 President

President 2009 has been an extremely successful year for Hockey WA, and moving through my second year as state and local government sporting experience. president has not been without its challenges. The start Kevin’s appointment is in line with Hockey WA’s of the year saw the resignation and relocation of CEO strategic direction and the skills he provides will Linda Hamersley. Linda was Hockey WA’s first CEO to ensure hockey remains at the forefront of sports in oversee both men’s and women’s hockey in Western . Australia. Linda oversaw massive changes to Hockey WA’s governance structure and was responsible for 2009 also saw the resignation of Ceri Writer as a providing the foundation for what is an extremely director from the board of Hockey WA. Ceri’s term successful and well managed organisation. as both WA Women’s Hockey and Hockey WA President will be looked upon as one that facilitated Hockey WA was pleased to find and appoint Kevin Knapp the amalgamation of men’s and women’s hockey in as CEO from January 2009, following an extensive Western Australia, as well as retaining the Hockey search. Kevin is well known to many in the High Performance Program in WA for many community and brings to the role a wealth of hockey, years to come.

On behalf of the board, I would like to thank both Linda and Ceri for their outstanding contribution to hockey in Western Australia and for the personal support and mentoring that they have provided to me over the past six years.

2009 has seen the second phase of changes to our officiating structure. It is pleasing that these changes are starting to make a significant impact in the quality and quantity of umpires at all levels. Particular thanks must go to Pino Monaco and Ian Pitt who have persevered in their determination to bring about change in the way that hockey officiating operates in WA.

An on-going strategic item in 2009 was the review of our elite competition structure. This independent review, commissioned by the board, was released in 2009 and succeeded in creating the expected emotive response from clubs. Out of this emotion have come a number of strong, positive initiatives that will be implemented in 2010 and beyond.

Hockey WA continues to be one of the leading State Sporting Organisations in Australia, and 2009 has seen a further increase in co-operation between us and other state hockey associations. We remain a highly efficient and effective organisation that continues to be looked upon in high regard by many hockey and non-hockey organisations.

A healthy level of reserve funds together with committed government funding to aid future turf replacement has shown that Hockey WA continues to be run in line with good business practice. My thanks go to Chairman of the Audit, Finance and Governance Committee – Phil Nillsen, Finance

 President

Manager – Kim Rodgers and all members of the Committee for their on-going commitment to Hockey WA’s financial management.

Hockey WA’s relationship with Hockey Australia has also improved with a changing of the guard at both board and executive levels. All state associations are now working closely with Hockey Australia to develop and implement changes that benefit hockey at all levels. The first noticeable change will be the new Australian Hockey League structure in 2010 which will see the competition played during the domestic season making it an integral part of the winter hockey season.

Hockey enjoys tremendous support and commitment from many people. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our sponsors, our corporate and program partners and the many volunteers who help make our sport what it is.

It has been a pleasure to be President of Hockey WA. My role would not be possible without the work and support of those around me. Thank you to the Board of Directors for their loyalty, commitment and support. The Board has worked tirelessly and has provided united leadership for our sport.

Hockey WA would not be what it is today if not for an extremely dedicated group of people that run our sport, day in and day out. The dedication and skill to which the staff subscribes is outstanding and I thank each and every one of them.

Finally, I must thank our Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Knapp. Kevin has been a breath of fresh air in his approach to the role, particularly in building relationships with stakeholders at all levels. 2010 will be the final year of Hockey WA’s three year strategic plan, and Kevin will be integral to the formulation and implementation of the next strategic plan taking us to 2014.

Thank you to every one for their support and I look forward to catching up in 2010.

WA State Teams performed well during 2009 with all finishing in the top 4 of their respective National Championships. The highlight was the success of the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks, who won their second consecutive Australian Hockey League title in Tasmania against Queensland who were clearly the favoured team. Victorious coach Paul Gaudoin signed with Hockey Australia as an assistant coach for the men’s national program following Graham Reid, highlighting the strength of coaching depth being developed in WA.

Strong performances at National Championships continued to see WA athletes selected to national squads throughout the year. Fiona Boyce, Ashleigh Nelson and Kate Denning all debuted for the Hockeyroos in 2009 with Graham Begbie, Jonathan Charlesworth, Ross Meadows, Ian Burcher and Brent Dancer getting their first caps with the Kookaburras.

This leaves Barb, Claire and Glenn to focus their attention on event management and facility issues.

2009 was a very busy year for events – we thought that the year after the Olympics might be a little quieter for major events, but that was definitely not the case. Along with our usual underage and senior State Championships, we hosted a four match international men’s series against the Netherlands with games being conducted in Perth, Bunbury and Busselton.

We also hosted the U21 Australian Men’s Championship and two weekends of AHL round matches for both the men and the women. Just as we had settled into the domestic season, we were asked to host the German women’s team for a two test series against the Hockeyroos, in preparation 10 Bar and Canteen

In my report last year I encouraged clubs to develop a culture that would encourage and support umpires at all levels and for junior players to fully participate in club umpiring programs.

I am pleased to say there has been some very encouraging feedback on this front throughout 2009. Hockey needs good umpires at all levels and clubs are encouraged to continue to actively promote and support junior umpiring programs.

The committee is also currently drafting a policy on the consumption of BYO alcohol on licensed club premises. This policy will formally address a long standing problem and impose strong penalties on a minority who continuously place WA hockey clubs in breach of liquor licensing laws.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the 2009 Club Development Committee for their continued hard work. Members include Struan Burges, Andrew Spittle, Julian Peet, Peta Campbell, Peter Churack and our staff liaison officer Melissa Johnson.

2009 has been a very interesting and exciting year for the Club Development Committee and 2010 promises to be another big year. The Committee is always looking for new members, so if you would like to be involved with the Club Development Committee in 2010 please contact Hockey WA.

Each year Hockey WA invites both male and female AIS athletes to be drafted into the AHG League competitions. This process has been in place for more than 25 years. Like any system that has been around that long, the rules have altered and shifted with the times, whilst always trying to maintain the fairness of the competition and the wellbeing of the athlete. The Hockey WA board this year asked the HPCC to review the Hockey WA draft bringing both the men and the women into line, providing a simpler and more equitable draft system. These changes are in their final stages and 2010 should see these implemented.

I would also like to thank my fellow HPCC members Bevan Lawrence, Peter Freer, David Bell and Neil Hawgood for their enthusiasm and commitment during the last 12 months.

Finally, I would like to thank all of our valued officials, technical officials, judges and umpire coaches for their tireless efforts throughout the year. These people often do not receive the acknowledgement they rightly deserve and without them our sport would be non-existent.

In comparison to previous years, the 2009 season has been a great success. With the introduction of the Officiating Reference Panel and numerous development initiatives, it is clear that officiating in Western Australia is moving in the right direction for the future. Like with most amateur sports, officiating is an area where continual improvements are required, there is no simple solution. This being said, Hockey WA feels that with the small steps taken in 2009 and with the continued support of clubs and 16 Country
