who have achieved STEP 5 must also complete and submit a CBE/NSS Release of Student Information form (to be provided with the notice of provisional acceptance), in addition to other required CBE/NSS enrollment forms that will be provided. Please note, you will be issued an invoice via email from WinSport for the NSS program fee. This step must be completed by JUNE 15, 2016 to ensure the applicant’s enrollment in the NSS in September. If financial payment (or settlement of same) is not made by this date or if the School Enrollment Agreement or School Release of Student Information form is not completed and received by the NSS by this date, the applicant’s provisional acceptance to the NSS will be forfeited. 3 2016/2017 STEP 6: Medical Examination.
