Newfoundland Performing Arts. Scripts COLL-144 Website: Archives and Special Collections Author: Weir, Gail Date: 1993

Scope and Content: This collection contains copies of scripts of local theatrical productions written for the stage, radio and television. The collection commenced in 1982 when actor Rick Boland was employed for a short period to help set up the Newfoundland Performing Arts Archive Project, a joint project of the Centre for Newfoundland Studies of the Queen Elizabeth II Library and the Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive. The collection would document original script writing in Newfoundland.

Many of the scripts are radio plays which were photocopied from those contained in collections in the Archives and Special Collections. As collections from theatre companies, individual actors and writers are received by the Archives, scripts from the collections are copied for inclusion in the Script Collection.

Researchers should be aware that partial scripts and notes towards scripts are to be found in various collections and these should be checked if a script is not listed in this finding aid. The collection will be of interest to students of Newfoundland drama and has grown into a valuable resource for academic researchers as well as those restaging productions.

Custodial History: The Script Collection is a composite collection originating from many sources including the original authors; actors who performed in the plays; and theatre companies and radio stations which produced the plays.

Restrictions: There are no restrictions on access. Copyright laws and regulations may apply to all or to parts of this collection. All patrons should be aware that copyright regulations state that any copy of archival material is to be used solely for the purpose of research or private study. Any use of the copy for any other purpose may require the authorization of the copyright owner. It is the patron's responsibility to obtain such authorization.

Biography or History: In 1982, Anne Hart, Head of the Centre for Newfoundland Studies (CNS) at the Queen Elizabeth II Library, and actor Rick Boland saw the need to collect scripts of local productions before they were lost. They met with Neil Rosenberg of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive (MUNFLA) and soon a joint project was under way to collect primary material dealing with the performing arts in Newfoundland. Paper material would be housed in CNS and audiovisual material would be cared for by MUNFLA.

Boland was hired on a contractual basis to get the project started. He began by compiling a directory of sources, obtained interviews with the media, and did a great deal of networking. From his LSPU Hall contacts, Boland gathered about 45 scripts of productions by companies originating in the "Newfoundland Theatre Renaissance" of the 1970s, including The Mummers Troupe, The Newfoundland Travelling Theatre Company, Rising Tide, and Sheila's Brush. Some of these scripts were in their final forms, but other productions had been written by collectives with scripts surviving in a very rudimentary state. Occasional tapes of performances, and notes in various hands, of directions and sudden inspirations as scenes gained momentum, provide valuable insights into the making of innovative theatre. These were then retyped and formed the basis of the Script Collection. In his search for material, Boland discovered that coincidentally CBC Radio producer and local historian, Paul O'Neill, had been toying with the idea of an "entertainment history archives." O'Neill subsequently deposited his collection of CBC Radio scripts with the Archives and Special Collections.

The first major undertaking by the project was the CODCO collection. This consisted of audiocassettes, audiotapes, videotapes, videocassettes and movie film, all of which have been laboriously copied and transcribed by MUNFLA. These transcriptions are not contained in the Script Collection but are located in COLL-121.

Arrangement: For the most part, the scripts are photocopies of both originals and photocopies of scripts that are contained in other collections. The scripts are located in a file cabinet in L3018 and are filed alphabetically by title. There are some plays catalogued in the Archives and Special Collections, some but not all of which are noted here. Search for them under "author" or "title," or under "drama" in the catalogue.
