MEr.~ORMlDUM FOR THE PRES IDENT

Each week I plant column ideas with friends in various parts of the country. As you know , these gossip columns are the best read parts of any newspaper . Attached are two examples of such items from the Chicaqo Tribun~ thi s week.

The David and Julie story was given to me by David and embellished a little by me. I also used it as an anecdote in my appear ance on the Tonight Show with Art Linkletter.

MEMORANDUM FOR______THE PRESIDENT------.---w------Attached is an editorial from Wednesda.y's Los Angel 8 Times which is highly dam ging to Senator Murphy. I understand that the San Francisco Chronicle also has something of a negative nature.

Three months or 80 ago I found at one of the political m etings conducted by the Vice President that the Senate Campaign Committee was saying that Murphy had a. safe seat. I asked them to look into it more. I then talked privately with Rogers Morton and the Vice President and told them the facts 1 had heard in regarding Murphy and Technicolor, Inc. I said I felt I should not tell an90ne else so all not to tie it to anyone else t the White House or Bob Finch. It was agreed that Morton, who was to ee in , would make some inquiries and, if necessary, the Vice President would discu8s this with Murphy and probably yourself.

Most of the California Republicans whitewash any doubt of Murphy's electability. I made certain that Morton would talk privately with Miller who gave him a full fill-in. Whether or not th y took any action I don't know.
