Sandown Bay Holiday Centre is situated on a site which was originally a fort, built during the Napoleonic Wars to protect Sandown, and the English Channel.

The cliffs and shore border the grounds with stunning views of the English Channel on one side, and the green rolling downs of Culver and Bembridge on the other.

Sandown Bay is an ideal location from which to explore the Island whether you travel by car, train, bus, cycle or walk. Within Sandown and you will find shops, leisure centre with indoor swimming pool, other leisure facilities and everything you would expect to find in a traditional seaside town and, as an added bonus, Sandown has one of the highest sunshine records in .

We own 3 chalets on Sandown Bay Holiday Centre, and Ocean Decks and Wight Waves are available to holiday makers with the 3rd for our own personal use. We hope you enjoy staying on this peaceful site as much as we and our family and friends do.

Key Safe

You will have found the key in the key safe outside when you arrived. To avoid any chance of loss we respectfully ask that you do not take the door key off site. Please lock it back in the key safe whenever you go out. To do this just open the key safe with the code that you used when you arrived, place the key in the safe, shut the door and spin the 4 number dials to lock it.

All of the equipment is serviced, inspected and maintained regularly to ensure that it is all working effectively.

Fire extinguisher and Fire blanket are located at the entrance into the kitchen area. Although we hope you will never need to use either, please familiarise yourself with the instructions just in case they are needed.

Using & Saving Electricity

Electricity is provided via a meter that takes £1 coins. The meter can be found in the right hand kitchen wall cupboard nearest the window.

All the heaters have controls so that you can decide how much electricity you want to use.

Although our guests pay for their own usage of electricity in the chalets we like to help by providing lights and equipment that is as economical to use as is possible. We also encourage our guests to turn off things they are not using to help save a few pennies here and there, this will mount up in the winter months when heaters are being used.

Most lights have now been replaced by low energy light bulbs within our chalets.

Waste & Recycling

Every little helps when it comes to recycling, and the site management provide rubbish bins and some recycling bins located around the site so we ask that you separate your rubbish: Glass – the small wheelie bin Cardboard – the large bin marked ‘cardboard’ All other waste must be bagged before disposing of it in the general refuse bin. Bins are located around the site.

Site Facilities

Due to the site being set in an area of outstanding natural beauty this site does not have any facilities other than plenty of grass areas, and ample free parking, and its popularity is due to it being a peaceful oasis to relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. However all the facilities you would expect are available locally and details of these are listed separately in this folder.

Customer Care

As owners of the chalet pride ourselves on the quality and standards we provide to our guests.

Whilst you are enjoying your holiday at Sandown Bay Holiday Centre we want you to feel cared for and supported. In order to achieve this we have a person on site who provides customer care for our guests when we are absent. However, in the first instance we would ask you to contact us on mobile no: 07498 355202.

Please be mindful that if it is ‘out of hours’ and is not urgent, we would appreciate you contacting us during the hours of 8am – 6pm, but if urgent please contact us any time on the same phone number. If it is between the hours of 11pm – 8am, please leave a voicemail message which we will respond to as soon as possible the next working day.

Please let us know immediately if there is anything we can do to help you have the best visit.

Health & Safety

To look after yourselves, we would ask you to kindly read and adhere to the following:

The chalets can get damp very quickly, especially when the shower/bath is used. To prevent damp from damaging the chalet we ask that you do not fully close the windows whilst you are in the chalet. Just shut them on the security lock so that air continues to flow. If you do have a shower or bath, please open the bathroom window as soon as you are finished in order to let the condensation out. If the weather permits, please open windows and doors as much as possible.

Trip Hazards

Please be aware that there is a trip hazard at the front door so please be careful when stepping in or out of the chalet.

Slippery Floors

Laminate floors can become slippery if wet, so we recommend you try to avoid walking too much moisture in from outside or from out of the bathroom, and clean up any spills promptly so that accidents can be avoided. There is a mat inside the front door which may be slippery, so please be careful stepping in and out of the front door.

Bathroom Hazards

Hot Water

The hot water can get very hot so please be careful when using the hot taps, especially when children are using it.

Shower and bath

There are switches on the kitchen wall for instantaneous hot water and for the shower, these are clearly labeled. Due to the nature of the water heating system you are only able to have enough hot water for a VERY shallow bath.

Please keep them switched off when they are not needed.

Dogs

This applies to our chalets where dogs are allowed. There are strict rules relating to all dogs at Sandown Bay Holiday Centre.

Please do not allow your dogs onto the beds as it can be very hard to remove the hairs from the bed linen.

Dogs should be kept on leads at all times everywhere except inside the chalets.

Please clear up after your dogs, and we have provided some poo bags for this purpose which you will find in your chalet should you need some when you first arrive. Dogs cannot be secured outside the chalets via a stake in the ground, their lead must be held by a person. Dogs should never be left unattended in the chalets. Please note also that in the sunny weather some parts of the chalet can get very hot indeed, so your dog may need to be moved to a cooler spot at these times.

We have also provided 2 dog bowls as part of the chalet equipment.

The nearest all-year -round dog beach is the beach closest to Sandown Bay Holiday Centre, which is beach to the left of the slipway in front of the yachting club premises. The rest of the dog beaches are dotted along Sandown Bay all the way to Shanklin and there is signage clearly marking which these are. Dogs are allowed on all beaches from early Autumn to Spring, and the dates are clearly stated on signs.

Chalet Equipment

There is equipment for up to 6 people. There is also a full set of plastic cutlery and utensils/crockery suitable for a young child.

Bed linen The beds in both bedrooms are made up ready for you on arrival. We would ask you to strip any beds you have used before leaving as this will greatly help us to prepare the chalet for our next guests.

Cleaning You will find a broom, mop & bucket and a dustpan & brush as well as a toilet brush and some basic cleaning equipment, and we would be grateful if you could leave the chalet clean as it helps us get it ready in time for the next guests.

Heating All the rooms have electric heaters in them which can be switched on if you are chilly. They are all thermostatically controlled but just be careful not to cover them as this causes them to overheat and is a serious potential safety hazard.

Clothes drying Should you wish to dry clothes there is an airer as well as pegs in the chalet that can be placed on the grass outside your chalet, or use the rotary clothes line to the rear of the chalet.

Local Towns & Villages

Sandown

Superbly situated beside the sparkling waters of Sandown Bay, the twin resorts of Sandown and Shanklin have delighted generations of holiday makers for over 150 years.

The cliff-top path offers a wonderful walk, with panoramic views of the bay and continues all the way to Shanklin, passing Lake, which has its own railway station hotels, guest houses, shops and water sports centre. Sandown seafront is just yards from the town’s shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, with easy level walking along the broad promenades and sea wall. Safe bathing and a mild climate with consistently high placing in the UK’s sunshine records provide the essential ingredients for a summer holiday. You will find deckchairs, beach huts, water sports and the pier, which dates from 1879 and now provides all-weather amusements and the opportunity to walk out over the sea.

Along Culver Parade you’ll find tennis, bowls, crazy golf, a pitch and putt course, the Isle of Wight (Tiger) Zoo and the Dinosaur Isle museum. At the southern end of town, the Heights Leisure Centre has indoor swimming pools, and further inland is a fine 18 hole golf course. Sandown Carnival in July is the Island’s first of the season, the Regatta are in August.

You can enjoy a pleasure flight from Sandown Airport, or take the footpath to Borthwood Copse, which is especially beautiful in Spring, when carpeted with bluebells. Continue along the Newport Road to visit Amazon World which is open throughout the year.

Local Towns & Villages

Shanklin

Shanklin is a town of great character and charm with many interesting small shops and a variety of hotels and apartments in former Victorian country houses. Sheltering cliffs provide the ideal suntrap position for the seafront Esplanade, where there is safe bathing from a sandy beach, water sports, car parks, hotels, amusements and a host of pubs and restaurants. The first week of August is traditionally Carnival Week with carnival parades in the town and sports and fireworks at the County Ground. Later in August, Shanklin Regatta is one of the highlights of the year with a firework finale which lights up the bay.

Shanklin Old Village is a perennial attraction where most of the picturesque cottages clustered around the thatched Crab Inn have now become craft and gift shops or restaurants. Follow the lane from the Old Village to reach Shanklin’s famous Chine, a dramatic fissure in the rock where a 45 ft waterfall cascades through boulders and ferns to the shore.

Shanklin’s public parks and gardens are a delight to visit. Tower Gardens and Rylstone Gardens run alongside the Chine where red squirrels may be spotted, the latter having been called the most picturesque in the south of England. One can also stroll in the Big Mead, adjacent to the historic St Blasius Church, or along the spectacular coastal paths to Sandown or Bonchurch.

Godshill, just a short bus ride away, has a number of visitor attractions. The village is famous for its picture postcard scene of thatched cottages around the hill-top church.

Local Towns & Villages

Ventnor

A Victorian town with a Mediterranean feel, is one of the sunniest spots on the Island. Built on a series of terraces beneath St Boniface Down the town’s roads zigzag down to the sea past the beautifully planted cascades.

Ventnor grew up as a health resort in the Victorian era. These famous 22 acre gardens have Mediterranean, alpine and medicinal herb plantings, herbaceous borders, shrubs and trees. A modern visitor centre is accessible to all and there is a passenger lift to the gardens below. There is also a children’s play park and Temperate House containing many exotic plants.

The seafront enjoys a surprisingly mild climate due to sheltering cliffs, and southerly aspect. The western Esplanade has a part , part fine shingle beach, good for sunbathing and swimming and adjacent to pubs, cafés, amusements, paddling pool and seafront car park.

The seafront’s eastern promenade leads to Bonchurch, the Island’s best preserved Victorian village much favoured by prominent Victorian literati.

The car park at the western end of the Esplanade adjoins the coastal path along the western cliffs, which affords spectacular views of the bay. The path winds inland to Ventnor Park where you will find a putting green and beautiful gardens before continuing on to Castle Cove and along the sea wall to picturesque Steephill Cove and the Botanic Gardens.

Local Towns & Villages

Newport

Geographically located in the centre of the Island, Newport is its principal town and main shopping centre. Excellent roads and bus services make it easy to reach from anywhere on the Island and the Southern Vectis bus terminus is right in the centre of town. Enjoy browsing in the major chain stores or the many individual and intriguing little shops to be found in the lanes leading off the High Street and two main squares.

Richard de Redvers founded the town of Newport, laying out streets in a grid pattern, with a straight road from Quay to Castle. Nowadays the castle opens daily to provide visitors with a fascinating living history experience.

Historic buildings have been restored to provide the tiny Apollo Theatre in Pyle Street and the Quay Arts Centre, housed in former warehouses, on the western bank of the river, where you will find pubs, sports facilities and a cycle way to Cowes. Leisure sports are available at Seaclose Park and at the nearby Mountbatten Centre, a modern complex with swimming pool, theatre, and adjoining Arboretum.

Newport harbour provides facilities for the visiting yachtsmen, and the Riverside Centre, which is accessible to all, has a waterfront restaurant. Car and coach parks beside the river are convenient for visiting the Classic Boat Museum, the Bus and Coach Museum and the craft studios at Jubilee Stores. Whatever your age or interest, you will enjoy a great evening.

Local Towns & Villages

Ryde

Known as the Gateway to the Island because it is so easy to reach. Ryde is just a short sea crossing from Portsmouth or Southsea. With the construction of the pier in 1814, and the establishment of a regular ferry service in 1825, the town became an elegant .

Ryde’s main attraction is its miles of glorious golden sand and shallow coastal waters that extend all the way around the coast to Springvale and Seaview. The tide goes out a long way, leaving firm sand ideal for beach games. Stroll along the sea wall to Puckpool Park, with café, tennis and children’s play park.

Appley Park has pitch and putt and the Victorian landmark Appley Tower.

Union Street and the long High Street beyond are packed with interesting shops, pubs, and restaurants. Collectors will be fascinated by the many antique and bric-a-brac shops in the Upper High Street and the Victoria Arcade in Union Street, with its tiny boutiques, curio shops, cafés and cellar flea market.

On the east side of the creek is the Fishbourne car ferry terminus. To the east of Ryde are the villages of Seaview, Nettlestone, St Helens and Bembridge. Sailing is the main summer activity of Seaview and Bembridge, whilst St Helens has its village green, where sports and carnivals are held. The Island’s only surviving windmill is at Bembridge.

Steve’s Beach @ Sandown

For the hire of beach huts (by the day or week), deckchairs, sun loungers (including mattresses), parasols and wind breaks, we can thoroughly recommend Steve and his daughter Jen’s commitment to making holiday makers welcome and comfortable on the 2 stretches of his beach areas, the closest being at the far end of Culver Parade just past the Sundial beach café, in front of Horizons Café and Takeaway (both of which we highly recommend).

Closer to Sandown Pier you will find Steve’s other beach area, equally well looked after. Mention you are staying in Dave’s chalets at Sandown Bay Holiday Centre to Steve or Jen. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on Steve’s beach from late Spring through to early Autumn (dates clearly signposted at regular intervals along the sea front.

There are however a number of very accessible dog friendly beaches dotted along Sandown Bay from your closest beach at Yaverland all the way to Shanklin.
