COMMITTEDknow him TO READING PLAN INTRODUCTION

A commitment to follow Jesus is a commitment to know Him. God makes this possible through His written Word, the Bible. :7-14 says,

The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one’s life; the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy making the inexperienced wise. The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad; the command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are reliable and altogether righteous. They are more desirable than gold - than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb. In addition, your servant is warned by them, and in keeping them there is an abundant reward. Who perceives his unintentional sins? Cleanse me from my hid- den faults. Moreover, keep your servant from willful sins; do not let them rule me. Then I will be blameless and cleansed from blatant rebellion. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

God has manifested Himself as our Rock and our Redeemer through the person of Jesus Christ. So, God’s written Word leads us to know God’s Living Word, Jesus. John 1:1, 14 says:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God....The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We ob- served his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. In Psalm 119:11, the psalmist challenges us to go even further by treasur- ing God’s Word in our hearts so that we may not sin against Him.

The goal of this booklet is to help you know and treasure God through His Word. In the following pages, you will find a Bible Reading plan, weekly Bible verses to memorize, and a simple framework to guide your prayer times. We believe these tools will not only help you in your personal commitment to the Lord, but may also facilitate conversations around God’s Word with your family, members of your Life Group, and those with whom you have discipleship relationships.

Each week, we will release a 5 minute podcast focused on the memory verse for that week. Visit The Brainerd Institute website or your favorite podcasting app to listen.

Will you commit to know Him more this year? Will you join your Brainerd faith family as we begin this journey together in 2021?

Wouldn’t it be amazing if every member and family at Brainerd were reading God’s Word together, memorizing His Word, and seeking Him through prayer this year?! Our hope for you in 2021 is simple: that you commit to know Him.

ACTS is an acrostic that serves as a simple framework for our prayer. Each letter of the acrostic functions as a pillars of prayer time and gives priority to what we should be praying.

ADORATION

CONFESSION

THANKSGIVING

SUPPLICATION

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray in Matthew 6:5-18, His model prayer began with adoration (or praise). “Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy.” It’s amazing how many of the psalms are dedicated solely to adoration. When we begin our prayer by praising God, we remind ourselves of our dependence on Him and that His will takes priority over our will. “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

After adoration comes confession. We recognize God’s holiness and our sinfulness. “Forgive us our debts…” 1 John 1:9 gives us this promise, “If we confess our sings, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” God’s grace toward us, will also lead us to have grace on others, “...as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

Thanksgiving should be a natural outpouring of forgiveness and provi- sion. “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever” (Psalm 118:1).

Finally, after adoring our God, confessing our sins, and giving thanks to Him, we lay our petitions before the Lord in the act of supplication. “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting your cares on Him, because He cares about you” (1 Peter 5:6-7). Jesus said it this way in the model prayer, “Give us today our daily bread.”
