Write of Way, by Suesan Way

27th. I called my friend and fellow Board Canadian Geese Member Marty Goldsmith. Marty had been a part of the race scene in the 50’s and I wondered what he knew of Ruth. "Hi Marty, have you ever heard of Ruth Starting the New Year losing family and friends isn’t the way Levy?" "I sure have" he said. "What’s up?" I tell him the I would like it to happen, but it has. Skip’s nephew passed story and ask what he thinks. He says that she was a great away far too young, leaving a huge hole in the collective driver, and he thinks the idea is a great one to invite her to hearts of the Carter family. And not seconds later it seemed, Escape. one or our pals, recent board member and 20 year member, Rick Mills, passed just a couple of weeks before Christmas. Well, Escape's Friday afternoon is somewhat free I am now Again, all too young and leaving behind a wonderful wife, thinking. It would take some work... I wondered where Ruth Kathy, and his family. And then two days before Christmas, lives. Back at Skip’s desk — Solvang. I have no idea where there was Ruth Levy Raymond. My 84 year old pal who I Solvang is (other than California), but the idea is starting to met and became instant friends with (after she stopped being gel. Email to Pete: "Hi Pete, Suesan here – So, if I can get annoyed with me). Ruth to be the A of the Q & A, would you be the Q? "Yes, I will be the Q" Pete answers. In September 2013, Grand Prix Region co-produced a major National PCA event – Escape. Ours was Escape to LA and I call Ruth and she immediately yells at me after I tell her I was the co-chair. Pete Stout, the new Panorama editor, the story about Escape and who I am – asking "Why would suggested a guest speaker, a Porsche racer from the 50s. I had I want to do this?" And I say "because it will be fun and no room on my plate for one more thing, then Skip raised because Pete Stout will be there." That makes her think his eyebrows (as he is known to do) and said: "Her name is for a while, but she isn’t convinced yet. I am sure this will Ruth Levy and she drove a 356 in the 1950s". "NO PLEASE be a success for Escape – Ruth is a Fabulous Fifties driver NO. I can’t". I had a white board the size of LA in my living and part of Porsche history and I am not letting her go. I room with my "to do" list (it had expanded way beyond my carry on "And you drove your last race on October 27th at ability to manage without it). Pomona which is the same place and date where Escape is taking place. We will put you in a car if you want." She is a Skip's open email about Ruth sat on his screen unread all little more interested now "And you can take a leisurely drive morning. It was 1 pm and I had tons to do. OK, just a quick down and stay over in the hotel – we’ll pay the bill – and peek at the email. I wandered over to Skip’s side of the desk we’ll take you out to dinner after the you do the session." She – there was Pete’s email starring at me. I really like Pete is making jokes now and I see why Pete thinks she would be (have I mentioned that) - lovely guy. I scanned the email entertaining. She is fast and quick witted and a little abrasive trying not to get too attached. Porsche race car driver in the (not unlike me), so I push a little more and, of course, she '50s, drove with everyone, 550 Spyders and her 356, writing tells me that I am pushy. I have a fortunate comeback that a book, knew everyone in the day, could tell a great story, works. "Well" she says "I’ll think about it and will call you probably wasn’t a podium speaker but maybe a Q & A kind in the morning, but don’t hold your breath." of person... Ruth Levy, Again I wondered – what kind of Jewish girl gets to race Porsche’s in the ‘50s? I wandered back The next morning at 8:45 the phone rings. "Hi, is this to my desk and went back to work… And then that term we Suesan? "Its Ruth . I’ll do it." And from that day until we all know so well crept into my brain: GOOGLE – RUTH were talking football picks about a week before she passed, LEVY. Otherwise, 2015 is getting off to a great start. I want to thank Bob Fulton again for jumping in and helping with the Circuit production. I have so many things on my plate (which I enjoy) that I sometimes get behind on things. January is here and the Grand Prix Region calendar is start- ing to fi ll out. You'll fi nd several tours and performance driv- Here's looking forward to a great 2015. Last year was my "get ing events already posted (page 2) and, if you're looking for back on the track while you're still young enough and able", more, we've listed many PCA events in surrounding regions so I expect to do lots more this year. (autocross in Santa Maria and San Diego, etc). Thanks for everything. This is a great club to be part of. This issue is coming out a little late (I can blame the holi- days, but it is more likely a result of laziness on my part). Our January Breakfast Club last Saturday at Glory Days in Seal Beach had a great crowd to begin the year. Lots of door prizes and plenty of nice folks and Porsches to interact with. Sleazy Dog Construction I believe I saw 3 Macans and more than a few 356s, includ- ing new member Ralph Sewell's 1961 Coupe that has been in his family for over 50 years. Ralph commented that he also has a 2013 Platinum Silver 911 Carrera 2, but the 356 seems to be the attention getter (he's working on the second 200,000 miles). On the Cover... Our January Breakfast Club also saw Guy Newmark. If you haven't see the You Tube video "Million Mile Porsche," Santa Barbara Region's Ted Lighthizer attended our Drivers Ed event in Fontana last November. I don't know how wet check it out. GPX has teamed up with the San Diego Region to produce a Drivers Ed / Time Trial event at the newly confi gured club track at Spring Mountain. This is a fabu- lous opportunity for fi rst timers and other novices (as well as seasoned veterans) to spend a weekend at a spectacularly wonderful race track.

We will be providing instructors for novices. If you have any questions, contact me (Skip Carter) at 619-992-9927. The Spring Mountain track is a 4 hour (250 mile) drive from Los Angeles. Accommodations are inexpensive and the opportu- nity to drive this new track doesn't come around very often.

7 Performance Driving — In by Skip Carter photos by Ted Lighthiser, Jimmie Mitchell & Darren Cole

November 1st was an exciting one for Grand Prix Region; it was sponsor the fi rst time we had ever rented the infi eld track at the in Fontana. We had a very nice turnout of drivers and great sponsorship from our longest running sponsor and adver- tiser, Circle Porsche in Long Beach.

Of course, everyone knows that California has been in a very severe drought, so who would have thought we'd have rain on that Saturday. The weather reports indicated that it would be light rain in the morning, but clearning. Well, as you can see from SSeanean MolloyMolloy SSteveteve OrrOrr the photos, it was HEAVY rain that went away about noon. Of course, this is not the fi rst time GPX has produced a Drivers Ed / Paul Tordella Time Trial in the rain. Although it makes it a little more diffi cult for those of us producing the event (sometimes you need to be out setting up equipment and there's just no way to avoid getting wet — not to mention the fl ag team!), for the most part, rain actually makes the event more fun and a better learning experience.

OK, I'm sure not everyone will agree with my last statement, but DE is about learning car control, becoming a better driver. Driv- ing schools have to pay money for water trucks to do the same CConnieonnie SomersSomers thing the heavens did for us, at no cost.

Now, my fi rst session out was in the Spec 944. I went out with the windows down, resulting in a pretty wet left side of Skip Carter. When the session ended I realized I had left the Cayenne with the driver's side window down. Fortunately I had plenty of rags to dry it out, and as I was doing that, it occured to me that this was the perfect opportunity to get the Cayenne out on the track.

We got a tech sheet done and a run group sticker and three of us (after all, it does have a full back seat) went out in the heavy downpour. I did one lap at the standard settings, then switched PPatrickatrick BBrassrass to sport mode. The difference was immediately noticable. The car just hunkered down. While the V-6 Turbo has plenty of torque, I wouldn't say that it was over powered (can we get a chip that'll give me another 50 hp???). LLemem LibunaoLibunao Anyway, it was great fun. I managed to pass quite a few cars, including a 911 Turbo and a Vette, something that would never happen on a dry track, but the Cayenne defi nately had an "unfair advantage" that day. I found out later one reason why no one ever passed me. The Cayenne was throwing up such a rooster tail (see cover), no one could get close enough to even try. One of the things Suesan and I enjoy most about Porsche Parades are the tours. The 2014 Parade held in Monterey had several excellent tours to choose from. My favorite was the drive to and tour of the Canepa (www.Canepa.com). This was my fi rst visit, and had been on my list for, literally, decades. The only other place i've been to that I could even begin to compare to was a previous Pa- rade tour to Brumos in Florida.

I'm not going to say any more, but will let the photos tell the story...

Ruth “Mama Roo” Levy Raymond October 29, 1930 – December 23, 2014 Writer, artist and race car driver, Ruth died following a brief illness, surrounded by family and friends who loved and hon- ored her in her fi nal days. Ruth was a member of the Grand Prix Region.

Ruth was born in New York, New York, grew up in Minne- apolis and attended the Minneapolis Institute of Art. While attending school she met Louis (Lou) Levy, a jazz pianist from RRuthuth LevyLevy RaymondRaymond PetePete StoutStout Chicago. They married and had two daughters, Jacqueline MMartyarty GGoldsmitholdsmith SSuesanuesan WWayay CCarterarter and Pamela. After the couple divorced in 1955, Ruth began pursuing dual careers as an artist and race car driver. She excelled at both. After obtaining a sponsor, Ruth purchased a Porsche Speedster and relocated her two daughters to Brentwood, California. She raced successfully, most notably at Willow Springs, Paramount Ranch and Riverside, as well as in the Baha- mas and Caracas, Venezuela. When her racing career ended in 1964, she continued her love of fast cars by stunt PPaulaul GGregorregor (Porsche(Porsche CCarsars NorthNorth America)America) driving, doubling for Shelley Fabares in the 1966 Elvis Presley movie “Spinout.”

Ruth then turned her energies full time to her career as an artist, producing oil paintings, drawings and sculptures, hold- ing successful one-woman shows in Southern California and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In an unusual turn of events in the 1980’s, she was one of the few women to study the art of pin striping under the auspices of the master himself, Kenneth Robert Howard (aka Von Dutch). In addition to her artistic and racing talents, Ruth was also a singer and a writer.
