Athletic Directors in ’s Public and Private Secondary Schools

Sponsored by 5 Star, Daktronics, Big Teams, Crown Trophy, NFHS, Musco Spring 2012 www.msada-md.org President’s Message Greetings. Spring is here and our state championship tournaments are upon us, which makes us realize that another year is coming to a close. It also means summer is right around the corner. I hope you have had a productive year at your school and encourage you to use some of the summer months to relax, rejuvenate and spend time with your family and friends.

It has been my pleasure to serve as President the past year and it has been something I have found to be very fulfilling. The job as an athletic administrator is never done and rarely understood, and by working together as a member of the MSADA family I hope you know you are not alone and have a great support structure in place.

I hope you had a chance to attend the MSADA’s 36th state conference in late April. It was very informative; as usual, chock full of new ideas. It gives us all a chance to realize how we can always help each other to become better at our profession. If you came away with one Derek Maki, CMAA new idea or vision, then the conference served its purpose.

As I made my way around, attending a few workshops, stopping in at some LTI classes, and interacting with the vendors I realize how great of an opportunity this is for our continued development of leaders in our schools.

The workshops were well attended, we had more LTI classes than ever before and the speakers were informative and inspiring. Thanks to our Executive Council and MSADA officers for working so hard at putting the conference program together.

As I stated at the banquet, seeing what goes on every year always reminds me of In This Issue a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, Page 2 “What are you doing for others?” 2012 Conference Workshops and Leadership Training Courses By attending this conference you continue to collect ideas, come up with plans Page 3 and keep up with current practices not for yourself but for your coaches, parents, Professional Development for fellow ADs , your community and most importantly your students. Volleyball Coaches Yes, we do for others. We are never in the forefront but usually in the background, Page 4 & 5 sometimes under appreciated. We do for others because it’s our job and the 2012 MSADA/NIAAA Awards reason we got into this profession in the first place. Always, keep the focus. Page 8 NIAAA News As we look to the future, we have a new strategic plan that will guide us through Page 10 2015. Please familiarize yourself with it by viewing it on our website. We are looking New and Aspiring AD Workshop for new members to get involved so please consider joining the Executive Council, running for an office or becoming an LTI Instructor. We were fortunate to have great guest speakers deliver The willingness of many individuals to share their powerful messages in the general session, the banquet knowledge and experience in workshops was evident and the breakfast. These speakers included: from the beginning. LTI courses were also popular, as many individuals took advantage of taking classes that are usually available only at the National Conference or just released by the NIAAA. With a large state faculty, Maryland is able to offer a wide range of classes that few states can ever hope to, which is a major reason why our state is a leader in certification and professional development. The success of the LTI program can be attributed to the hard work of David Anderson, CAA and Ronald Belinko, CMAA, who serve as LTI Coordinators. They are instrumental in the expansion of our state faculty and taking the various courses to local counties in addition to what is offered at the conference and summer institute. 2012 Athletic Director of the Year

Marcia Nissel, CMAA North Hagerstown High School

Marcia grew up in New Jersey, where she attended Piscataway Township High School and South Plainfield High School. While in high school, Marcia played field hockey, basketball, and participated on the track and field team. After graduating from high school in 1968, Marcia attended Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972. While in college, Marcia played basketball and softball. In addition, she earned her National Association of Girls and Women in Sports National Volleyball Officials ranking and has officiated volleyball on the high school and collegiate levels.

In 1974, Marcia began her physical education teaching career at Hancock High School in Washington County in western Maryland. While at Hancock, she coached basketball and softball. From 1978 to 1980, Marcia taught at Old Forge/Paramount Elementary School before she transferred to North Hagerstown High School, where she’s been ever since. In addition to her teaching duties, Marcia coached golf for two years and softball for 12 years, earning Softball Coach of the Year honors in 1983 and 1995.

Marcia became the athletic director at North Hagerstown in 1987. She oversees 19 sports with 28 teams in a gender balanced program. In addition, to her athletic administrative duties, she has been the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s West Region Volleyball Tournament Director for the past six years. In 2011, she took on the duty of Unified Sports Coordinator for Washington County. However, one of Marcia’s proudest achievements was overseeing the stadium project at North Hagerstown. In 2006, the dream came true, the stadium opened and North Hagerstown no longer had to travel to another stadium for a home game.

When Marcia became the athletic director, she became a member of the MSADA and 12 years ago she became the District 1 Representative which included keeping all the secondary schools in western Maryland informed and updated about the activities of the MSADA. She has been an integral part of all the MSADA conferences by helping out with registration, teaching Leadership Training Courses (LTC) and administering the Certified Athletic Administrators (CAA) examination.

Marcia has been a member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) for more than 16 years, earning her CAA in 1999 and her CMAA in 2007. She has completed more than 21 LTCs and is qualified to teach LTC 502 and LTC 611. Marcia has had the opportunity to attend many of the NIAAA National Conferences and 2001 she presided over one of the workshops that was offered.

Marcia also found time to volunteer for the Student Government Association’s food bank collection and fundraise for several other organizations. She attends many athletic events, even when her teams are not competing.

Marcia’s hard work has not gone unnoticed. In 1998, 2002 and again this year, her colleagues selected her as their District Athletic Director of the Year. In 2004, the MSADA Council selected her as the recipient of the NIAAA State Award of Merit.

Congratulations, Marcia. This award is well deserved. Maryland State Athletict Directors Association26 P 7

Another Valuable Resource

The NFHS produced a video, which can be accessed on YouTube, which presents the purpose, approach and value of coaching education and national certification. As an athletic administrator, this would be a good resource to show your coaches and also perhaps to share with your principal and booster club when you are looking for financial support.

New NCAA Division I Initial-Eligibility Standards

The initial-eligibility standards for NCAA Division I college-bound student-athletes are changing. College-bound student-athletes first entering a Division I college or university on or after August 1, 2016, will need to meet new academic rules in order to receive athletics aid (scholarship), practice or compete during their first year.

First, here are three terms you need to know:

Full Qualifier: A college-bound student-athlete may receive athletics aid (scholarship), practice and compete in the first year of enrollment at the Division I college or university.

Academic Redshirt: A college-bound student-athlete may receive athletics aid (scholarship) in the first year of enrollment and may practice in the first regular academic term (semester or quarter) but may NOT compete in the first year of enrollment. After the first term is complete, the college-bound student-athlete must be academically successful at his/her college or university to continue to practice for the rest of the year.

Nonqualifier: A college-bound student-athlete cannot receive athletics aid (scholarship), cannot practice and cannot compete in the first year of enrollment.

Here are the new requirements:

Full Qualifier must: 1. Complete 16 core courses (same distribution as in the past .)– click here to view); • Ten of the 16 core courses must be completed before the seventh semester (senior year) of high school.

o Seven of the 10 core courses must be English, math or science. 2. Have a minimum core-course GPA of 2.300; • Grades earned in the 10 required courses required before the senior year are “locked in” for purposes of GPA calculation. A repeat of one of the “locked in” courses will not be used to improve the New NCAA oDivision I Initial-Eligibility Standards Page No. 2 GPA if taken after the seventh semester begins. ______3. Meet the competition sliding scale requirement of GPA and ACT/SAT score (this is a new scale with increased GPA/test score requirements); and

4. Graduate from high school. Academic Redshirt must: 1. Complete 16 core courses (same distribution as in the past – click here to view); 2. Have a minimum core-course GPA of 2.000; 3. Meet the academic redshirt sliding scale requirement of GPA and ACT/SAT score; and 4. Graduate from high school.

Nonqualifier is a college-bound student-athlete who fails to meet the standards for a qualifier or for an academic redshirt.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE NEW RULES AND SLIDING SCALES.

Examples:

Q: A college-bound student-athlete completes 15 core courses with a 2.500 core- course GPA and an 820 SAT score (critical reading and math). What is the college-bound student-athlete’s NCAA initial-eligibility status? A: The college-bound student-athlete is a nonqualifier because only 15 core courses were completed, not the required 16 core courses.

Q: A college-bound student-athlete completes 16 core courses in the required framework with a 2.500 core-course GPA and a 68 sum ACT. What is the college- bound student-athlete’s initial-eligibility status? A: The college-bound student-athlete is an academic redshirt. Under the new competition scale, a 68 sum ACT score requires a 2.950 core-course GPA.

Q: A college-bound student-athlete completes nine core courses prior to the seventh semester of high school. What is the college-bound student-athlete’s initial- eligibility status? A: The college-bound student-athlete cannot be certified as a qualifier because only nine of the 10 required courses were completed before the seventh semester. He/she would be permitted to practice and receive aid (scholarship), provided he/she presents 16 core courses and meets the necessary core-course GPA and test-score requirement at the time of graduation.

Divisions I and II Initial-Eligibility Requirements

Core Courses

 NCAA Division I requires 16 core courses. NCAA Division II currently requires 14 core courses. Division II will require 16 core courses for students enrolling on or after August 1, 2013. See the charts below.  NCAA Division I will require 10 core courses to be completed prior to the seventh semester (seven of the 10 must be a combination of English, math or natural or physical science that meet the distribution requirements below). These 10 courses become "locked in" at the seventh semester and cannot be retaken for grade improvement. o Beginning August 1, 2016, it will be possible for a Division I college-bound student-athlete to still receive athletics aid and the ability to practice with the team if he or she fails to meet the 10 course requirement, but would not be able to compete.

Test Scores

 Division I uses a sliding scale to match test scores and core grade-point averages (GPA). The sliding scale for those requirements is shown on Page No. 2 of this sheet.  Division II requires a minimum SAT score of 820 or an ACT sum score of 68.  The SAT score used for NCAA purposes includes only the critical reading and math sections. The writing section of the SAT is not used.  The ACT score used for NCAA purposes is a sum of the following four sections: English, mathematics, reading and science.  When you register for the SAT or ACT, use the NCAA Eligibility Center code of 9999 to ensure all SAT and ACT scores are reported directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center from the testing agency. Test scores that appear on transcripts will not be used.

Grade-Point Average

 Be sure to look at your high school’s List of NCAA Courses on the NCAA Eligibility Center's website (www.eligibilitycenter.org). Only courses that appear on your school's List of NCAA Courses will be used in the calculation of the core GPA. Use the list as a guide.  Division I students enrolling full time before August 1, 2016, should use Sliding Scale A to determine eligibility to receive athletics aid, practice and competition during the first year.  Division I GPA required to receive athletics aid and practice on or after August 1, 2016, is 2.000 (corresponding test-score requirements are listed on Sliding Scale B on Page No. 2 of this sheet).  Division I GPA required to be eligible for competition on or after August 1, 2016, is 2.300 (corresponding test-score requirements are listed on Sliding Scale B on Page No. 2 of this sheet).  The Division II core GPA requirement is a minimum of 2.000.  Remember, the NCAA GPA is calculated using NCAA core courses only.
