THEALL NEWTHAT 911 MATTERS. GTS.

The 911 is the identity of the Porsche brand, and as such stands for Porsche Intelligent Performance more than any other model. It unites contradictory values such as tradition with innovation and performance with day-to-day usability. The latter becomes particularly clear with the new 911 Carrera GTS: a sports car for every day use. Born 50 years ago, the term GTS, belonged to the Porsche 904 or Porsche Carrera GTS due to the same naming rights problem that required the renaming of the 911. The 904 took Porsche’s racing reputation to new heights after the little 4-cylinder vehicle took an astounding “first overall” at the Targa Florino. It went on to a third at the Nurburgring and a perfect finish at Le Mans amongst many other successful races. 4 years ago, Porsche resurrected the GTS badge for the previous 997 generation 911. Launched with two seats, adjusted suspension and a sizable power increase, it was rightly well received. Now in 2015 the GTS legend continues with Porsche sending its second generation of the 911 Carrera GTS to the starting line. The question comes from behind us. We turn and greet a seated man dressed like ‘Bear Grylls’. “I haven’t seen one like that since...” He tells us a story of riding in a friend’s 1960’s 911 Targa through the roads surrounding many years ago; a recollection that brings a smile to his face and a distant look to his eyes – a look many TPorsche enthusiasts can relate to. You could almost hear a flat six engine singing in his ears and picture the bobbing nose of that air cooled 911 darting around corners in his memory. With coffee in hand we reflect on the coincidence of his tale and the relevance to today’s drive: a blast on those very roads encompassing Wisemans Ferry. Heading north up the Pacific Motorway (formerly the F3) towards Newcastle, we notice the Targa with the roof on has a distinctly different cabin noise to its solid roofed showroom-brother. The large glass rear windowpane appears to alter the sound from the engine and offers a different perspective from that of the hardtop coupe. A brisk 36kms later and the Peats Ridge turn-off is upon us; we take it and fire the red Targa down the tree-lined asphalt strip until we veer left onto George Downs Road towards Central Mangrove/Wisemans Ferry.

At Porsche, design has always been about much Webb’s more than good looks. Porsche design has always had Creek Ferry a function, so with the touch of a button Porsche’s M1 engineering prowess is on show as the Ferry makes its way across the river. The transformation is energetic and ends by revealing an open-top sports car with the Gosford feel and comfort of a 911 Coupé. Disembarking, we continue past the car park and notice a very early model Ford chugging towards the Ferry Café: a favourite refreshment stop for both two and four wheeled drivers in the area. Heading up the hill we turn right onto River Road at the Police Station and board the Webb’s Creek Ferry heading to the west Brooklyn bank of the Hawkesbury River. The pace of our drive quickens as we continue Berowra Heights straight onto St Albans Road. Over the next 20kms Berowra this region offers a collection of smile inducing corners, Waters Ferry curves, dips and crests; placing the 911 Targa 4S right in its element.

20 - PORSCHEWILLOUGHBY.COM.AU FASHIONS ON THE FIELD WITH PCW Melbourne cup stops a nation but only enlivens the Porsche spirit. Last year, in partnership with Jo Malone London, Thomas Sabo, Bose and Plumbago Florists, PCW held an exclusive Melbourne Cup Ladies event. The day was themed: Fashions on the Field, looking back at the event since it first began in 1962. Each decade since was represented with a pop of colour on a Porsche of that period, enclosing the function. The owners of the Porsche’s on display John Carlton, Steve Dammerer and Jason Moxon were pleased to showcase their vehicles which included an immaculate 1950’s 356 Speedster, a 60’s 911 Carrera, a 70’s 911 Targa and an 80’s 911SC. The local press came quickly when they got word of the bright vintage models, taking space in what is otherwise a very monochromatic, albeit modern landscape.

Ladies, this year promises to be another amazing day, however numbers are limited so please express your interest in advance to Alexandra Bromley on 02 89 666 986 or [email protected] if you wish to join us.

On Friday 5th December, PCW employees completed the first PCW HILL CLIMB CHALLENGE Consisting of an individual running race, participants started at the base of the workshop ramp running up all three levels to finish in our rooftop car park. After a few thrills and spills we had our winner, but what a close race it was! Our New Porsche Sales Manager, Ben Drew opted for a more streamlined look in his wife’s pink singlet top, which clearly helped him in the win with a time of 20.01 seconds.
