Greetings from County Crime Stoppers. We have had another busy year as we continue to meet monthly as well as participate in lots of community activities. Our meetings continue to be held at the Westville Police Dept and we are pleased to report that we have one new member. We also continue our partnership with United Commercial Travellers so that we support one another in community activities. We held an information session this year in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies dealing with problems our youth encounter particularly in our school situations. This session was geared to parents and teachers and we will be Margie MacDonald repeating it in the fall. Of particular interest was the topic of drugs and the education Board Chair, Pictou County parents and teachers are looking for with the new laws surrounding legalization of marijuana. We have also taken part in an awareness session for the public regarding volunteer organizations seeking new volunteers to boost their numbers. We also joined local police agencies for a Police Week display at the local Wellness Centre. We have also supported Viola’s Place, the new homeless centre that is coming to Pictou County. The jail was a big hit in the Canada Day parade in Westville and the Lobster Carnival parade in Pictou where we won an award for the best non- commercial float. We have also done some presentations to seniors groups about cyber security and ways to keep your personal information safe. Lots of information was also shared about the number of scams that are constantly on the go and often target seniors. One of our members has also been very busy making unique crafts which have proved to be good fund raisers. We look forward to continuing our work in Crime Stoppers and promoting this very important organization in our part of the province.

No significant differences between girls and boys were found in this type of bullying.

• Social bullying: Students who engage in social bullying are not likely to get caught. Instead, their harmful intentions are masked because the consequences cannot always be seen or heard. In one Canadian study, 41% of all students in grades 4 to 7 reported that they were victims of bullying and/or bullied others monthly. 7% of these students said they were victims of social bullying on a weekly basis, and 2% reported that they bullied other students socially on a weekly basis. Girls are more likely than boys to bully socially and to be victims of this form of bullying. www.publicsafety.gc.ca HOW FREQUENT IS BULLYING? In Canada, studies suggest that roughly 6% of students aged 12 to 19, report bullying others on a weekly basis, 8% report that they are victims of bullying weekly, and 1% report that they are both victimized and bully others on a weekly basis. Bullying surveys also indicate that many more boys than girls report being victims of bullying and almost all boys named male peers as the aggressors. A recent self report survey on delinquency among Toronto youth indicates that 16% of youths in grades 7 to 9 had been bullied on more than 12 occasions during the year prior to the survey.
