December-January of the Month: Plimoth Colonie 1620

This was to have been our December Sampler of the Month, to commemorate that on December 21, 1620 the Pilgrims came ashore at Plymouth. After 66 days at sea and several weeks docked in Provincetown Harbor while the passengers explored Cape Cod, Mayflower finally docked in Plymouth on December 18th. On December 21st, the first expedition took the shallop ashore. Today December 21 is known as Forefathers Day.

As Sampler of the Month, purchase a minimum of 2 “parts” of the kit and receive a 15% Sampler of the Month discount.

* This sampler was commissioned by Lamora at Access Commodities. The real story of Plymouth can be found worked into the design. * First, the Mayflower was very late leaving Europe, and then the ship wandered up and down the coast looking for a good place. This meant the actual landing at Plymouth in December 1620 occurred much later than it should have, which is depicted in the design. The Mayflower remained at anchor until shelter could be built to protect the sick and dying on board the ship. * The first native to visit the village was Samoset, who arrived bare-chested. He is portrayed on the sampler. The Pilgrims were so concerned about him, they covered him trying to protect him from the cold. * The little Indian dwelling on the top left is called a Wetu. (Pronounced WeeTwo). This was what the Wampanoag Indians who lived in Massachusetts used as a mild weather shelter. There is a little smoke coming out of the top because they would leave a smoke hole in the construction. . . . * The site of Plymouth had been previously occupied by the Wampanoag Indians, many of whom have already perished from disease brought by fishing and trade vessels from Europe. * Not everyone on the Mayflower was a Pilgrim. Others on board the ship were looking to build a fortune or start a new life in a new place. What makes their story unique is the Mayflower Compact. It was an agreement among people from different backgrounds, different religions, and different countries to put aside their differences to work together as a community to survive. * At the bottom of the sampler on the horizon is Plymouth Rock. The natural shoreline at Plymouth is very rocky, and most historians agree no one knows where they actually disembarked. The color of the clothing portrays the natural dyes that would have been used. The lady is wearing a Coif, because keeping one's head covered also had a practical benefit of keeping you warm. * Finally, the quote by Capt. John Smith of the Virginia Colony resonated with designer Elizabeth, as she feels like Capt. Smith, the Plymouth Community succeeded because they worked together---even though they were not always perfect. * As you stitch this, keep in mind those people, their struggle, and the nature of your life 400 years later. * Elizabeth Creeden, the designer of our historical sampler, “Plimoth Colonie 1620,” is also the designer for the Plimoth Tapestry, an amazing project consisting of 20 panels, with completed panels on display at Pilgrim Hall Museum. You can view the progress of their work on their Facebook page. Several panels have been completed. Commissioned in 2017, the purpose is to tell the story of Plymouth Colony. Photos below are from the Facebook page for The Plymouth Tapestry at Pilgrim Hall Museum. If you’re on Facebook, I know you will enjoy what’s shown there. Or better yet, go to the Museum and see it in person! I would love to do that!

And February, since January is almost a memory!

In-Shop Stitch-Togethers We were asked by two customers, good friends from neighboring Arizona cities, if they could meet at the shop to stitch and visit on a Saturday, and after thinking about it for a bit, we agreed. They did, and it worked very nicely. So if you and one, two, or three others would like to do that as well, please call to register. Please limit it to four of you. Accounting for staff members that will be present, we are still following the Governor’s restrictions on number of people per square foot of retail space. Also, please note that face masks and social distancing are required. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]

I wish that I had a crystal ball … it would make this so much easier. With vaccines now available, my Pollyanna nature had me convinced that all would be well and we could go ahead with our 2021 workshop planning. Unfortunately, a new strain, even more viral than the first one, is now making its way around the world, and I have no idea what will happen. I know that some other needlework events in May and June have been “postponed” until 2022. Maybe they know something I don’t, so I am proceeding very cautiously as far as event planning. Something that I do know is that I don’t ever want to go through the registrations/cancellations/ more registrations/more cancellations circus that was necessary with the 2020 Summer School. We were pleased to welcome the 45 who attended and we all had a wonderful time, but it was so difficult and costly in getting to that point that I will avoid that ever happening again. So stay tuned. I’m sorry, that’s all I can say for now. In the meantime, look inside! Lots of beautiful samplers, new and old. So many samplers, so little time. But so thankful for our needlework!

Life happens, unfortunately, and interferes with schedules, as it did with this newsletter. So when will this SAL begin? As soon as you get your supplies, I would say, you can begin. I prefer very few needlework “rules” and don’t believe in the stitching police … just have fun with this beautiful sampler! Your SAL leader will guide you via Facebook and future newsletters.

When Vickie presented me with a number of sampler choices for our 2021 SAL, I was at an impasse ~ how can I choose from so many wonderful samplers from the incomparable NeedleWorkPress collection? Can we have two or maybe three samplers to choose from? Oh, dear, my indecisiveness once again rears its ugly head! But all of that red! And that amazing red rose … and red house … and red cow and red border flowers! Yes, it had to be this one! Its dedication, “A Present For you my dear Aunt,” can be changed to “Mother” “Father” “Sister” “Brother” “Friend” and several others, charting included. And the phrase “Jesus Wept” also makes it special. That phrase appears on several samplers that have been reproduced, each one very notable. The Scarlet Letter reproduction was our Co-Sampler of the Month for February 2018, and it is very unique as well. The newsletter focusing on that sampler you can read about here. Stitch-Along Leader NeedleWorkPress is honored to work with model-stitcher Terry Niemczura and The Attic is thrilled that this talented needlewoman has agreed to lead our stitch-along for 2021. Terry has been stitching samplers since 1978. Her dad was her framer, and the first two that she stitched and he framed are hanging in her home. For 20 years, Terry was an accountant for a small medical supply distributor. Since retirement four years ago she has stitched 15 to 18 LARGE samplers each year. She and her husband have been married for 40 years and have two daughters, four grandsons and one kitten. She is currently serving as co-vice president of the Western Reserve Sampler Guild in Bath, Ohio. Throughout the pandemic, Terry and her stitching friends have been gathering on Zoom twice a The Attic, Mesa, week AZ toToll-Free: spend the afternoon 1.888.94-ATTIC stitching and chatting. From Robert Harris, the SAL leader for Elizabeth Charlotte Cotton, 1753 – The Attic Needlework 2020 SAL: I put the final stitches in Elizabeth on Sunday evening. In this very strange year, this sampler with her bold and muted colors provided me with peace, joy and a little frustration - all of the over one in the bottom verse was a little tedious. I am now looking forward to getting her framed and hung on my sampler wall. I want to thank Nicola Parkman and Jean Lea for giving me the opportunity this year to lead the stitch-a-long. Your confidence, trust and encouragement makes this journey in needlework more enjoyable. For those of you that completed Elizabeth this year – a hearty congratulations! And for those that are still on the journey with Elizabeth, please keep us posted with your progress pictures and continue to reach out to us for any encouragement that you need. Like anything in life, it is the journey that is the most rewarding.

. . . beginning with Jean Donaldson 1826, $20, 155 x 243, charted with NPI silks in 18 luscious colors, with the model being stitched on Fox & Rabbit Designs’ Hogbristle linen to match the original, with conversions for AVAS and DMC provided. From Kathleen about this sampler and its maker: Young Bonnie Jean stitched this sampler which, although contains no place name, one can indeed be fairly certain of her ethnicity being Scottish due to the revealing typically Scottish large alphabets with scrolling filigree, the various crowns, bright vibrant oranges, pinks, reds and greens, the little dogs, perhaps Scottish terriers, the stylized peacocks and overall layout of this charming, rather primitive sampler. Although Jean followed tradition with her motifs, her sampler was very original in color and choice of stitches, often changing midstream! The overall effect is charming and unique.

JESSIE WATSON c.1816, £13, 133 x 199, a charming sampler in its own right, is presented in its Thread Legend with 11 colors in Soie 100/3, Soie d’Alger, DMC, as well as Fine D’Aubusson Wool (a special order). Nicola’s historical information about the samplermaker is always compelling and often leads me to pondering the life of the samplermaker while re- creating her sampler. But there’s a much more compelling story in this reproduction about an amazing, indomitable spirit and a beautiful. . . friendship. The model stitcher, needlewoman extraordinaire J Lee, known to many of you as Kirby Bentley or Jessie James, suffered a major stroke in 2018. She was found by her friend Lisa, who has played a significant role in J Lee’s return to stitching after being paralyzed on her right side. J Lee had to relearn to stitch one-handed, and Lisa has given her support and encouragement all along the way. There’s more detail about this most inspiring story in the chart in a “Post Script” as well as on the HATS website.

ANN WEBB 1829 $24, a PDF download available from HATS as well as The Attic, is a delightful sampler that has a pair of eye-catching billy goats close to the top. A beautiful palette of silk threads has been chosen to stitch the variety of motifs to almost completely cover the linen, and the verse used is the first of nine Beatitudes: Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Sandra Moffitt of HATS has designed SPRING VIOLETS worked entirely with cross stitch over two threads. While it is designed as a sampler, it is finished as a pin cushion … and exquisitely finished with ribbons and beads. The perfect February project, as violets are the birth flower of February. It is available as an instant PDF download now from the HATS website or from The Attic and other select shops for $11. Its size, 147 x 103, is even sweeter on 53/63 Legacy Sycamore Seedpod, 5.6 x 3.3 or 4.7 x 3.9, depending on how you orient it on the uneven-weave linen. I LOVE this design!

Pam shares with us her New Year’s Eve finish of Moira Blackburn’s “Hope Sampler,” pictured below. You will note that Pam has substituted hummingbirds in place of the butterflies/moths on the original, below. This was our Sampler of the Month in October 2014 (read that newsletter here) ~ and it’s been one of the most popular samplers ever, despite the fact that my model is still in progress … so many samplers, so little time. Like the model I’m still finishing, Pam stitched hers on 52/60 linen with Tudor silks.

It’s always fun to see your adaptations of the charted designs. Here Gail inserted her own verse. VÉÄÉÇ|tÄ j|ÄÄ|tÅáuâÜz @ October 2020

Some of you have asked if we were able to go to Williamsburg … we were! We had an absolutely wonderful time. As you can see, the weather was quite lovely … except it rained on the first day and the last day. John was insistent on renting scooters, and I’m so glad he was. My brothers were very helpful in loading them into the vehicles each day. We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversaries. Jerry and Nancy are a bit ahead of us, but together we have 153 years. It was a grand celebration. As Nicola says, the best part about memories is making them!

This ‘collage’ exemplifies Christmas 2020 … it was my dream that we would all be together … and be decked out in our matching red/black buffalo plaid shirts … but that didn’t happen, so this is the next best thing, a photo-shopped family gathering. Which reminds all of us of a story when we were having a family lunch in Wisconsin on a recent visit and we asked the waitress to take a photograph of us. Well, she had been ‘sparring’ with my husband for the entire lunch, and in setting up the group for the photograph, she suggested that John should be on the outside … in case we wanted to photo-shop him out of the picture.

Almost every year since 2005 The Attic has hosted its Sampler Symposium in January on MLK weekend … and this year Facebook sent me these photos as a memory, and it brought to mind wonderful friends that I miss so much.

Many of you have met Deborah at stitching get-togethers at The Attic in the days BC (before Covid) and have come to love her engaging smile, wonderful spirit, beautiful singing voice, great laugh ~ she always was a bright spot at any gathering. The photo on the right was taken at our October 2017 Halloween Stitch-In, and she came in a very clever “costume” she called “Spice Rack,” an example of her endearing sense of humor. Well, Deborah needs all of our prayers now as she has just begun a six-week treatment of radiation and chemo for rectal cancer, which will be followed by surgery and more treatment. She is writing a daily blog on FaceBook that demonstrates another gift that she has, for writing. Of course, that’s her job… You can follow along with her journey if you wish at deborahchaddockbrown.com ~ most of all, she will appreciate your prayers. That, and her strong faith and indomitable spirit, will see her through this! ❤

Pandemic Mailing Problems One of the many problems we are dealing with in this pandemic is mail delivery. While many businesses, and needlework shops especially, have discontinued shipping internationally, we have continued to do it. It has been our experience that, while some packages have taken months, they I am blessed with such a wonderful family. My brother and his wife Debbie drove to have all eventually been delivered. Arizona, left Wisconsin the day after Christmas, to help. John had been hospitalized for Similar problems domestically as well. 11 days with Covid, and they came out to help take care of us, and do whatever needed We ask for your patience. Once we doing. Mike has such a great smile … who could be that ‘happy’ washing windows?! relinquish control of the package, we Debbie helped me go through cupboards and drawers in the kitchen and discard/donate have no more control, and claims with accumulated stuff that was clogging up my kitchen.
