Cedarville University is a Baptist institution of arts and sciences of 3,000 students. The school is located on a 400-acre campus at the north edge of the village of Cedarville, Ohio, a quiet town with a population of approximate ly 3,000. The village and its sur rounding area have long main tained a reputation for providiny w:::: ~M a wholesome environment for learning. Though located in a rural community, Cedarville is conveniently sit uated in the center of a triangle formed by Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati, which allows easy access to three of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the nation. Founded in 1887 by the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Cedarville College was established by individuals who had a vital interest in the spiritual welfare of young people. In 1953, the operation of the College was transferred to the trustees of Baptist Bible Institute of Cleveland with the goal of enlarging the lnstitute's ministry. The name Cedarville College was retained , and the school continues to perpetuate the orig inal purpose of its founders . The school credo, " .. .for the Word of God and testimony of Jesus Christ," reflects this commitment. The institu tion became known as Cedarville University in 2000. Since its founding, Cedarville has coupled a balanced liberal arts program with a conservative theological position in regard to doctrine and patterns of conduct. All classes are taught by dedicated Christian professors who integrate the knowledge of their respective fields with biblical perspectives. In keeping with the liberal arts concept, the curriculum centers on a basic program of general studies, including biblical education, commu nications, humanities, physical education, science and mathematics, and social science. Students choose a major field of concentrated study related to their abilities, interests, and career goals. The University offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs of study. The University recognizes that students must live and work in a soci ety where computers and computer networks are an essential part of everyday life. To equip students to function effectively in this environ ment, Cedarville launched CedarNet, the award-winning campus-wide computer information network. CedarNet, which allows access to the Internet, the world-wide web, and OhioLINK, links computers in every dorm room and office on campus. The University is the current recipi ent of the CAUSE Award in the category of campuses with operating budgets of under $100 million. This award recognizes the nation's most outstanding use of campus technology. Also, Cedarville has been iden tified as one of the nation's "100 Most-Wired Campuses" by Yahoo! Internet Life magazine. Cedarville views individual ministry involvement to be a vital and nec essary part of each student's education and personal growth. The Christian Ministries Division provides training and assistance to the hundreds of students who volunteer for any of the more than 150 dif ferent ministries each semester. Cedarville attracts students from 47 states and nearly 65 percent of the student body comes from out of state, including more than 30 inter national students. Residence hall living is considered an integral part of the education al process with approximately 75 percent of the student body residing on campus in University housing.

He started a rebuilding process for the Quakers from a 3-31 record to 12 wins in each of his last two seasons. "I'm really excited to be at Cedarville," says Hughes. "I've always wanted to be at a Christian institution. Our baseball facility is just one example of a new commitment to the program and I feel that I'm here at a good lime." Prior to coaching at Wilmington, Hughes earned his master's degree at Eastern Kentucky University where he was a graduate assistant from 1994 through 1996 under highly-respected head coach Jim Ward. The project, which features a picnic pavilion and concession stand, was completed under the design and leadership of athletic direc tor Pete Reese. 8 2003 Season Outlook

Head Coach Greg Hughes begins his fourth season at the helm of the Yellow Jacket baseball program with his most talented ros ter yet. After winning 15 games last spring, Hughes is confident that this year's squad has the necessary skills to be competitive and add a few more games into the victory column. "I like this team," noted Hughes. "This is a group of hard-working individuals with great work ethic. The chemistry amongst the team is excellent. "We have set our goals for the upcoming season," added Hughes, "and they include reducing the team , closing the walk-to- ratio, plus winning the 'freebie war', which means looking for more , stolen bases, by pitches, and taking advantage of opponent errors." The nucleus of the squad will be a junior class of nine players who have been together for the past two seasons. Josh Smith, a junior lefthander and Jon Oren, a junior infielder, will be captains of the 2003 squad and seek to provide quality leadership. Smith made 11 appearances last spring while recording 50 innings of work. Oren appeared in 43 games with 40 starts and a .216 batting average. The strength of the 2003 Yellow Jackets will be the pitching staff. T.J. Couch, a junior righthander, will be looked to for quality innings not only as a starter but coming out of the bullpen as the closer. Couch made a team-leading 20 appearances last spring with 31 . He led the staff with 7 saves and 38 and is arguably the best closer in the AMC. Other returnees that Hughes will send to the mound include sophomore Daniel Giddings, junior Jacob Richardson and senior John Myers, as well as Josh Smith. Also adding depth to the pitching staff will be fresh men lefthanders Matt Bonin, Andrew Noble and Brian Diercks. Jameson Adams returns for his third and final season with the Yellow Jackets. The 6-4 senior first baseman led the team with a .338 batting average last season. He added 2 doubles, a home run and 13 RBIs to the offensive attack. Junior outfielder Barry Chamberlin will add depth when he hits the diamond after another sea son of action on the basketball court. Another junior, Forest Greetham, led the Yellow Jackets in stolen bases while hitting .314 and will anchor the defense from his centerfield position. Jeff Lowe, a sophomore catch er/DH, returns after posting some impressive numbers in his rookie season. Lowe batted .310 last spring and led the team with 36 hits ,.__F_orest_ __ G_ree __ th_a_m _ __, and 13 doubles. The 2003 schedule features fifteen home dates in addition to hosting the NCCAA Midwest Regional in May. The American Mideast Conference South Division schedule will slate home and away doubleheaders with Ohio Dominican, Shawnee State, Rio Grande, Tiffin and Urbana. The Jackets will also face NCAA Division I Morehead State as well as other non-conference games with Bluffton, Earlham, Georgetown, Mt. Vernon Nazarene, Taylor and Wittenberg. 9 Player Profiles

31 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics IJ~

Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athlet ics programs. Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped forward to address the important issues of the day -- be it racial integration in the '40s and '50s or establishing the first women's championship program in 1980. The NAIA has not been afraid to enact changes while others have watched and waited. In the past decade, presidents of the NAIA colleges and universities have assumed a position of responsible leadership. The NAIA's Council of Presidents. the organization's primary governing body, is comprised of 32 college and unver sity presidents from all regions of the United States. With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen academic eligibility requirements in the mid-'80s. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade point average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis. The All-America Scholar-Athlete program, a long standing NAIA tradition, recognizes junior and senior student-athletes with a min imum cumulative 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Since 1937, the NAIA has administered athletics programs and championships in proper balance with the overall collegiate educational experience. Serving higher education in this manner is a responsibility the NAIA does not take lightly. It is a relationship built on confidence and trust -- a relationship strengthened year after year. National Christian College Athletic Association J

The NCCAA, with national headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina, is a miracle organization. In just a few years an idea has become a reality pro viding Christian student-athletes in Christian colleges both an opportunity for fellowship and competition on the national level. The NCCAA game plan is to produce true winners; a game plan that wi ll carry an individual through his or her entire life. The game plan is devised to draw out the student-athlete's greatest potential -- body, mind, and spirit This game plan is catching on virtually all over the United States. Since its first tournament in 1968, the NCCAA has grown to encompass more than 100 Christian colleges nationwide, both liberal arts and Bible colleges in nature. The participating schools are dedicated not only to the best athlet ic competition possible, but also to exemplify Jesus Christ in everything.

The NCCAA believes:

That athletics are a means to an end, not an end in themselves. That the process is as important as the performance. That the person (student-athlete) is more important than the program.

NCCAA. It is an organization bringing Christian colleges together not just for athletic competition. More importantly, it is an organization bringing col leges together who have common goals and perspectives in Christian high er education.
