Kuprewicz1 Department of Biology, University of Miami, 1301 Memorial Drive, Coral Gables, FL, 33146, U.S.A. ABSTRACT In Neotropical forests, mammals act as seed dispersers and predators. To prevent seed predation and promote dispersal, seeds exhibit physical or chemical defenses. Collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu) cannot eat some hard seeds, but can digest chemically defended seeds. Central American agoutis (Dasyprocta punctata) gnaw through hard-walled seeds, but cannot consume chemically defended seeds. The objectives of this study were to determine relative peccary and agouti abundances within a lowland forest in Costa Rica and to assess how these two mammals affect the survival of large seeds that have no defenses (Iriartea deltoidea, Socratea exorrhiza), physical defenses (Astrocaryum alatum, Dipteryx panamensis), or chemical defenses (Mucuna holtonii) against seed predators. Mammal abundances were deter- mined over 3 yrs from open-access motion-detecting camera trap photos. Using semi-permeable mammal exclosures and thread-marked seeds, predation and dispersal by mammals for each seed species were quantified. Abundances of peccaries were up to six times higher than those of agoutis over 3 yrs, but neither peccary nor agouti abundances differed across years. Seeds of A. alatum were predomi- nantly dispersed by peccaries, which did not eat A. alatum seeds, whereas non-defended and chemically defended seeds suffered high levels of predation, mostly by peccaries. Agoutis did not eat M. holtonii seeds. Peccaries and agoutis did not differ in the distances they dispersed seeds. -

J964 Einleitung Die rezente südamerikanische Säugetierfauna hat durch ihre charakteristische Zusam- mensetzung seit jeher die Tiergeographen interessiert, ist doch die neotropische Region eines der kennzeichnendsten Faunengebiete überhaupt. Um die Zusammensetzung der Fauna verstehen zu können, ist die Kenntnis des geschichtlichen Werdens notwendig. Dieses Werden kann jedoch aus der gegenwärtigen Fauna bzw. der Verbreitung der einzelnen Arten allein nicht rekonstruiert werden. Dazu sind Fossilfunde erforderlich. Erst diese lassen, sofern sie stratigraphisch sicher eingestuft sind, durch ihr verschieden- zeitliches Auftreten Schlußfolgerungen über die wechselnde Zusammensetzung der Fauna im Laufe der Zeit zu. Sind überdies die stammesgeschichtlichen Zusammenhänge bekannt, so können — sofern die Fossilfunde dazu ausreichen — auch Aussagen über die Geschichte der einzelnen Faunengruppen gemacht werden. The local fauna from Tiupampa in Bolivia is -59.0 Ma, and is thus early Late Paleocene in age. Taxa from the lower part of the Lumbrera Formation in NW Argentina (long regarded as Early Eocene) are between -58.0-55.5 Ma, and thus Late Paleocene in age. A reassessment of the ages of local faunas from lhe Rfo Chico Formation in the San Jorge basin, Patagonia, southern Argentina, shows that lhe local fauna from the Banco Negro Infeiior is -60.0 Ma, mak- ing this the most ancient Cenozoic mammal fauna in South,America. Kalthoff2 & Guillaume Billet1 & Helder Gomes Rodrigues1,3,4 # The Author(s) 2019 Abstract Notoungulates are an extinct clade of South American mammals, comprising a large diversity of body sizes and skeletal morphologies, and including taxa with highly specialized dentitions. The evolutionary history of notoungulates is characterized by numerous dental convergences, such as continuous growth of both molars and incisors, which repeatedly occurred in late- diverging families to counter the effects of abrasion. The main goal of this study is to determine if the acquisition of high-crowned incisors in different notoungulate families was accompanied by significant and repeated changes in their enamel microstructure. More generally, it aims at identifying evolutionary patterns of incisor enamel microstructure in notoungulates. Fifty-eight samples of incisors encompassing 21 genera of notoungulates were sectioned to study the enamel microstructure using a scanning electron microscope. We showed that most Eocene taxa were characterized by an incisor schmelzmuster involving only radial enamel. Interestingly, derived schmelzmusters involving the presence of Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB) and of modified radial enamel occurred in all four late-diverging families, mostly in parallel with morphological specializations, such as crown height increase. Despite a high degree of homoplasy, some characters detected at different levels of enamel complexity (e.g., labial versus lingual sides, upper versus lower incisors) might also be useful for phylogenetic reconstructions. Comparisons with perissodactyls showed that notoungulates paralleled equids in some aspects related to abrasion resistance, in having evolved transverse to oblique HSB combined with modified radial enamel and high-crowned incisors. -

Formerly Dasyprocta aguti, and also known as the Brazilian agouti and as “Cutia” in Brazil and “Acure” in Venezuela. The average Dasyprocta leporina weighs approximately between 3 kg and 6 kg with a body length of about 49-64 cm. They are medium sized caviomorph rodents (Wilson and Reeder, 2005) with brown fur consisting of darker spots of brown covering their upper body and a white stripe running down the centre of their underside (Eisenberg, 1989). Show sexual dimorphism as the males are usually smaller in size than the females but have a similar appearance (Wilson and Reeder, 2005). Locomotion is quadrupedal. Forefeet have four toes while hind feet (usually longer than forefeet) have 3. Small round ears with short hairless tail not more than 6 cm in length (Dubost 1998). Dasyprocta leporina is found in the tropical forests of Trinidad and conserved in the Central Range Wildlife Sanctuary at the headwaters of the Tempuna and Talparo watersheds in central Trinidad (Bacon and Ffrench 1972). They are South American natives and are distributed widely in Venezuela, French Guiana and Amazon forests of Brazil (Asquith et al. 1999; Dubost 1998). Has widespread distribution in the Neotropics (Eisenberg 1989; Emmons and Feer 1997). -

An easy-to-navigate pocket guide to the Meeting is also available to delegates. Venue The Annual Meeting will take place in the faculties of Philosophy and Philology on the Blasco Ibañez Campus of the University of Valencia. The Symposium will take place in the Salon Actos Manuel Sanchis Guarner in the Faculty of Philology. The main meeting will take place in this and a nearby lecture theatre (Salon Actos, Faculty of Philosophy). There is a Metro stop just a few metres from the campus that connects with the centre of the city in 5-10 minutes (Line 3-Facultats). Alternatively, the campus is a 20-25 minute walk from the ‘old town’. Registration Registration will be possible before and during the Symposium at the entrance to the Salon Actos in the Faculty of Philosophy. During the main meeting the registration desk will continue to be available in the Faculty of Philosophy. Oral Presentations All speakers (apart from the symposium speakers) have been allocated 15 minutes. It is therefore expected that you prepare to speak for no more than 12 minutes to allow time for questions and switching between presenters. We have a number of parallel sessions in nearby lecture theatres so timing will be especially important. -

UN NUEVO MIOCLAENIDO SUDAMERICANO (MAMMALIA: UNGULATOMORPHA) DEL TERCIARIO DE PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA. Se describe un nuevo “condilartro” Mioclaenidae, proveniente de la Edad Mamífero Casamayorense, Subedad Barranquense, de Paso de Indios, Provincia del Chubut. El nuevo ta- xón Pascualodus patagoniensis gen. et sp. nov., representado por un molar superior izquierdo, es compara- do con otros Mioclaenidae, con los Didolodontidae y los más primitivos Litopterna. Una hipótesis filoge- nética provisoria es expresada a través de un cladograma de consenso estricto y uno de compromiso de mayoría. Si bien el análisis confirma la agrupación de los taxa sudamericanos en un grupo monofilético, existen numerosos puntos sin resolver. Pascualodus patagoniensis se ubica como un taxón terminal, en una politomía que reúne por un lado a los Mioclaenidae sudamericanos y por el otro, a los Didolodontidae y Litopterna. Por otra parte la consideración de caracteres dentales superiores de Escribania chubutensis, pre- viamente el único Mioclaenidae patagónico conocido, modifica sus relaciones filogenéticas vinculándolo al Didolodontidae Didolodus sp. La asignación de Pascualodus patagoniensis a los Mioclaenidae constituye el registro más moderno y el más austral de la familia. Abstract. A new Mioclaenidae “condylarth” of the Casamayoran Land Mammal Age, Barrancan subage, from Paso de Indios, Chubut Province is described. The new taxon Pascualodus patagoniensis gen. et sp. nov., represented by a left upper first molar, is compared with other Mioclaenidae; the Didolodontidae and some primitive litopterns. -
