OLYMPIC BENEFIT UPDATE

We are now well into this crucial 2015 season of Olympic Qualifying regattas and ISAF World Cup events. It is really exciting to see how well our RTYC members of the RYA Olympic Squad have been doing in the tough months from January to May. We should all be very proud of some top results achieved by our sailors, the proving grounds which punctuate weeks and weeks of arduous “training blocks”.

At this time of year, I would not be complaining if I was sailing every day in Portugal or Mallorca, instead of the cold and windy Solent, where we ordinary mortals find our weekend sport. But seriously, it is physically very demanding, and every day must be planned with objectives for each session on the water, specific goals for every training session in the Here is a quick summary of some outstanding gym. And someone has to do all the administration as results : well: booking flights, booking accommodation at regatta Miami ISAF World Cup Regatta venues, shipping boats all over the world, making sure new equipment and sails get delivered on time – not Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark – 470 Women – much time to relax, not much time to sit down with a drink (non-alcoholic of course ! ). OLYMPICOLYMPIC BENEFIT BENEFIT UPDATE UPDATE

One thing we must all remember, these are not OLYMPIC BENEFIT DINNER: SAVE THE DATE any old training regattas. Some regattas are scoring points towards getting your country a slot in the Rio Olympics. Other events are qualifying sailors for their Class world championships later on in the season, and there is also the RYA’s system for deciding who will go the August Test Event in Rio ( The Pre-Olympics ) where we can only have two entries in each class. With so much at stake, it is easier to understand why the training blocks are so important. Any testing of new equipment and new sailing techniques must be done in training, so that the speed and boat handling are optimised for the big events.

OLYMPIC BENEFIT DINNER

It has become a Royal Thames tradition to hold a fund- raising evening in November, to support our Olympic trial- lists who are in line for selection to the British Olympic team. So far, in every Olympic Games since 2004, we have been able to follow a few RTYC members, who have achieved the honour of representing their country at the Games, in sailing of course !

The high point of this support came in Weymouth, in the London 2012 Olympics, when Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark won their silver medals in the Women’s 470 Class. They narrowly lost out to the New Zealand pair, with whom they were tied on points going into the final double points medal race. We also had Lucy and Katie Macgregor, with Annie Lush, competing in the Women’s Match Racing event, and finishing sixth, after missing out on the semi-final by a whisker.

With this background of achievement, we are holding the Rio Dinner on Thursday 5th November, with high expec- tations. All our Olympic sailors will be present, and they will give us a video presentation in the Britannnia Bar, before our dinner in the Coffee Room. So we will see close-up action of their training programme and get a feel for the high performance boats which are raced at the ultimatelevel of our sport. The 470 girls have just beaten their Kiwi rivals in the ISAF World Cup regatta in Weymouth, so their chances of getting selected for Rio are very high, and we also have three teams competing for selection in the Nacra 17 cat- amaran. We are confident that there will therefore be two RTYC boats competing in Rio, so there is plenty of nail- biting action to look forward to, over the coming months. And it is our intention to cheer them all the way to the Rio Games, in August 2016. Please come to the Rio Dinner on 5th November, and show them how much we support their campaigns and ap- plaud their achievements.

For more information or to book please contact Lucia in the Secretariat at [email protected] or on 020 7201 6267.
