It has been another busy week across the school with several classes involved in and out of school activities or experiences with visitors. Term 4 Last Day, 18 Dec - 12pm Pool and Swimming Our students are also enjoying the first week of swimming with the pool opening Term holiday this week. An email will be sent out as soon as swipe cards are available. We had hoped that this would be from next week but we are awaiting a swipe card reader 18 Dec - 8 Feb to replace our current one which has malfunctioned and is being replaced. We hope to have these glitches out of the way at this end of the year to enjoy an Term 1 2021 Commences uninterrupted season. The cards will continue to be $80 + $20 bond for school Tue, 9 Feb families and $100 + $20 bond for non-school users. Delays in opening have been due to hold-ups with availability of the replacement filtration system. This is now installed and the pool is functioning well. Here’s hoping for a fine summer to maximise its use!

2021 Class placements are nearly finalised for next year. Thank you for placement requests which were received before the cut-off of last week. Stationery lists and any necessary information for 2021 will be given out in the final week of term along with your child’s end of year report.

End of Year Reports The end of year reports will be the same format as we used for the end of 2020. This will show what your child can do as evidence of new learning (progress) and what their identified next steps are. We also report against how well they have demonstrated the WAKA values this year. The comments section provides teacher voice and student voice which gives an overall summary of how your child has presented in the school environment.

Farewells We will see off 32 Y8s at the end of this year. At a time where some feel like they are ready for High School and we may at times feel like we are ready for them to go to Lily A, Neve A, Ava G, Theo H, Alex L, Tobin V-BM High School as well, I will actually miss all our seniors. For many, it is the end of and Carolina S, at the Nelson Bandquest. The eight years at School. It will also be the end of some families' association with Riwaka School. I am grateful for what all those whanau who have supported group gained third place and Tobin was awarded the school in different ways have done over the years. There will be a final the Regional Award for best rock styles! acknowledgement of staff and Y8 leavers in the final newsletter. We will also have several families moving out of the area. If you also know of any in-zone potential enrolments, please advise them to pop in to the school office as soon as possible to catch up with us on this.

Professional Development in 2021 Our key areas as a staff are; DMIC- a mathematics focus on problem solving approaches, PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) in which we are now at the Tier 2 level of training along with High School, Parklands School and School and also, continued work into integrating some structured literacy practices into junior and senior literacy.

There will be one final newsletter for the term in the last week of Term.

Volleyball We have 2 teams in the weekly Volleyball draw and both teams are playing really well and growing in skill and confidence. A group of Year 7-8 students headed to Saxton stadium on 8 November for an all-day tournament with 17 other schools. Our Riwaka Rebels came second in their division - well done! Additionally, Grace D. received a Star Player award for her games. A special thank you to Becky Johns for all her support of the teams.

The team: Theo H, Luan R, Jorja B, Grace Quick Rip D, Isla M, Izmae K, Amelia B and Jayde J On 11 November two Riwaka teams entered the girls Y7-8 Quick Rip tournament at Jubilee Park. We were allowed to enter a few of our Y6 girls to ensure we had full teams - both teams were excellently managed by our parent support: Amanda Richards and Shelley Peychers. Both teams played well and the girls enjoyed the day.

8- 10 Year old Athletics: Lower Moutere Students from five classes attended the inter school athletics at Lower Moutere on 17 November where they rotated through athletic events with their age group. Riwaka had some excellent results: The A relay team came third and the B relay team came first. Vianca P. came first across the district for 10 year old girls and also won the most points for the day across all the age groups. Riria G.-W. came first for 9 year old girls and Ben H. came second for the 8 year old boys. All the students participated and gave their best effort on the day - well done! Junior Athletics - A huge thank you to everyone who was able to come and support the junior school students as they displayed their athletic skills. We are very proud of how well students managed themselves, gave everything a go and supported each other. A big thank you to Michelle White for leading the training and her help with the event.

RbL focus (Relationships based learning)

Relationships Based Learning is all about creating a family-like atmosphere in our classrooms; where children feel safe, happy, valued and heard. Following on from last week's techniques, the third one I will explain is…Co-Constructing. This is a process where teachers and students work out a criteria for learning together. By co-constructing the activity and the learning intentions together, this gives students ownership over what they are learning and understanding of what is needed for success.
