VANCOUVER CALGARY MONTREAL Nothing inspires like art

CIBC is proud to support the Mayor’s Evening for the Arts and the Toronto Arts Foundation. We celebrate their commitment to artistic excellence and recognize the transformative benefits of the arts in our communities.

The CIBC logo is a trademark of CIBC.

Thank you for joining us to celebrate what has turned out to be an unprecedented year for the arts in our city. It is undeniable that life in Toronto has changed since we last gathered together. The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the way we connect, the way we communicate, and the way we appreciate the arts.

While Toronto has coped with the first and second waves of this virus our artists have stepped up to bring joy to our lives with both digital and outdoor programming. At the same time, it is the artists who have been among the hardest hit by the virus as venues have closed and paid work opportunities have evaporated.

Tonight, we are proud to stand with Mayor to celebrate the strength of Toronto’s arts sector, and unite in our shared commitment to help artists survive this crisis. Together, we’re creating new opportunities for all Torontonians to continue benefiting from the arts in 2021.

With support from many of you tonight, Toronto Arts Foundation has grown Arts in the Parks from an ambitious vision into a city-wide initiative that brings high-quality free arts events to parks throughout the city. Arts in the Parks has brought together thousands of people around the city to experience music, theatre, dance, movies, festivals, community workshops, and so much more in Toronto’s parks. Perhaps most importantly, Arts in the Parks has been able to continue during the pandemic. We hope you will enjoy the opportunity to explore some of the highlights from Arts in the Parks 2020 and we thank you for your contributions to our COVID-19 Response Effort Initiatives.

On behalf of Toronto Arts Foundation, we are delighted to welcome you to the 2020 Mayor’s Evening for the Arts. We are grateful for the leadership of our Fundraising Co-Chairs Kevin Green, Richard Paquet and Mark Cote and the dedication of the Fundraising Committee, all of whom worked tirelessly to make tonight a success. We also want to acknowledge the unwavering support of Mayor John Tory. The funds raised tonight will help build resilience for our arts sector and bring Arts in the Parks 2021 to life, much to the gratitude of many communities across Toronto.

We truly couldn’t do it without you! Our profound thanks for your contributions toward tonight’s fundraising goal.

Yours truly,

Kathleen Sharpe Claire Hopkinson, M.S.M Chair, Director & CEO, Toronto Arts Foundation Toronto Arts Council & Toronto Arts Foundation

The Mayor’s Evening for the Arts 2020 | 3

“I believe that it is fundamentally important for us to renew and renew and renew our commitment to the arts and culture in the city because it’s good for the economy, it’s good for us in terms of hearing our own stories, shown to us in different ways, it’s good for jobs, it’s good for the heart and soul of our country and our city, but most of all, it brings us together in a way that is spectacular.” — Mayor John Tory

Thanks to your support, Arts in the Parks will continue to bring extraordinary arts to neighbourhoods across the city.

The Mayor’s Evening for the Arts 2020 | 9 Noorez Lalani with 2019 Community Arts Award Winner Collette ‘Miss Coco’ Murray. 10 | The Mayor’s Evening for the Arts 2020 WHY YOU GIVE

Active arts philanthropist The Honorable Margaret Norrie McCain CC ONB first donated to Toronto Arts Foundation in 2010. She has increased her engagement with us over the years, most recently at the 2020 Mayor’s Evening for the Arts. “By nurturing and advancing programmes that take the arts into many different communities in our large, cosmopolitan city, Toronto Arts Foundation is improving the quality of life for everyone and helping make Toronto a better place to live. I am proud to support the work carried out by this important organization,” said McCain. Her contributions have helped us continue our Arts in the Parks initiative, which enables people around the city to experience music, theatre, dance, movies, festivals, and so much more in Toronto’s parks for free.

Through their work, Mod Developments Inc. has gained a deep understanding of the importance of arts in communities. “MOD Developments’ mission is to create mindful development that pays homage to our city’s rich cultural heritage,” said Noorez Lalani, President, MOD Developments. In 2019, they enthusiastically became a first-time sponsor of our Community Arts Award, seeing a connection between our work and theirs. Their contribution, renewed in 2020, directly supports award recipients who make significant contributions to Toronto by increasing access to arts and culture in culturally diverse communities.

The Mayor’s Evening for the Arts 2020 | 11 COVID-19 RESPONSE EFFORT INITIATIVES

#TOArtsTogether

Thanks to your support through The Mayor’s Evening for the Arts, funds raised tonight will help artists and arts organizations during the COVID-19 crisis in Toronto. Toronto Arts Foundation is working with civic minded partners, including Toronto Arts Council, to help with mitigation, resilience and recovery during this pandemic. Through one- on-one mentorship, workshops for board members, financial support for artists and arts organizations, and research, our COVID-19 Response Effort Initiatives are helping our beloved arts sector cope and grow in this precarious time.

Mentorship: Our Mentorship Program has been conceived to assist artists and arts workers navigate COVID-19 impacts on their profession. As part of the program artists and arts workers are matched with experienced peer mentors. Mentorships include a range of trainings - working safely in public places, reimagining artistic practice in the digital space, developing entrepreneurial skills, strategic planning for post pandemic, sharing of best practices, accessibility design, developing skills to access additional sources of income, working with different communities within Toronto, and learning to address one’s emotional and psychological needs.

Workshops for board members: Our Creative Champions Network shares critical knowledge and provides strategies on board governance, during the pandemic, to Toronto’s volunteer arts board members. Recordings of our past workshops remain accessible on our website for everyone.

Support for artists: Toronto Arts Foundation and Toronto Arts Council joined forces, with assistance from the City of Toronto, to create the TOArtist COVID-19 Response Fund which provided funding to individual artists who lost work due to the COVID-19 shutdown. Thanks to your support we were able to provide $836,347 to 982 Toronto artists.

“The COVID pandemic has had an overarching impact to all aspects of our lives. The pandemic has caused the cancellation of many concerts, performing arts events and new music releases resulting in many musicians and artists out of work. We felt supporting the TOArtist COVID-19 Response Fund would provide assistance to artists in greatest need in our city.” – Gary Slaight, President & CEO, The Slaight Family Foundation

12 | The Mayor’s Evening for the Arts 2020 Support for organizations: Thanks to a million-dollar contribution from the Hal Jackman Foundation, eighty small and mid-sized charitable arts organizations received unrestricted financial support. We were pleased to help distribute these much needed funds to organizations affected by depleted earned revenue due to COVID-19 closures.

Research: Through our work with Ryerson University and other partners, we’re tracking the impact of the pandemic on the arts to help artists and arts organizations plan for recovery. This includes designing and testing new operational practices for back to house operations in theatres, creating new guidelines for occupational and public health standards, and providing resources for artists on financial relief, mental health, virtual arts entertainment, data collection and accessibility.

“In these challenging times, we are exceptionally grateful for the support of the Hal Jackman Foundation. We are grateful for people like you who recognize that as we emerge from this crisis, that the arts sector will be vital rebuilders of community, collectivity and connectivity. So thank you for your generosity, for believing in the resilience of Nightwood Theatre, and for investing in the future of our company. It is thanks to your support that we can continue to connect, create, and make the world a better place through art and activism. We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you at the theatre again.” – Nightwood Theatre

PAUL BUTLER For over 20 years, the staple in my artistic practice has been The Collage Party - a nomadic, public studio where people come together and make art in a social setting. Collage is the ideal medium to promote the benefits of art with because of its accessibility. One does not have to know ‘how to draw a straight line’ to make a collage. My practice is rooted community, collaboration and artist-run activity. With Joseph Beuys and Marcel Duchamp’s respective beliefs in mind that ‘everyone is an artist’ and that ‘anything can be considered art’, I consider The Collage Party as an artwork and the participants as the medium Website: pbca.ca | Instagram: @the_collage_party
