PRESIDENT, DR. DONALD DOWLESS

Dr. Donald V. Dowless became Shorter University’s 19th president effective June 1, 2011. “Dr. Donald Dowless has strong credentials in the areas of Christian commitment, higher education administration, fundraising, and ministry,” said Shorter University Trustee Chairman Dr. Nelson Price in announcing his appointment. “The integration of faith and learning is the foundation of his accomplishments as he has risen through the academic ranks,” Dr. Price added. “He knows academia inside and out, and what is most impressive about Dr. Dowless is his love for the Lord and his desire to honor Him with all his heart, soul, and mind. His passion for seeing students grow strong in the Christian faith and for knowing their academic disciplines is evident. “We are grateful for the progress Shorter University made under Dr. Newman’s leadership, and we are sure to keep the momentum of success under our new leader, Dr. Donald Dowless.” Dr. Dowless came to Shorter from North , where he served for five years as vice president for academics. Having earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree from in 1989, Dr. Dowless began his academic career as an assistant professor of religion at Charleston Southern University. He rose through the ranks by becoming chair of the Department of Religion, then dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and then associate provost. At both North Greenville and Charleston Southern, Dr. Dowless served on SACS Reaffirmation of Accreditation leadership teams and helped lead the two institutions through successful 10-year reaffirmation processes. He also helped acquire the largest single scholarship endowment at Charleston Southern, approximately $500,000 from Charleston Heights Baptist Church. Throughout his career, Dr. Dowless has supported athletic programs as avenues for education and ministry. Dr. Dowless holds the Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In December 2009, he earned the Certificate in Non-Profit Management from Duke University with an emphasis in fundraising and marketing. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS, BILL PETERSON

Bill Peterson enters his fifth year as Shorter University’s Director of Athletics. Since being named Director of Athletics in 2007, Peterson has guided Shorter’s athletic department into unprecedented levels of success. His decision-making and expertise have propelled Shorter to record finishes in the NACDA-Learfield Director’s Cup in each of the last four years, including a program-best third place finish following the 2010-2011 academic year. Peterson was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year in 2010 and is currently spearheading Shorter’s exciting transition to NCAA Division II. Since 2007-2008, Shorter has won five national championships and 19 conference championships. Last year, Shorter won the NAIA Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field national championships -- the first two NAIA national championships in school history -- while the competitive cheerleading program completed a three-peat at the NCA Cheerleading National Championships in April. In Peterson’s tenure, Shorter has had 263 All-Conference honorees and 128 student-athletes honored as All-Americans. While the athletic achievements are numerous, the academic accomplishments and track record of community involvement of Shorter’s student-athletes clearly embodies his vision of excellence. Shorter’s number of NAIA Scholar-Athletes has grown from five in 2007-2008 to a record 28 in 2010-2011. Overall, 71 Shorter student-athletes have earned the title of NAIA Scholar-Athlete over the past four years while a total of 345 have been named to their respective Conference All-Academic teams. Shorter has boasted the Southern States Athletic Conference’s Female Honor Student-Athlete in each of the past three years -- NAIA to host the Football National Championship through 2015. 2012 OUTLOOK

By Jim O’Hara

THE SEASON RANKS as one of the best ever for a Shorter University baseball team, but although they reeled off 40 wins in 2011 – the most for the program in three decades – it was the “must-win” game that eluded them that has left the Hawks unfulfilled as a new season begins. “It’s definitely carried over,” Shorter head coach Matt Larry said about how last year ended when the Hawks, who opened the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament by knocking off a pair of NAIA Top 25 teams in Auburn-Montgomery and Southern Poly, fell to William Carey in a late-inning semifinal loss with a national tournament berth on the line. “Mentally, they still feel like they’re in the tournament and they still feel like they have a chip on their shoulder,” Larry added. “They feel like they have something to prove.” The Hawks proved last year that they had better be taken seriously. Despite being without some key components from last year’s roster, the Hawks have reloaded, and combine a foundation of returning veterans with a group of newcomers that includes 11 transfers who Larry knows are eager to keep the program moving upward. “They’re proud of what the team did last year and want to add to it,” Larry said. The Hawks are geared up to improve upon their 40-18 record a year ago with more solid offense and a commitment to reducing mistakes in the field. “The mistakes we made in most of those losses were mental and are easily corrected,” said Larry. “We know we can’t make mistakes, but these guys showed last year that if something bad happened in the field, they got past it with their offense.” Last season, the Hawks emerged as one of the best hitting and scoring teams in the SSAC as they compiled a .315 batting average and put nearly seven runs on the scoreboard each time out. Senior hurler Stephen Adkins headlines what will be a young “There were some great numbers put up last year and I feel Shorter pitching staff in 2012. Adkins has all the tools to serve as we can do the same this season and even surpass it,” Larry said, Shorter’s ace as he posted 64 strikeouts in 60 innings last year. noting the return of two of the team’s offensive producers in junior Willie Lewis, who led the team with a .356 average, and senior shortstop Dadynoel Lorenzo, who paced the Hawks in hits. “Plus, PITCHERS we’ve got more top to bottom threats in the lineup.” Senior Stephen Adkins of Tampa, Fla., returns as the ace of Shorter will have to count on some new arms on the mound Shorter’s restructured staff and is one of handful of returnees thanks to the departure of nearly its entire staff from a year ago in the rotation. Last year, the right-hander pitched in 15 games, – one that ended the season ranked No. 7 nationally with 434 posted a 3-5 record with a 5.40 ERA and recorded 64 strikeouts in strikeouts and was ranked in the top 20 in ERA (3.45) and opposing 60 innings. batting average (.247). 8 SHORTER UNIVERSITY HAWKS year, all join Shorter’s roster with plenty of potential to provide an immediate impact. The transfer pipeline to Shorter has also produced a pair of relievers who have experience: senior Bud Fuller of Plains and junior Ryan Newell of Marietta. Fuller previously pitched for Valdosta State for a year and Georgia Southwestern for two seasons, while Newell comes to Shorter after starting his career at South Carolina-Upstate where he was named to the Atlantic-Sun Conference All-Academic team. More optimism abounds for the Hawks thanks to the return of senior Matt Kirksey, a Rome native that is looking to cap a career that started out on a promising note. Kirksey was 3-1 with a 1.46 ERA in five games before shutting it down due to injury, and spent his first two seasons with the Hawks as a key closer. Two freshmen may enter the pitching picture: Austin Penson of Silver Creek and Josh Mullis of Elko.

INFIELD The Hawks return three of four infielders to provide a young pitching staff with some sure-handed, veteran backup in the field. Senior Kurtis Robinson of Norcross is back to assume his spot at second base, where the switch-hitter turned in a solid campaign in 2011 hitting .303 with 32 RBI and 45 runs scored. At shortstop, Lorenzo gives the Hawks a proven veteran as the native of Tucker comes off a season in which he batted .305 and led Shorter with 65 hits. Lorenzo pushed runs across with 30 RBI and 41 runs while Seniors Dadynoel Lorenzo (above) and Kurtis Robinson (below) showing a bit of power with two homers and plenty of speed on give Shorter two playmakers in the infield that also have plenty of the bases with 17 steals. pop at the plate. Senior Blake McCullers of Loganville, who can play multiple roles for Shorter, rounds out Shorter’s returning infielders, after hitting .283 and finishing second on the team with 43 RBI in 2011. Junior transfer Antonio Walcott of Brooklyn, N.Y., who played at Florida State College at Jacksonville where he hit .396 and stole 23 stolen bases, will see playing time at second base and senior transfer Bobby Triglia of Jacksonville, Fla., who played at Valdosta State, will back up McCullers at the hot corner after hitting .308 and hitting eight homers to lead Valdosta last season. Expected to step in and handle the chores at first base is junior transfer Hunter Smith of Crystal River, Fla. The 6-foot-5 Smith turned in two solid seasons at the College of Central Florida, but saw limited action after signing to play at Troy State last year Junior Mike Miranda of Miami, who redshirted last year, gives Shorter depth at first and can also move over to third base if needed.

OUTFIELD In a search for someone to anchor the outfield, the Hawks need to look no further than Lewis, who was rock solid for Shorter last year. In 2011, the Gainesville, Fla., product led the team with a .356 average, collected six triples and drove in 23 runs. A pair of junior transfers figure to add plenty of speed to Shorter’s lineup in left field: Kendall Lacey of Wetumpka, Ala., and Cal Hardie of Bremen. The 6-5 Lacey comes to Shorter from

Shorter is in good hands defensively with the return of Jordan Hollis (left) behind the plate and Willie Lewis (right) in center. In his first season with the Hawks in 2011, Hollis was a sure-gloved, SSAC All-East Division selection as a backstop. Lewis, who also transferred to Shorter in 2011, provided plenty of speed in the outfield and led the Hawks in batting average from the No. 9 hole.

HEAD COACH, MATT LARRY

Larry earned All-Conference and All-District honors as a senior catcher following the 1992 campaign. As an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Shorter following his playing career, Larry was the architect behind Shorter’s 1998 and 2003 Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC) championship teams and in 2004, Larry successfully launched Shorter’s first-ever junior varsity program. Larry took over as head coach of the Shorter baseball program in 2004, and in 2006, Larry was awarded the Georgia Dugout Club Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Hawks to a 34-23 overall record. Each year, Larry gives countless young men the opportunity to excel both as athletes on the baseball diamond and in the classroom as students dedicated to earning a college degree. The Shorter baseball program’s community involvement is well documented with the Hawks hosting a number of charitable events during home games including Military Appreciation Day, Mal’s Pals Day and the always popular “Striking Out Breast Cancer” event. LARRY’S LEDGER... Former Shorter baseball standout Matt Larry has made an even greater impact as a coach in Shorter’s baseball program. All told, Larry has spent 17 years in the dugout in some coaching capacity with the Hawks -- the last eight coming as head coach. Larry’s teams are not only known for their grit and determination on the diamond, but also their generosity and success off it. Under Larry, Shorter’s baseball program has enjoyed a near 100 percent graduation rate and team grade point average of 3.25 or better. The Hawks were honored in 2010 as the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Champions of Character Team Award winner for all NAIA baseball programs. To top it off, the Hawks won 40 games in 2011 for the first time in 30 years.

2012 MEET THE TEAM DINNER

Bobby Cox addresses Baseball Hawks during 2012 Meet the Team

January 7, 2012

A very special guest joined the Shorter University baseball team as it hosted the 5th Annual Meet the Team Dinner on January 7, 2012 at the Darlington School in Rome. Future Major League Baseball Hall of Famer and longtime Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox served as the evening’s keynote speaker and was an instant hit with the over 450 people in attendance. Cox spent nearly an hour signing autographs and taking pictures before delivering his keynote address, then spent several more minutes at the end of the evening entertaining anyone who wanted a final chance to speak with him. In many ways, the night was a symbol of the journey taken by the Shorter baseball program over the past few years. Alumni support is as strong as ever thanks to a dedicated alumni association led by former Hawk baseball standout Todd Wofford, who spoke at the dinner on what Shorter Baseball has meant to him. The event drew record attendance and the presence of Cox only demonstrated the fact that Shorter Baseball is unquestionably on the map. All told, the 5th Annual Meet the Team Dinner raised significant funds for the program while providing attendees with a chance to participate in a silent and live auction, enjoy a fantastic Legendary Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox (above) addressed steak dinner on behalf of Aramark and get a first look at a Shorter a large crowd of over 450 (below) at the Shorter Baseball 5th baseball team coming off its first 40-win season in three decades. BATTING CAGE CAMPAIGN

In the Fall of 2010, the Shorter Hawks Alumni Baseball Association and Association President, Todd Wofford, launched the Baseball Batting Cage Campaign in order to help raise money for a batting cage facility adequate for a team roster of 60+ players. Because the previous batting cage, which had limited room available to house only a few players at a time, was completely destroyed during the tornados that swept through Rome and Floyd County in April 2011, the Baseball Alumni Association teamed up to help plan a future batting facility. This plan aimed to assist the baseball program by developing a more efficient batting cage and to give them a more suitable place to practice during periods of inclement weather. Thanks to donations already received, the baseball program hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new cage on November 22, 2011 to celebrate the beginning of what still is an ongoing process. At the present time, the baseball program uses resources outside the University to practice during times of bad weather. The new proposed facility will give the Hawks a place to hit, throw, and work on various defensive drills without having to venture off campus. Several opportunities to give are available through Baseball Golf Tournaments and other alumni functions, such as the Fall Alumni Game and various other game day events. Those who are interested in donating to the Batting Cage Campaign or those who would like more information about how to contribute, please contact Shorter University head baseball coach Matt Larry at [email protected] or Shorter Hawks Alumni Baseball Association President Todd Wofford at [email protected].

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Shorter University baseball program prides itself on having its players become what the coaching staff refers to as a “complete person.” A complete person is one who is trustworthy, respectful, responsible, honest and truthful, not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom and in the community. The Shorter coaching staff has made it a goal to guide its student-athletes to demonstrate these traits that are exhibited in the five core character values of the NAIA’s Champions of Character program and feel it is evident in the team’s relentless efforts to give back to the community and its school through servant leadership. Shorter’s baseball team has a reputation for being accountable in the classroom, on campus and in the public eye. In 2010 and 2011, the baseball team logged more service hours and made more community appearances than any other team in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Once again this year, the Shorter baseball team will contribute an enormous amount of volunteer hours to various community organizations through local school involvements, free clinics, game day benefits and by partnering with other organizations to raise awareness in the community.

Local School Involvement Every year, the team takes time to read books to elementary students in the community where the children get the opportunity to meet the baseball players and Harold the Hawk. On one such occasion, players, coaches, and Harold the Hawk made a visit to Midway Primary School for their annual BEE Celebration, Midway’s positive incentive program designed to recognize students for appropriate school behavior. As part of the program, student expectations are defined, consistent, and posted throughout the school; appropriate student behavior is taught; positive behaviors are publicly recognized and rewarded; and problem behaviors have clear consequences that are implemented consistently by staff and administration. MPS designed the Five Bees to define what is expected of all students. The expectations include Bee Respectful, Bee Safe, Bee Positive, Bee Ready, and Bee Neat. Players and coaches assisted in this fun day on the playground while Harold the Hawk mingled with the children. This is a fun and exciting event for everyone, especially for the children who get the chance to meet potential role models while giving the team a chance to give back to the community.

Reach Out and Read Program Reach Out and Read’s® objective is to prepare America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups by advising parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving developmentally-appropriate books to children. The program begins at the 6-month checkup and continues through age 5, with a special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities. Families served by Reach Out and Read read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills, better prepared to achieve their potential. Harbin Pediactrics and Dr. Melissa Davis, along with the Hawks’ baseball and volleyball teams, joined together this year to promote this nationally known program. Players from both programs volunteered their time to sit with children, beginning at 6 months of age, in the Harbin Clinic Pediatric waiting room to promote the importance of reading to parents and children. This not for profit organization has been a true blessing for many children of Rome and the Hawks hope to continue their partnership with Dr. Davis and Harbin Pediatrics in years to come.

Liver Strong In March 2008, good friend and Shorter graduate Mark Whitaker was diagnosed with End Stage Liver Disease and is currently fourth on a liver donor list. Mark was the voice of the Shorter Hawk Baseball team from 1990-94 and is a long time supporter of Shorter University and its athletics program. Since his diagnosis, the Shorter Baseball program has been supporting him, his wife Dana, and his two children, Taylor (15) and Bryce (12), by purchasing “Liver Strong” bracelets that benefit a matched fund for Mark; used specifically for post- transplant expenses. The team will sell Liver Strong wristbands and shirts during all home spring games.

Military Appreciation Day Every year since 2010, in conjunction with the United States Army National Guard, the Shorter University baseball program has hosted Military Appreciation Day at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex. The event provides an opportunity for the Rome and surrounding communities to show their support for all of the men and women who so graciously sacrifice their own lives for our freedom. The Hawks wear camouflage uniforms that are auctioned off at the end of the day’s doubleheader to benefit the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation.

Shorter Baseball and Mal’s Pals, Inc. Every spring, the Shorter Baseball Hawks pitch in to support support former Shorter baseball player, 1994 alumnus and Shorter University Director of Admissions Patrick McElhaney and his family, in an effort to raise money for his two daughters who have been diagnosed with a rare and incurable mitochondrial disease called Leigh’s Disease. Every 30 minutes, a child is born who will develop a mitochondrial disease by age 10, and as of now, there are no known cures for mitochondrial disease. Due to the devastating effects of mitochondrial disease on key body parts such as the brain, muscles, heart, and lungs, many children will not survive their teenage years. The McElhaney’s are inspired by your love and friendship, by your concern and support, and by your participation in helping them raise money to continue funding very necessary research that takes them one step closer to a cure for Mitochondrial Disease. This year, the Hawks will again host the Annual Mito Awareness and Mal’s Pals Day. The Hawks will wear green hats for Mal’s Pals, Inc., and will purchase green sweatbands for their opponent and the umpires to show their support. Please show your support on this memorable day by attending the event and purchasing Mal’s Pals merchandise on sale in the concession stand to help raise money for the McElhaney family and mitochondrial disease research.

Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer Event Shorter Baseball will once again host its annual Striking Out Breast Cancer event during a select doubleheader in 2012. This year’s 4th Annual “Striking Out Breast Cancer” game will see Shorter University Baseball join forces with The Breast Center at Floyd Medical in a not-for-profit fundraiser to support breast cancer awareness and breast cancer victims. Over the past three seasons, the Hawks were able to team up with Zeta Tau Alpha sorority to raise over $10,000 for the Breast Center and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. This year, in conjunction with the event, the Shorter baseball players will wear commemorative pink Shorter Baseball hats and will donate pink sweatbands to the opposing players and umpires to help show their support. “Striking Out Breast Cancer” t-shirts and pink Shorter Baseball hats will be on sale to help raise money for The Breast Center at Floyd Medical and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Hawks Baseball Kids Club In its sixth year of existence, the Hawks Baseball Kids Club offers an opportunity for youngsters to be a part of the Shorter Baseball family. Kids 13-years-old or younger can join the Hawks Kids Club. Hawks Kids was developed for the sole purpose of letting kids in the community come out and meet the baseball players, as well as Harry the Hawk. Benefits include an authentic Baseball Kid’s Club t-shirt, free entrance to all Shorter Hawk Athletic events, and game day opportunities to be captain for the day. Game day captains will assist the coaches and players during pre-game practice and act as team captain during the umpires meeting at the plate.

Shorter Hawks Baseball Camps Each summer, the Shorter Hawks hold baseball camps for kids 5-13-years-old stressing the importance of fundaments in baseball. Because of Shorter Baseball’s drive to help in the community, the camps donate over $600 of free summer baseball camps to various organizations and schools.

2011 REVIEW

June 16, 2011

By Matt Green and Jim O’Hara

IN A YEAR when their conference was arguably the best in the nation, the Shorter University Baseball Hawks pieced together its best season in a long time. While the Hawks’ 40-win season – their first in 30 years – put them back as a legitimate threat in the Southern States Athletic Conference, the overall strength of the SSAC left Shorter just shy of being one of seven conference teams in the NAIA Baseball National Championship. As far as head coach Matt Larry is concerned, the Hawks were champions in their own right. “It was a great season, one long in waiting,” Larry said as he looked back over the season that produced a rock solid 40-18 record that stands as the second best in the program’s history. “I hate the way it ended, but I’m happy.” Although the year didn’t end the way they would have liked, the Hawks made their case as a contender in the SSAC by becoming giant-killers in the conference tournament right out of the gate, stunning then No. 6-ranked Auburn-Montgomery in the tourney opener. After a loss to eventual SSAC champ Belhaven, the Hawks stayed alive by knocking off No. 18 Southern Poly to set up a showdown against William Carey, who like the Hawks were considered on the bubble to gain a national at-large berth. But Shorter’s bubble burst in the showdown as a two-out grand slam late in the game erased the Hawks’ lead and hopes. “We were right there. We were just one out away,” said Larry. William Carey wound up becoming the seventh SSAC member to advance to the national playing field, joining AUM, Southern Poly, Falkner, Lee, Brewton-Parker and Belhaven. Faulkner and Lee went on to win their opening round pool series and advance to the 10-team NAIA World Series, with Lee’s Flames advancing to the semifinals of the national event two weeks ago. “I think the SSAC showed just how strong a baseball conference it is,” Larry said, “and I know we were part of that too.” Larry is quick to point out that Shorter’s move into the upper echelon of the SSAC can be traced back to the dedication of the players themselves and to the Hawks’ coaching staff, especially Brick Carter was sensational in his senior campaign with the Hawks assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Lee Bryant in 2011. Carter went 6-3 with a 3.34 ERA while striking out 91 “He did a great job bringing kids in,” Larry said of Bryant. “We batters in 86.1 innings of work. The leadership was rooted in the contributions of 13 seniors on the Hawks’ roster, the majority who helped establish the program’s foundation for the past four years. Not to be overlooked was the ability of the Hawks to excel off “I felt that one through nine [in the lineup] could hit the ball.” the field in the classroom as 10 players were SSAC All-Academic Depth in the batting order was made even more deadly thanks selections – Broome and Johnson; juniors Beau Dahlke, Matt to the depth the Hawks had on the mound. Senior Tim Day completed Shorter’s 1-2 starting pitching punch. The Aussie was a perfect compliment to the hard-throwing Brick Carter, using his looping curve to keep opposing hitters off balance. Day finished the year with a 3.72 ERA while tossing a team-high 87 innings. He went 13-8 in his two years with the Hawks and finished with 127 strikeouts.
