When building ahome, the most important first step is to have astrongfoundation that can support the rooms, furniture and lives that will rest upon it. In serving, it’s equally important to have asolid foundation to support the work we do.Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is that support. It enablesLionstodowork that would otherwise be out of reach. But without the contributions of Lions and friends,LCIF would not be strong enough to support all the work thatneeds to be done.Itwould not be able to help fund the water pipes being installed in Malawi or the gender-equityprogrammesfor young people in India. It wouldn’thave been able to send emergency aid to the people of California when devastatingfiresripped through their town, destroying everything. Right now, these places mayseem farawayfrom your town and the needs of your community. Youmay be focused on the local homeless shelter that needs food or the high school in desperate need of anew gymnasium. And maybe, right now, your Club can raise the funds for those efforts. But one day, your communitymay need help from LCIF. “LCIF enables Lions to do work that would otherwise be out of reach” And LCIF will be there for your community. Butonly because millions of Lionsaroundthe world recognised that your town is just as importantastheirs. They said: “I will help, nomatterwhere the need.”And that is how we supportone another. That is how we make this aworld of interconnectedcommunities. Aworld of Lions. That is whyitismore important now −when so many challenges face our global community−that Lions recognise and contribute to the work thatLCIF empowers. After all, it could be our communitythatneeds it next. • EB42 a Short History of Findon and the Racehorse
A short history of Findon and the racehorse 1 At the start of the 19C race meetings were held on the downland gallops below Blackpatch Hill at the western edge of Findon parish, the course being known as Michel Grove (an estate mainly in the neighbouring Clapham and Patching parishes). Later in the century race meetings were held on the gallops below West Hill at the south west end of Findon parish. In the 19C horse racing featured much more in ordinary rural life than it does today, as the horse was still vital to agricultural activities and local transport. Knowledge of race horses in training was wide and racing was keenly followed as a sport and an opportunity for social gatherings, Race meetings were also being held on the downs at Lewes at this time and on the downs at Goodwood and Brighton in Sussex which still hold meetings today, like Epsom, Ascot, Sandown and Lingfield in Surrey. Fontwell and Plumpton in Sussex still hold regular national hunt race meetings over hurdles and fences while the race meetings at Newbury in Berkshire and Cheltenham attract the highest quality national hunt horses. Around 1853-1854 Henry Padwick, a well known member of the Danebury ‘Confederacy’, a very successful group of individuals that sent out many ‘Classic’ winners from the racing stables at Danebury, near Stockbridge racecourse in Hampshire, built new brick and flint stables and a trainer’s house, at the top of Stable Lane, Findon on the site of a cottage and outbuildings which appear on the 1839 Tithe Map.

  • This Walk Description Is from Happyhiker.Co.Uk Fairfield
This walk description is from happyhiker.co.uk Fairfield Horseshoe Starting point and OS Grid reference Car park on the north side of Ambleside (NY 376047) Ordnance Survey map OL5 The English Lakes - North Eastern Area and OL7 The English Lakes – South Eastern Area Distance 10.5 miles Traffic light rating Introduction: This is a strenuous walk but one which is mostly an easy to route find, providing you have good visibility. Gaiters are recommended for the descent which can be boggy in places. To fully cover the route at 1:25000, you need the two OS maps listed above. Start: The walk starts in the main car-park at Ambleside, opposite The Armitt Museum (NY 376047). To use this car park, you may need a second mortgage and a plentiful supply of pound coins! It is a waste of time trying to economise by trying to find free parking in the town. There is none - the Council have things sewn up. Ambleside is on the A591 between Kendal and Keswick. The exorbitant car park is on A591 at the north west edge of the town. To begin the walk, turn left out of the car park and walk along the A591 for about 1/3 of a mile. Shortly after you pass the national speed limit sign, look out on the right for a bungalow/lodgehouse behind some substantial stone gateposts with iron gates (NY 372052). There is a fingerpost here indicating Public Footpath to Rydal Hall but it is not easy to spot and probably disappears into the shrubbery in spring/summer.

  • Membership Retention in Scout Troops
W o r l d S c i e n s s t i f e i r c g C n o Membership Retention in Scout Troops Liam Morland Online Course Developer Distance Education, University of Waterloo, Canada (Rersearch, experiences) 1 Introduction The headline of Scouts Canada’s annual report exclaimed in big letters “Membership is Climbing! ”. The report went on to praise the exciting programme Scouts Canada offers and to thank Scouters and others for making it all happen. That was in 1996, when membership rose to 231,042 members, an increase of 1% (Scouts Canada 1996:17). It was the first year of membership growth since 1981, but it was also the last. As of 2007, membership was 99,573. The 57% decline between 1996 and 2007 is not the full story. At the height of membership in 1965, Scouts Canada had 321,608 members consisting of 288,084 young people and 33,524 adults. At this time, the Beaver section did not exist; young people had to be eight years old before they could join. With Beavers removed for a proper comparison, 2007 youth membership was 52,674, a decline of 82% since 1965. This membership decline, both long-term and in recent years, is a pressing concern for Scouts Canada. Since Scouting is a non-formal educational movement for young people, fewer members means that Scouts Canada is further from achieving its mission. On a practical level, Scouts Canada spent $139 per youth member on staff salaries and benefits during 2006/2007 (Scouts Canada 2007:4).

  • A History of the University of Manchester Since 1951
Pullan2004jkt 10/2/03 2:43 PM Page 1 University ofManchester A history ofthe HIS IS THE SECOND VOLUME of a history of the University of Manchester since 1951. It spans seventeen critical years in T which public funding was contracting, student grants were diminishing, instructions from the government and the University Grants Commission were multiplying, and universities feared for their reputation in the public eye. It provides a frank account of the University’s struggle against these difficulties and its efforts to prove the value of university education to society and the economy. This volume describes and analyses not only academic developments and changes in the structure and finances of the University, but the opinions and social and political lives of the staff and their students as well. It also examines the controversies of the 1970s and 1980s over such issues as feminism, free speech, ethical investment, academic freedom and the quest for efficient management. The author draws on official records, staff and student newspapers, and personal interviews with people who experienced the University in very 1973–90 different ways. With its wide range of academic interests and large student population, the University of Manchester was the biggest unitary university in the country, and its history illustrates the problems faced by almost all British universities. The book will appeal to past and present staff of the University and its alumni, and to anyone interested in the debates surrounding higher with MicheleAbendstern Brian Pullan education in the late twentieth century. A history of the University of Manchester 1951–73 by Brian Pullan with Michele Abendstern is also available from Manchester University Press.
