CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Once again Newcastle cricket has much to celebrate on and off the field in season 2018-19 and it is with great pleasure I report on some of the season highlights.

The standout performance was Toronto cricket clubs maiden 1st grade premiership in their 60th anniversary year. The team played consistent cricket all season and were deserved winners Hamilton Wickham in a high quality final at No.1 Sports Ground. Brendan Charlton with 5 for 49 and 30 for Toronto played a match winning hand and was the Ken Clifford medal winner.

Congratulations to the Charlestown club who took out the newly named Robert Holland Club Championship. This was the clubs the second successive club championship, a testimony to the clubs ability both on and off the field.

Player of the Final & Ken Clifford Medal Winner Brendan Charlton with Mrs Clifford

The introduction of the Social and Development League added a new dimension to the NDCA competition structure. Feedback from all participating clubs was extremely positive and the competition filled an identified void between the existing levels of grade cricket and social cricket. Congratulations to Waratah who won the inaugural S&D final.

Newcastle City Council continued its sponsorship of the NDCA T20 competition. Thank you to the City of Newcastle for their support and in particular Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and General Manager Jeremy Bath. NCC Summer Bash 2 was a showpiece for Newcastle cricket with some brilliant games of T20 cricket on display. As well as good attendances at the grounds, the games attracted over 50,000 online viewers. Congratulations to Charlestown who won their first NDCA 1st grade T20 competition.

At representative level we saw the introduction of a Lake Macquarie representative team in the NSW Country Plan B Regional Bash, giving the NDCA two teams in the state wide competition. The Blasters and the Lake Mac Attack now provide increased representative opportunities for Newcastle cricketers. This model will filter down to Newcastle’s under age cricketers next summer.

The Newcastle Steel had a good season in the Kingsgrove Cup winning 3 out of the 4 round games, missing the playoffs on run rate. A home win over Mosman and an away win over Gordon were standout matches. At time of writing the Sydney Cricket Association is reviewing the ongoing participation of regional teams in this NSW Premier competition – an extremely backward and short sighted approach in my opinion.

6 At NSW Country representative level, the Newcastle teams performed solidly without winning any major trophies. The Opens male team, Kookaburra, Bradman and Colts teams all had some promising moments during their carnivals but in the end were not consistent enough to challenge for the finals.

On a national level, it was pleasing to see two former NDCA players selected together in the NSW Sheffield Shield team. This feat has not been achieved since Newcastle born players Mark Cameron and Burt Cockely both represented NSW in 2008.

I would like to thank the media for their continued support of Newcastle cricket – Josh Callinan from the Newcastle Herald, Mitch Hughes and his team from NBN TV, BarTV and ABC Radio. I would also like to thank our major sponsors and supporters – CBA, Club Mex, Newcastle Herald, Kingsgrove Sports, PKF Auditors, Warren Tenant Foundation, and Kookaburra Sports. I would also like to thank our major partners for their support – Cricket NSW, NSW Country Cricket, Newcastle City Council and Lake Macquarie City Council.

To conclude, I would like to thank the many volunteers who give freely of their time to support the NDCA and its member clubs and my fellow NDCA committee members for their support and efforts during the summer. Looking forward to an equally successful season 2019-20

Paul H. Marjoribanks Chairman – NDCA

7 SECRETARY’S REPORT

The Committee of Management of the Newcastle District Cricket Association has much pleasure in presenting the Annual Report covering the 2018/2019 season.

The Management Committee appointed the following persons as Chairman of the standing committees for season 2018/2019:

Appeals Committee Terry Morgan Fixtures and Permits Alan Nichols Judiciary Committee Michael McIntyre OAM Representative Selection Greg Arms Umpire Appointments Tim Caimakamis

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) in July 2018 saw K. M. (Michael) Hill inducted and elected as a Life membership of the association. This was warmly received by those in attendance. Michael, himself was unable to attend this evening, however at the season launch in September he was presented with his NDCA life membership badge.

8 The NDCA website (www.ndca.asn.au) again proved a major source for cricket followers of the local competition with well over 70,000 visits on all various pages of the site throughout the season.

The Newcastle District Cricket Umpires Association (NDCUA) continued to appoint as many umpires as possible to Saturday Grade fixtures and the Sunday competitions. An offseason campaign again will hopefully see increased persons on field for the coming season Cricket New South Wales (CNSW) and Country Cricket New South Wales (CCNSW) are also thanked for their support of Newcastle cricket. Newcastle City Council (NCC) and Lake Macquarie City Council (LMCC) are also thanked for providing many grounds that are available to allow competitions to go ahead as smoothly as possible throughout the season.

The Committee discussed many issues during the season including the rules of competition, ground issues, T20 Sundays, registration of players, proposed name changes, one (1) day washouts, results into my cricket on a timely basis each week, training for delegates on My cricket and the overall representative program that can effect NDCA grade and weekend competitions. Many hours of debate occurs within committee each month as we continue to deal with issues effecting the competition, enquiries rulings, ground allocations and maintenance of ovals and grounds. Attendance by committee members at each meeting has been excellent with meeting generally being held on a monthly basis or as needs determine

The Grade Administrator Alan Nichols and his Fixtures and Permits Committee of John Bailey, Graeme Bruce and Tim Caimakamis is certainly the busiest committee within the association dealing with grounds, substitutes each round, interruptions of local rules and protests from clubs where a dispute occurs on a particular day.

Newcastle City Council (NCC) T20 Big Bash has commenced and we are appreciative of the council for its support of this concept and monies injected into it. Prize monies awarded to teams for this competition is well received by participating clubs and a continuation of this relationship with council is certainly one we will continue to foster.

The second Grade Royce McCormack Cup continued this season with Wallsend being the winning team. It is an honour to have a competition named after oneself.

My personal thanks are extended to all members of respective clubs and associations, my committee of management colleagues and sub sub-committees members who give up their time freely to assist in the running of the various competitions held.

Grade/Association Secretaries are also thanked for giving up their time voluntarily to assist their respective clubs and the NDCA as a whole.

Thanks also are expressed to the Umpires association and the appointments committee for supplying as many umpires as possible on field especially on Saturday grade days where number in particular to fill lower grades are so important.

R. D. (Royce) McCormack – Secretary NDCA.

11 NEWCASTLE CRICKET ZONE REPORT

[Note: a detailed report will be included in the Newcastle Zone Annual Report]

Cricket NSW is the peak state sporting organisation responsible for the governance, development, promotion and administration of cricket throughout New South Wales.

The vision for Cricket NSW is To Ignite Australia’s Favourite Sport in Australia’s Biggest State. To achieve this vision, Cricket NSW has a number of short-term targets and long-term aspirations.

In the longer term, Cricket NSW aspires to be number 1 in the country for production of Australian players, attendance, fan passion, team success, participation and investment in the game.

The strategy for Cricket NSW has five pillars that are critical to achieve the vision to Ignite Australia’s Favourite Sport in Australia’s Biggest State; 1. Grow cricket’s NSW fan base significantly especially via the BBL 2. Be the No.1 producer of talent in Australian Cricket 3. Increase participation substantially and inspire the next generations of NSW players, fans and volunteers 4. Energise NSW Cricket and be a positive force in Australian cricket at a crucial time of change

With this in mind the role of the Zone is to assist CNSW achieve its goals by supplying the necessary operational functions to support the high performance actions involved in representative cricket for all players of all ages, including Girls, Women, Boys and Men, competing in various State Carnivals and competitions, which contribute to the Hogg Silver Shield awarded to the best performing zone in NSW Country Cricket, points are awarded for the place each team finishes in their respective carnivals.

The results of last season were not good as shown in the table below:

ZONE CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE 2018-19 Zone Colts Country Bradman Kooka Women's Women's Total Champs burra U15s U18s Central Coast 10 10 10 10 1 0 41 ACT Southern Districts 2 7 1 5 10 0 25 Riverina 5 1 7 4 6 0 23 Central Northern 4 2 5 3 7 0 21 Newcastle 74 225 020 Western 6 5 6 1 2 0 20 Nth Coastal 3 3 4 7 3 0 20 Greater Illawarra 1 6 3 6 4 0 20

12 In the representative ranks, Price led title holders Newcastle at the NSW Country Championships for the first time. Chad, Jed Dickson and Josh Geary all debuted in the Bush Blues squad. The Newcastle Blasters were unable to retain their T20 Regional Bash crown and the district's second team, Lake Mac Attack, was born. I won’t go into individual team performances but it is sufficient to say that our let us down at critical stages and that our younger teams showed that little turf game time did not assist us, on the positive side our high performance team are working to improve this in the near future.

The final piece of the Zone puzzle is our participation in the Plan B Big Bash (a state-wide T20 competition) our zone being split for the first time last season by the introduction of the Lake Mac Attack which meant our playing strength was weaken in the Blasters but giving us the added benefit of allowing more players to show off their considerable talents.

Next season this concept will be extended to include Women, U13, 14 & 15 year old boys, I look forward to this new and exciting concept assisting the coaching staff develop our younger player’s skills.

Merewether captain Simon Moore was "humbled" when honoured for his previous services and performances for the Bush Blues, becoming the fourth player inducted into the Australian Country Championships hall of fame.

13 REPRESENTATIVE REPORT FOR 2018-2019

(Courtesy of David Redden) Plan B Regional Bash T20

The Plan B Regional Bash saw the addition of the Lake Mac Attack into the Statewide T20 Competition.

Wet weather in Newcastle played havoc with the schedule. When play eventually got underway: Lake Mac 4-90 defeated the Hunter Hitmen 8-86 in Game 1 at Harker Oval. Leggies Daniel Chillingworth (3-11) and Aaron Bills (2-17) starred with the ball whilst Nick Watkins (46) and Ryan Fenning (28*) saw the Attack win comfortably.

The Newcastle Blasters made 140 against the Central Coast Rush. Nathan Hudson made 33 and Nathan Price 40 for the 2017 Champions. The Central Coast Rush won on the last ball of the day, 6 down. Jonty Durrheim (2-26) and Jacob Montgomery (2-10) were the pick of the bowlers. On Oct 21 at Waratah Oval, the Attack and Blasters played their first ever local derby. The Blasters crawled to 8-112 off their allotted 20 overs, with very important late contributions from Newcastle Colts players Josh Claridge (27) and Toby Gray (26*) rescuing the Blasters from 7-58.

In reply, the Attack could only muster 104, with Nick Watkins playing superb lone hand of 69 before he was run out by Zac McGuigan. Wests teammates Brad Aldous (4-8) and Peter Lojszczyk (3-23) bowled beautifully for the Blasters, ably supported by veteran Nick Foster (2- 11).

The Central Coast Rush won the Pool and went on to win the PBRB.

Sydney T20 (Kingsgrove Cup)

The Newcastle Steel again played extremely well in the Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup, winning three out of four games but just missing out on the finals.

In Game 1, Newcastle 2-135 defeated Greater Illawarra 8-134 at North Dalton Park in Towradgi. Nathan Price had a huge day, taking 4-16 then making 75 in the successful run chase.

In Game 2, Newcastle 4-181 defeated Mosman 166 in a high-scoring game on a Waratah Oval belter. Nathan Hudson made 79* and Jed Dickson 34, then Peter Lojszczyk (3-38) and Dylan Robertson (3-37) went through Mosman in a great game of cricket.

In Game 3, part of the double-header at Waratah, Newcastle ran into a rampant Sydney CC. Newcastle were dismissed for 69, which Sydney knocked off in 6.4 overs. Our last game saw us visit Chatswood Oval to play Gordon. Gordon made 8-141, with Toby Gray & Brad Aldous both taking 3 . Newcastle passed their target 6 down, with Nathan Price (42) and Nathan Hudson (32) again amongst the runs.

Country Championships Newcastle headed to Berry & Nowra for a rare venture into the Southern Pool. Unfortunately, two tough days with the bat on Saturday & Sunday saw us miss the Country Final.

14 Day 1 saw us play Riverina. A superb 180-run stand between Jed Dickson (98) and Adrian Chad (88) saw Newcastle finish with 253 off 50 overs. Riverina made only 101 in reply, with spinners Nick Foster (3-9) and Toby Gray (2-16) taking advantage of a helpful Berry Sports Complex deck.

Day 2 saw Newcastle play hosts Greater Illawarra in Nowra. Adrian Chad made 60, and an important late 36* from Josh Geary saw Newcastle make 186 all out.Greater Illawarra batted very sensibly and made their target in the 49th over. Brad Aldous took 2-47. Day 3 saw Newcastle play ACT/Southern Districts. An excellent performance with the ball restricted ACT/SD to 130. Josh Geary took 3-17 and bowled himself into his first Country NSW Baggy Blue. In reply on an interesting Berry pitch, Newcastle could only muster 112. Nathan Price made 30 and Jonty Durrheim was the last man out for 23.

Colts The Newcastle Colts won 4 out of 5 games at the Colts Carnival played at a sweltering Narrabri, but just lost to Central Coast on the last, rain-affected day of the carnival to finish second. Day 1: Newcastle made 9-279 vs North Coast (Ahmed Badat 60, Josh Claridge 59, Michael Richardson 69). In reply, North Coastal made 178, with debutant Aidan Cahill cleaning up the tail to finish with 4-24.

Day 2: Newcastle made an ordinary 193 against Central Northern, with Ahmed Badat making 79 and Glenn Winsor 44. Lewis Hextell (4-15) and Toby Gray (4-20) helped dismissed Central Northern for just 62, securing Double Bonus Points.

Day 3: Game 1: Newcastle and Western both made 158 in a thrilling T20 game, which went to a Super Over. Edan Brichta took 3-38 and Josh Claridge made 54. In the Super Over, Newcastle restricted Western to 6 runs, which Glenn Windsor knocked off in two balls for a heart-stopping victory.

Day 3: Game 2: Newcastle dismissed ACTSD for just 79. Belmont teammates Luke Muddle (3-15) and Toby Gray (3-11) bowled exceptionally well. Josh Claridge made 28* as Newcastle passed their target in the 15th over.

Day 4: In a rain-affected 30 overs side clash, Central Coast made 173. Four players (Messrs Hextell, Gray, Anderson and Brichta) all took two wickets. In reply, despite a gallant 66 from Mitchell Lole, Newcastle was dismissed for 164 in 29 overs.

1ST GRADE YEAR IN REVIEW TORONTO TRIUMPH FOR HISTORIC TITLE It's Toronto, it's Dutchy, it's history ... it's the vibe. The Kookaburras not only staged a remarkable comeback on the final day of the season, but they did so to claim the club's maiden first grade premiership. Adding to the significance of the moment was celebrating the club's 60th anniversary, just 18 months since Southern Lakes stalwart and former Test spinner Robert "Dutchy" Holland passed away. Toronto captain Adrian Chad proudly held aloft the Newcastle District Cricket Association trophy at No.1 Sportsground on a picturesque Sunday afternoon and eventually took the silverware to a new home at J. R. Ron Hill Oval. But only after man-of-the-match Brendon Charlton followed up his figures of 5-49 with 30 not out batting at No.10, combining with Griffin Lea (38 not out) for an unbeaten ninth partnership of 60 runs. This guided Toronto past the 164 set by minor premiers Hamilton-Wickham after losing 6-25 and being 8-108 during the top-two showdown. Hamwicks didn't walk away from 2018-19 empty handed, having collected the Tom Locker Cup crown earlier in the campaign with a four-wicket win over University. Club champions Charlestown clinched their first T20 Summer Bash prize, beating HamWicks and Wests on finals day with Magpies opener Daniel Arms posting unbeaten totals of 63 and 65. A six sealed the decider. Individually, Wallsend skipper Nathan Price was outstanding and earned the prestigious player of the year award. The all-rounder scored four centuries in an overall aggregate of 815, averaging 81.5, and also took 11 wickets. Other points of note: * Belmont leg-spinner Toby Gray helped ACT-NSW Country win both the national under- 17 and under-19 titles. * Wallsend duo Nathan Price and Jacob Montgomery combined to score 41 runs off one over in a first grade match. * Stockton and Northern Districts brothers, left-arm seamer Daniel and off-spinner Nick Foster, took all 10 wickets between them in one innings. HamWicksks veteran Sam Webber notched up both the 6000 run and 600 wicket milestones in first grade (according to club records). * Cardiff-Boolaroo played their maiden game at the new Pasterfield Sports Complex while Merewether farewelled their traditional "green room" facilities at Townson Oval. *Medowie-based Paul Wilson, a former Australian quick who played for Southern Lakes (Toronto), was appointed to umpire at the one-day World Cup in England. Further afield, Jason Sangha became Newcastle's latest first-class player after making his Sheffield Shield debut for NSW. The 19-year-old scored a century in his third match. He also appeared for Big Bash T20 franchise Sydney Thunder as well as representing Australia A and the Prime Minister's XI. Yours in cricket, Josh Callinan Newcastle Herald

TOM LOCKER CUP (1-DAY) FINAL (Report by Josh Cullinan courtesy of the Newcastle Herald)

Matt Webber can’t remember how many Tom Locker Cup finals he has claimed with Hamilton- Wickham but Sunday’s victory at No.1 Sportsground was made a little extra satisfying as captain.

The long-serving Hamwicks all-rounder was leading his troops in the Newcastle District Cricket Association one-day decider for the first time and they responded with a four-wicket win over University. “It’s my first one as skipper and it is nice,” Webber said. “It’s a bit more stressful and I don’t enjoy myself quite as much in the field, but we still have a fun time out there.”

Hamwicks have now collected six Tom Locker Cup crowns within the last two decades, the second most of any club, but this was the Pumas first since 2014-15.

Off-spinner Kain Anderson, who also plays under 21s for Hamwicks, picked up 3-31 as University were dismissed for 161 in the 40th and last over. Man-of-the-match Dave Stevenson opened the batting and made 43 runs from 54 balls in setting up the ultimately successful run chase, which finished six down with 2.4 overs to spare.

“He [Stevenson] is a very solid player for us, especially in finals,” Webber said. “He likes playing at No.1, he gets in behind the ball and doesn’t take a backward step. He’s one of my favourite players in the team. ”Webber was also full of praise for Anderson. “He [Anderson] is a very good young player,” Webber said. “I thought he bowled well and has bowled well for us all year. He’s got a big future young Kain.”

University skipper Andrew Harriott said a few dropped chances and a relatively small total proved costly. “Runs on the board in finals helps, but defending a low total like that you’ve definitely got to take all of your chances,” Harriott said.

“At the end of the day we were 20 to 30 runs short of what we would have liked. We just lost too many wickets early, but they bowled pretty exceptional as well.”

Harriott (32) and James Rushford (40) were the mainstays of the Uni innings before cameos from Luke Bird (20) and Michael Radnidge (20 not out). Bird (3-24) was the best of the bowlers and gave his side half a chance with two wickets in quick succession to have HamWicks 6-134 inside the last 10 overs. Ben Balcomb made 35 for HamWicks while earlier Tom Dwyer (2-18) and Mitch Casey (2-24) chipped in with two wickets apiece.

This season's T20 competition, the NCC Summer Bash was held in January culminating with the final on February 17th. 12 independent teams, backed by each of the 12 NDCA clubs entered into the competition. Divided in to Pools, each team played 5 group matches with the top 2 teams of each group advancing to the semi-finals. Each club played 3 matches midweek during twilight at National Park Sportsground #1 in the City with the other 2 matches played on the same day in a “gala day tripple header” Sunday. In Pool A, with the Pumas losing their last match of the series, they just pipped the Magpies to first place with a slightly better quotient though both teams advanced to the semis where the faced the top 2 teams from Pool B. This group was topped by the dominant and undefeated Rosellas (best quotient of all teams in the competition) whilst the Whips from Belmont pipped the unfancied but resilient Sea Gulls on quotient to make the semis.

50 ROYCE MCCORMACK CUP - 2ND GRADE 1-DAY COMPETITION

The second iteration of the RM Cup Final was contested by Wallsend & Cardiff-Boolaroo as both teams topped their respective tables. Though the competition was rain affected with 2 rounds being washed out, in Pool A Wallsend topped the group by 1 (bonus) point over University, whilst in Pool B, CBDCC pipped Belmont with a better coefficient after finishing with the same points.

In the Final played at Wallsend's George Farley Oval, after winning the toss, Wallsend skipper Joe Clarke decided to bat first on his home pitch. In trouble early at 2/11, then 3/34 it didn't seem like a great idea but then a brilliant 94 run partnership between Ben Herring (114) and Gary Geise (37) got things back on track. A handy 24 run dig for the last wicket got them through to 8/219 off their 40 overs. Hayden Clancy 3/33 was best for Cardiff-Boolaroo.

In reply, Cardiff-Boolaroo started steadily losing the first wicket at 1/33. After a couple of mini collapses the CB's were on the ropes though. At one stage losing 4/8, they weren't able to recover and were bowled out for 134 in the 35th over. Ben Herring celebrates his century (114)

53 SECOND GRADE

This year's final was played at Wallsend's George Farley Oval and contested between Premiers Wallsend and fittingly 2nd placed Merewether with the two teams recording the best coefficient stats.

With a deluge of rain the night before the final, it was doubtful whether there would be any play at all, but with a whole lot of work from ground staff and players alike (including an extra super- sopper brought in by Merewether), the umpires were happy to get things underway.

Wallsend won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat. Wallsend struck early, capturing their first scalp in the second over with the score on zero, however Merewether dug in grafting their next 43 runs. That was until a collapse of 5/10 from Merewether. After rearguard batting from Cummings and Young (who batted for 142 mins for his 17 runs), once the dust had settled Wallsend had bowled Merewether out for just 99. Veteran Gary Geise picked up 6/42 in 23.4 overs and starred for the home team. Young gun Ethan Jekot provided good support with 3/10 in 11 overs. Best with the bat for Merewether was captain Scott Montgomery (26).

Wallsend had to bat 15 overs to end day one and lost 2/12. They lost their first early on day 2 and at 3/34 the game was in the balance. Enter Gary Geise (81). He and Jamie Carroll (29) steadied the ship and steered the home side past the first innings target after only 22 overs. Plenty of overs remained in the day though, and although Merewether fought hard, they resigned to the fact that Wallsend positioned themselves into an unbeatable positioned, thus stumps were pulled with Wallsend 7/184. Best bowling for Merewether was Harry Colbert with 3/47. Gary Geise with his 6/42 and 81 runs an easy choice for player of the match.

Top 4 qualified for Semis with 1st vs 4th & 2nd vs 3rd

Congratulations to Charlestown for winning the Premeirship and finishing with the best coefficient of all teams. The 3rd grade season was tight and competitive with semi final qualification going down to the wire, with 7 clubs in the hunt going into the final round. By the midway point at christmas, the top 6 teams were vying for the 4 semi final spots led by University and Toronto. Unfortunately for these two clubs, lean results after Christmas meant that they ultimately missed out. To complicate matters, rain affected the last round whereby only one match was completed. Had Wallsend won this match, they could of scraped into 4th spot from 7th as all the other matches were abandoned. This meant the status quo remained & worked against teams needing to win that final match. In the first Semi-final, City won the toss and batted, however after a steady start they collapsed to be all out for 64 in 47 overs, with Brock Crane ripping through the top order taking 3/7 off 9 overs then David Moore cleaning up the tail taking 4/5 from 7 overs. Charlestown reached the 1st innings target relatively easily to reach the Final. In the second Semi-final, the match was played at the neutral Harker Oval were poor communication between Captains as well as ground staff, led to controversy as covers were not removed on the morning of day, which was compounded by a leak in the cover affecting the pitch and delaying play. Merewether had won the toss and batted first amassing 172 with R.Forbes top scoring with 55. In reply, Waratah-Mayfield lost 2 early wickets, then steadied the ship, however a procession of wickets destroyed and chance they had and were ultimately bowled out for 100. In the Final played at Kahibah Oval, Charlestown won the toss and sent Merewether into bat. Very good bowling by the Magpies, led by Brock Crane's 4/22, forced a procession of wickets with the Lions unable to form a partnership and were bowled out for 64 in 35 overs. In reply Charlestown easily reached the target losing only 1 wicket in the process.

DENIS BROAD OAM CUP The “DB Cup” was designed for lower grade players to play in a competition that utilise the main district ovals that lower graders would normally not play on. Naturally this competition has remained popular in club land.

This year's Champions were Waratah-Mayfield DCC who won their first trophy in 13 years. Led by their captain Jack Dundas, their win was the culmination of a two year plan. The club decided to only select players who were genuinely interested in “having a go”, playing good cricket and winning. A telling stat was that they were able to go through the entire tournament only using 14 players and have lost only one DB game in 2 years. For Waratah-Mayfield, their MVP was Liam Wilson. Liam was tasked with opening the bowling in most matches as a spinner and proved his weight in gold with the bat scoring 200 + runs for the tournament including a massive 70 against Cardiff in round one, as well as his efforts with the bat in the final and his fielding prowess. The final was a tight low scoring match which ultimately hinged on the performance of the wile old fox from Toronto in Ashely Weekes (coincidently, he was also former 1st grade captain with Waratah-Mayfield). As the stats below show, Ashley dominated the competition with both bat & ball taking 13 wickets & scoring 172 runs. In this final he was unplayable with the ball taking 3 for 7 and restricting WMDCC to their lowest score when batting first. However, even though Toronto started well, Ashley was unable to provide another match winning innings with the bat that Toronto desperately needed. With good tight bowling and the regular loss of wickets, Toronto ultimately fell 9 runs short in their allotted 20 overs. The MoM of the final was Waratah's Simon Massey scoring 25* valuable runs at the end of the innings and taking 2 valuable top order wickets.
