It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves — Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some; it is in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. According to an ancient legend, the light created at the very beginning of creation was not the same as the light emitted by the sun, the moon and the stars. The light of the first day was a sort that would have enabled a person to see the world at a glance from one end to the other. Since people were unworthy to enjoy the blessing of such light, God concealed it; but in the world to come it will appear to the pious in all its pristine glory. How wonderful, O God, are the works of Your hands! The heavens declare Your glory, the arch of sky displays Your handiwork. The heavens declare the glory of God.

The roaring breakers of the sea tell of Your awesome might; the beasts of the field and the birds of the air bespeak Your wondrous will. The earth reveals God’s eternal presence.

An hour before the first Shabbat, Adam and Eve were to be expelled from the Garden of Eden for eating of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. But Shabbat, about to enter the world for the first time, interceded. Will You welcome me by bringing death into the world?” she cried to God. And so the Holy One of Blessing relented and allowed Adam and Eve to enjoy the world’s first Shabbat in the Garden of Eden. To thank Shabbat for her understanding and compassion, Adam and Eve wanted to sing her a song, but Shabbat demurred. “No,” she said, “let us instead sing a song of thanks to God.” And so Shabbat composed this song, “It is good to praise Adonai.” – Midrash

I begin with a prayer of gratitude for all that is holy in my life. God needs no words, no English or Hebrew, no semantics and no service. But I need them. Through prayer, I can sense my inner strength, my inner purpose, my inner joy, my capacity to love. As I reach upward in prayer, I sense these qualities in my Creator. To love God is to love each other, to work to make our lives better. To love God is to love the world God created and to work to perfect it. We pray to God as individuals, yet at times something even more powerful can happen when we pray in a congregation. We all know that that can be difficult—the leader goes to fast/too slowly; this group uses too much/too little Hebrew; the melodies are unfamiliar/too familiar; no one here seems serious/everyone is too serious. While there will be time for private prayer tonight, the Bar’chu is a reminder that we have all come here—though for many different reasons—to seek some value in a praying community, with the understand that each of us is giving up something in the hope of receiving something— a sense of participating in the Jewish people; a sense of standing amid the people whose traditions give us words and gestures to ease the way to knowing God; sometimes just a larger chorus, a more varied set of inflections that can cast new light on the words we individually offer, that can amplify our individual voices into a mighty swell. – Richard Levy

37 When I die give what’s left of me away To children and old men that wait to die. And if you need to cry, Cry for your brother walking the street beside you. And when you need me, put your arms around anyone And give them what you need to give to me. I want to leave you something, Something better than words or sounds. Look for me in the people I’ve known or loved, And if you cannot give me away, At least let me live on your eyes and not on your mind. You can love me most By letting hands touch hands, By letting bodies touch bodies, And by letting go of children that need to be free. Love doesn’t die, people do.
