We never take our eyes off each other. In love and in rivalry, we always think of each other.”From the #1 New York Times bestselling author behind the upcoming Starz original series The White Princess, a gripping new Tudor story featuring King Henry VIII’s sisters Mary and Margaret, along with Katherine of Aragon, vividly revealing the pivotal roles the three queens played in Henry VIII’s kingdom. When Katherine of Aragon is brought to the Tudor court as a young bride, the oldest princess, Margaret, takes her measure. With one look, each knows the other for a rival, an ally, a pawn, destined—with Margaret’s younger sister Mary—to a sisterhood unique in all the world. The three sisters will become the queens of England, Scotland, and France.United by family loyalties and affections, the three queens find themselves set against each other. Katherine commands an army against Margaret and kills her husband James IV of Scotland. But Margaret’s boy becomes heir to the Tudor throne when Katherine loses her son. Mary steals the widowed Margaret’s proposed husband, but when Mary is widowed it is her secret marriage for love that is the envy of the others. As they experience betrayals, dangers, loss, and passion, the three sisters find that the only constant in their perilous lives is their special bond, more powerful than any man, even a king. As an avid Philippa Gregory reader, I have read everything she has published. I love the Wideacre trilogy and even find delight in the outlier novels such as The Wise Woman and Fallen Skies. This current novel, however, has none of the magic of Taming of the Queen or the White Queen series. Instead of creating a vivid Scottish world, Gregory has given us a fairly two dimensional heroine whos obsessive desire to best her sisters drives every decision. Margaret Tudor spends most of the novel reciting epic battles and whining. We are not given any of the rich detail of Gregorys previous novels nor do we feel very strongly for Margaret. There is little story telling and lots of listing of events. Margarets world just happens around her and we as the reader are not part of it. She is a petulant woman child and her story is incredibly reminiscent of her granddaughters life. I found myself waiting for the book to be over. Gregory had the chance to recreate the magic she had done with Katherine Parr but fell incredibly flat. I still love Gregory but will not be rereading Three Sisters anytime soon. • A Conversation with Philippa Gregory What First Interested You
A Conversation with Philippa Gregory What first interested you in Margaret Pole? I was aware of Margaret as the daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, as one of the children of the three brothers of York: Edward, George, and Richard. But she really came to my attention when I was writing The White Princess and I understood her intimacy and shared interests with Elizabeth of York, her cousin. How did Margaret’s role on the outskirts of the Tudor court allow you to create a unique insight into the events of Henry VIII’s rise and reign? She is a marvellous character to use as a narrator since she is intimate with Henry from his earliest years, a close friend of his mother, and then the friend and constant companion of his first wife. She sees him as only a member of his family could see him grow and mature, and she is uniquely placed to watch his deterioration. What were some of the challenges of using a lesser-known historical figure as a narrator at the centre of a novel compared to one that has been written about extensively, such as Anne Boleyn or Henry VIII himself? The advantage of a character whose life has not been thoroughly researched is that you avoid strong preconceptions and prejudices from the reader; as a writer of fiction based on the facts you are able to tell the story as you see it—and not be constantly compared to another writer’s version. The disadvantage of course is that there are gaps in the historical record and gaps in the speculation which historians bring to well-worked topics.

Philippa Gregory Philippa Gregory was an established historian and writer when she discovered her interest in the Tudor period and wrote the novel The Other Boleyn Girl which was made into a TV drama, and a major film. Now, six novels later, she is looking at the family that preceded the Tudors: the magnificent Plantaganets, a family of complex rivalries, loves, and hatreds. She lives with her family on a small farm in Yorkshire where she keeps horses, hens and ducks. Visitors to this site, Philippa Gregory.com become addicted to the updates of historical research and the progress of ducklings. Her other great interest is the charity that she founded nearly twenty years ago: Gardens for The Gambia. She has raised funds and paid for almost 200 in the primary schools of this very dry and poor African country, and thousands of school children have been able to learn market gardening in the school gardens watered by the wells. The charity also provides wells for womens’ collective gardens and for The Gambia’s only agricultural college at Njawara. A past student of Sussex University, and a PhD and Alumna of the Year 2009 of Edinburgh University, her love for history and commitment to historical accuracy are the hallmarks of her writing.
