Charities to benefit from Loughton Festival

9.57am - 28th February 2013

TWO local charities - Chigwell Disabled Group and Chigwell Riding Trust - will benefit from the eight-week Loughton Festival. The programme includes music, talks, an art show, classes and performances. Full details can be found on flyers available from Loughton Library and online at www.loughtonfestival.org . Events are being held in Loughton and Chigwell. The festival begins on Friday, March 8 (11am-3pm) with a 'Come and Make a Card' Craft Day at Loughton Methodist Church, High Road. The event is being organised by the Chigwell Disabled Group which hopes local residents will drop in, make a Mother's Day card and learn more about the valuable work the small charity does in supporting people with disabilities. Festival director Sue Taylor said: "The Chigwell Disabled Group is such a deserving charity. It is entirely run by volunteers and we want to help them by advertising the valuable work they do, and by providing them with some much needed financial support." The Festival's main fundraising event for the Chigwell Disabled Group is a musical evening at the Loughton Club, 8 Station Road, Loughton, on Saturday, March 9 (8pm). The club is sponsoring the event, as are all of the performers. Top of the bill will be the Chris Neill Trio with singer Ellie Bignall, who are well known on the jazz circuit. The programme also includes singers Sophie Hess and Paul Jefferies and the Loughton Academy of Music's Famous Five, five young pianists, the youngest being only seven.

01/04/2013 Everything Epping Forest Page 3 of 28

The bar will be open. Sue said: "This is always a relaxed way to start the festival. You don't need to dress up and older children are very welcome. I am very much looking forward to the evening." Doors open at 7.30pm. The programme starts at 8pm. Admission is by £5 donation to the Chigwell Disabled Group which will receive all the proceeds from the event and raffle. Donations of prizes are invited. Sue said: "We can only raise money for our two charities if people come out and support our events, and our fundraising." The Festival is organised by Sue Taylor and other organisations including the Epping Art Society, LADS, and National Jazz Archive. Loughton-based accountants Haslers supply their flyers and Loughton Town Council has offered a grant of £1,000 towards the costs of the events. All remaining costs must be raised by selling tickets. Sue has worked hard to keep costs down and as low as she can, and has managed to ensure some events continue to be free of charge.

Police linking five bogus police officer incidents

2.42pm - 27th February 2013

DETECTIVES are now linking five cases in less than a month where telephone callers have posed as police to trick, or attempt to trick, elderly victims into revealing their bank details. In the latest incident, reported on Sunday, a Buckhurst Hill couple had a three figure sum of cash fraudulently removed from their bank accounts and were also tricked into handing over a gold watch. The couple, who are in their 80s, were called by a man posing as a Metropolitan Police officer based at Limehouse. He claimed the couple's bank account had been infiltrated and he needed their bank details to check. He said two officers would call at their home to collect the cards. The two men who arrived took the cards and also tricked the couple into handing over the watch claiming it could be used as part of the investigation. In a similar incident, on February 16, a couple in Chigwell were called by a man claiming also to be an officer based at Limehouse Police Station who said their bank cards had

01/04/2013 Everything Epping Forest Page 4 of 28

been used fraudulently. He asked the couple to give details but they refused and called . The theft and attempted incident are believed to be connected to similar incidents at Chigwell, where a courier also arrived to collect cards which were used fraudulently, and at Willingale where a victim gave bank account details over the phone to a fake police officer. A fifth person in west Essex received a similar call but hung up immediately. Sgt Russell Welch said: "This appalling fraud against elderly and vulnerable people is also happening within the Met Police area and is clearly spreading into Essex. "It is absolutely vital that any calls about bank details by people claiming to police officers are treated with utmost caution. "Victims should refuse to give any details and call Essex Police on 999 immediately. "Genuine police officers will never ask for bank details over the telephone. "It is possible that one man or a group of criminals working together is using different names and different stories to trick the elderly or vulnerable. "One simple rule will prevent you from falling for this kind of con and that is to never give bank details to anyone who has called you. "The same is true of people who knock at your door. If an individual is legitimate, they should not mind your asking for them to prove who they are." Anyone who is contacted by a caller claiming to be police investigating a bank card fraud should contact police on 999. Anyone with information about suspicious callers claiming to be police should call detectives at Loughton CID, also on 101.

Parish council sets 2013 -14 budget 1.05pm - 27th February 2013

BUCKHURST Hill Parish Council has frozen its share of council tax bills for the next financial year. Councillors approved a slightly reduced precept of £343,089 - which means Band D householders in the parish will be paying £68.90 - 37p less than in 2012-13 - to the parish council in the next financial year. The parish council is looking at the possibility of moving its offices from the information centre in Queens Road to Buckhurst Hill Library. Parish council chairman Gavin Chambers said: "I am keen to get the finances sorted out and this year we were able to start to make a small reduction and hope to build on that further.” He added: "The parish council is delighted that we have been able to slightly reduce the council's share of council tax bills for the next financial year while at the same time ensuring we can continue to provide our valued services. We are continuing to work with Essex County Council over a planned move of the council's offices to Buckhurst Hill Library. "This will bring savings to the council and will ensure longer opening hours at the library."

Chamber of Commerce welcomes car park review promise 8.08am - 27th February 2013

EPPING Forest Chamber of Commerce has welcomed a promise from Epping Forest District Council that it will review the parking situation in Epping. Finding a space in the town's two pay-and-display car parks has become a nightmare after the cost to park all day in the NCP-operated car park at Epping Station was increased to £6. Now instead of parking at the station it is being claimed that commuters are parking in the Bakers Lane and Cottis Lane car parks where they can park all day for £2.80. Epping Forest District Council safer, greener and highways portfolio holder Gary Waller told the last full council meeting a review would be undertaken as the council wanted to assist traders and residents. Epping mayor and district councillor Jon Whitehouse, who raised the issue, suggested an extended stay tariff for people wanting to park for nine to ten hours or reverting to the short-stay parking arrangement were possible solutions. Epping Forest Chamber of Commerce chairman John Price said: "The news that the council is to look into the situation is to be welcomed because something needs to be done as soon as possible. "Traders are having a difficult enough time as it is but if their potential customers cannot find anywhere to park then they are obviously going to go elsewhere to spend their money. "We want our high streets to be vibrant places not ghost towns filled with the cars of people who simply park there all day so they can travel by train to work."

Vic Knope, chairman of the Friends of the Copped Hall Trust, said: "It was a great night. “We had a packed audience straining to answer questions that baffled and taunted our memory. “Our quizmaster, Jeremy Walling, deliberately threw all sorts of red herrings at us and made us scour the nooks and crannies of our brains to unearth information that we'd thought we'd lost forever!"

Charity founder at West End premiere 5.44pm - 24th February 2013

THE founder of The Dream Factory charity, Avril Mills, met a host of stars at the film premiere of Run for Your Wife - a screen version of the hit theatre farce by Epping playwright Ray Cooney. ‘Allo ‘Allo star Vicki Michelle MBE, who is a patron of The Dream Factory charity, is associate producer of the film which stars Denise van Outen, Danny Dyer, Sarah Harding and Neil Morrissey and Vicki’s daughter Louise Fowler. Avril was among the audience at the red carpet screening at the Odeon Leicester Square on February 5. Among the guests was West End musical star Lee Mead – who is married to Denise van Outen - who took the lead role of Joseph in the West End musical Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat after winning the BBC programme ‘Any Dream Will Do’. Avril said: “It was an amazing experience - and thanks to meeting Lee The Dream Factory has just made its 184th dream come true. “We had been contacted by Piers Bloomfield’s mum who said her son wanted to meet Lee. When I met Lee I gave him my business card and told him about Piers’ dream and a week later his agent contacted me. ” Avril added: “It was only through that chance meeting with Lee that the dream came to fruition. “Our thanks go to Vicki and all the other stars who give their time to help us make our dreams come true. “Without their support, and the hard work of our ‘dream makers’ and supporters none of our work for children and young adults with life -limiting conditions would be possible."

Piers meets West End star Lee Mead 5.05pm - 24th February 2013

THE Dream Factory charity has fulfilled yet another dream by arranging for Epping youngster Piers Bloomfield to meet West End musical star Lee Mead. Lee shot to stardom when he won the BBC programme ‘Any Dream Will Do’ to land the role of Joseph in the West End musical Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. However for Piers it was a case of only one dream will do - and that dream was to one day meet Lee. His mum, Anna, said: “He absolutely adores Lee. He watches him on YouTube every night after school. There is just something about Lee and he thinks he’s wonderful. “He must have seen every interview he’s done - everything that there is on Lee Mead.” Anna contacted The Dream Factory and could not believe it when just three weeks later the charity’s ‘dream makers’ Annabel and Mary had arranged the dream which was to be a day that Piers and his family would never forget. The charity arranged for a limousine to collect Piers, 14, his parents Anna and Tom, brother Cameron, 18, sister Eloise, 15, and grandmother Sylvia from their Stonards Hill home for a special day in London. They were taken to the Hospital Club in Covent Garden where they spent an hour with Lee who gave Piers a signed CD and a birthday card. Anna said: “We sat chatting and it was just a lovely time. It was just a really lovely relaxed special hour, and it went so quickly.” Afterwards the family was taken for a meal at the Rainforest Café. Anna said: “The atmosphere was brilliant, the food was gorgeous. It was just fun. Everything made it just a perfect day.” Piers, who suffers from cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning and communication difficulties, thoroughly enjoyed his ‘dream’ day. Anna said: “When we got home Piers said ‘that’s the best day of my life’. That was just how it was supposed to be.” The family wish to thank The Dream Factory - and ‘dream makers’ Annabel and Mary - for all their efforts. Anna said: “Annabel and Mary are so lovely. For them to arrange everything to happen so quickly was just wonderful. “The whole thing was just a wonderfully special, memorable day. It just brought tears to my eyes.” Piers’ dream has been funded by money raised by Epping Forest District Council chairman Brian Rolfe during his year in office after he chose The Dream Factory as one of his charities for 2012-13. Avril said: “This was our 184th dream but without the support of our supporters, such as Brian Rolfe, and the amazing work of our ‘dream makers’ none of the dreams would be possible.” She added: “I’m delighted that Piers and his family enjoyed their special day. “That is what The Dream Factory is all about, and with the fundraising efforts of our amazing supporters we look forward to being able to make many more dreams come true in the coming months and years.” For more about the charity, visit http://www.yourdreamfactory.org/

Cadets join pensioners for games afternoon 8.39am - 24th February 2013

CADETS from 414 Squadron Epping & North Weald ATC have continued their Back Chat project with a games afternoon at Wheelers Farm Gardens sheltered housing scheme in North Weald. The project has built relationships between the teenagers and elderly residents since the first visit last April and continues to gain momentum. Tea, coffee, cold drinks and biscuits were served by the cadets and a raffle rounded off the afternoon. Previously cadets had helped residents with practical tasks such as moving household items and gardening. They have also socialised and built friendships with a party, coffee morning and ceremonial tree planting for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee last year. Resident Tony Falco, whose wife Sylvia is the main link in facilitating events with the air cadets, had not attended any of the previous occasions over the past year and after the games session admitted he had not expected to enjoy the afternoon. He said: "I really enjoyed it! The cadets didn't need any coaching - they did really well off their own backs." Corporal Rosie Mercer, 14, said: "This is exactly the purpose of the Back Chat project. The older generation and teenagers do not mix naturally and the project gives us an opportunity to do something together. "Learning about what we have in common, despite our differences, is how relationships are built." Corporal Jacob Hannis, 18, said: "I was beaten at darts, crushed at Trivial Pursuit and lost Scrabble on a technicality. It was really good fun and intensely competitive!" Cadet Hamza Qadri, 14, said: "I thought today was really fun and a good way of bonding with the older generation." Cadet Hannah Knowles, 15, said: "I thought it was brilliant getting to know these people and socialise. Having met them before through the Back Chat project, today I got to know them better."

Epping Forest Council safer, greener and highways portfolio holder Gary Waller has said the council will seek the public's views on the situation and will bring forward consultation with traders in the wake of the situation which has worsened since the station car park charge was increased to £6 per day. The issue was raised by Epping mayor and district councillor Jon Whitehouse at Tuesday's council meeting. He said: "It is having a damaging effect on the shops and market in Epping High Street and I have received more than one tale of people driving to Epping, circling round looking for a space and driving back again." Mr Whitehouse suggested that options open to the council were having an extended stary tariff for parking stays of nine to ten hours or reverting to the short-stay parking arrangement previously in place in the Cottis Lane and Bakers Lane car parks. Mr Waller said there were now "quite a few" empty spaces at the station car park since the charges were increased. He told the meeting: "We want to assist local traders and residents. It is not our intention to have all the spaces (in the Bakers Lane and Cottis Lane car parks) filled up by commuters leaving their cars there during the whole day." He added: "I think we will want a review of the parking charges - one of our priorities must be to assist local traders and it is a very unsatisfactory situation when their customers are unable to park because the spaces are being utilised fully by commuters."

New health body authorised 2.32pm - 21st February 2013

WEST Essex Clinical Commissioning Group has received authorisation from the NHS Commissioning Board to become the statutory body responsible for buying healthcare services for west Essex from April 1. With a budget of about £318m it will purchase NHS services including hospital care, mental health services and community services for the Epping Forest, Harlow and districts. The CCG will be GP-led and run by a combination of clinicians and highly experienced NHS managers. To achieve authorisation West Essex CCG, which has been operating in 'shadow form' since last April, had to evidence its capability against 119 criteria. West Essex CCG met 114 of the criteria - a small number of conditions remain to be demonstrated but these will not affect its fitness to conduct its role. CCG chairman and Harlow GP Dr Rob Gerlis said: "It is with great pleasure that we are able to make this announcement. "Having been authorised with only five conditions is terrific news and is testament to 12 months of hard work, commitment and dedication from every member of staff, as well as tremendous support from our 39 GP member practices and all our partner organisations. "We are passionate about ensuring people in west Essex receive the best possible, high quality care they deserve. "We were able to anticipate these conditions, and plans are already in place to address, therefore we are confident the National Commissioning Board will be satisfied with progress of those plans in time for April. "We want patients to be at the heart of everything we do and we are committed to involving local people in decisions affecting the healthcare received and to improving their health." "Dangerous" road 'not bad enough' to be repaired 10.35am - 21st February 2013

A PLEA for repairs to be carried out along Ongar High Street has fallen on deaf ears after Essex County Council said the road was not bad enough to warrant attention. A bricked road surface was laid along the High Street when the town underwent its enhancement scheme in 1998 but now areas of brick have broken and sunk leaving numerous ‘potholed’ areas. Ongar town councillor Sheila Jackman wrote to Essex County Council highlighting the “serious problem”. Her letter added: “Some years ago Essex County Council implemented an enhancement scheme in the centre of the town. Since then scant attention has been paid to maintenance and we are now faced with a situation where the road is extremely dangerous and we fear a fatality is imminent.” In his reply, highways and transportation cabinet member Derrick Louis said: “We are aware of these defects however they currently do not meet our criteria for immediate repair.” He adds that the route is monitored on a monthly basis “and any further deterioration will be recorded and assessed with the appropriate action taken”. Mrs Jackman said: “Ongar High Street is a main A-road however Essex County Council refuses to realise just how dangerous the road is for road users on two and four wheels. "The pavements too are in need of attention as they are a potential danger to pedestrians. “I think it is time that Essex County Council revised its criteria if hazardous stretches of road like this can be left unrepaired.”

Tickets, £5, will be available on the door (admission is free for under-11s). The rock academy is held at Coopersale Hall School, Epping, every Thursday evening giving people of all ages the opportunity to learn electric guitar, drums, bass or keyboards. The academy is managed by local musician Dean Austin and owned by local musicians and businessmen Simon Baker and Andy Wilson. Former Iron Maiden guitarist Dennis Stratton, who played on the first Iron Maiden album, is a strong supporter. He said "This is a great opportunity for people to learn and play music with professional musicians and join me live on stage for the brilliant concerts Livewire put on for their students." Livewire has academies in Saffron Walden, Bishop’s Stortford and Epping and offers lessons to anyone aged from six to 60. Every lesson finishes with a 15-minute jam session with all pupils joining in well-known rock and pop songs, giving students the experience of playing together in a band from the very first lesson. Simon, Andy and Dean are former directors of the Stortford Music Festival and are involved in other music-related businesses in the area. Simon said: “This is a fantastic way for kids to learn how to play and make that crucial connection between playing an instrument and transferring those skills to playing in a band with other people. “We want to bring that creativity to the young generation of the town with this exciting new concept.” Budding young musicians can attend a free taster lesson at the school. District council confirms council tax freeze

12.20pm - 20th February 2013

EPPING Forest District Council has again frozen its share of council tax bills. Reductions in staff costs and no increase in pay and display car park charges were also key features in the council's budget for 2013-14. There will also be no increase in the council tax levy collected by the district on behalf of Essex County Council, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and many local Town and Parish Councils. However, the charge set for the first time by the newly-elected Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex, Nick Alston, is to increase by 3.49 per cent (£4.77 a year on an average Band D property). Councillor Syd Stavrou said: "Epping Forest District Council has not increased its own share of the council tax since 2010. Savings of £1.4m have been achieved in the 2013-14 budget. "By changing the way it structures and delivers services, Epping Forest District Council has been able to make savings without major reductions in front-line services. We have good levels of reserves. "A significant proportion of the savings in the new budget comes from reducing the size of the district council workforce (saving salary costs of £400,000) without the need for compulsory redundancies. "By delivering services in new and better ways the council has further increased efficiency." She added: "Contributions from the New Homes Bonus and high levels of recycling by residents also help to keep council tax down. "Epping Forest District Council will protect front-line services while balancing large reductions in Central Government funding. "Additional savings of almost £200,000 in 2012-13 have helped cushion the council from one of the toughest spending rounds I can remember. Stimulating the local economy is one of our top priorities. The protection of local services and freeze on council tax comes as many other councils continue to make major cuts in

01/04/2013 Everything Epping Forest Page 10 of 28

services to meet budget pressures." Gross expenditure (excluding the Housing Revenue Account), the amount Epping Forest District Council spends before income is taken into account, will be £73m next year. Less than £7.5m will be raised in council tax towards the district council's net expenditure budget of just over £14m. About £3m will come from Business Rates (National Non-Domestic Rates) with most of the rest coming from other income such as reduced Government grants, fees, charges, rent on commercial property and investments. Broken down into its constituent parts, the total bill for an average Band D council tax payer in Epping Forest district will be: * £148.77 to Epping Forest District Council, and collected on behalf of organisations: * £1,086.75 to Essex County Council * £141.48 to Essex Police * £66.42 to Essex Fire Authority. Parish and town council precepts vary. Mrs Stavrou added: "We believe local residents are best placed to decide how to spend their money and we hope they will spend it locally. "Our aim is to stimulate the local economy by ensuring local people have as much money in their pockets to spend on local goods and services as possible. "We are also holding down pay and display car park charges to encourage as much of that spend as possible in our local high streets."

Business group launching evening meetings 7.33am - 20th February 2013

Murder case: Oil rig worker given life sentence

8.23am - 16th February 2013

A 31-YEAR-OLD oil rig worker has been given a life sentence for the murder of Gillian Andrade, 39, from Buckhurst Hill at a house in Loughton. Daniel Hodges appeared at Crown Court yesterday when he was told he will serve a minimum 17-and-a-half years. Gillian Andrade was discovered dead in a house in Churchfields, Loughton, on July 28 last year. A post mortem examination showed she died from a knife wound. Hodges was working as an oil rigger off the Scottish coast but was renting a room at the house in Churchfields. He had previously been in a relationship with Gillian Andrade and they had met up that evening. He initially denied he was responsible for her death and tried to blame the victim. He had a wound to his neck which police believe was self-inflicted. However he was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with murder. Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Robinson, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "The incredibly thorough investigation by my investigation team and the overwhelming evidence we gathered against Mr Hodges no doubt influenced his decision to enter a guilty plea. "Daniel Hodges was a controlling man with a violent temper. Gillian was a woman who was full of life; a loving mother, daughter and sister. Gillian had been in relationship with Mr Hodges and she trusted him. He abused that trust and selfishly, through his own violent jealousy, took Gillian's life away from her family. "Gillian's family now have to face a future without her. I hope today's sentence is some form of comfort to them. "At least Daniel Hodges is unable to hurt anyway else through his violence whilst he

serves a life sentence for her murder."

Murder case: Victim 's mother pays tribute to "beautiful, kind" daughter 8.23am - 16th February 2013

THE mother of murder victim Gillian Andrade has paid tribute to the "beautiful, kind person" who touched the lives of everyone who knew her. Gillian Andrade was discovered dead in a house in Churchfields, Loughton, on July 28 last year. A post mortem examination showed she died from a knife wound. Daniel Hodges was given a life sentence at Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday and told he will serve a minimum 17-and-a-half years. Gillian's mother, Mary Davey, said: "Gillian Davey Andrade was a beautiful, kind person and anyone who came into contact with her couldn't fail to be touched by her positive outlook to life. "The events of July 2012 have changed all our lives and we came today with no expectations other than to close this terrible chapter because nothing can ease our heartache or bring Gillian back. "No sentence today can compare with the life sentence which was imposed on us last year and Gillian will always be loved and never forgotten. "On behalf of my family I would like to thank Essex Police and Victim Support for all the help they have given us since this terrible event."

Horticultural society stalwart is Townsperson of the Year 10.23pm - 15th February 2013

A GARDENING enthusiast who has been credited with saving Epping Horticultural Society from folding, and helped lead its revival, has been named Epping Town Council's Townsperson of the Year. Lawrence Lewis received his award from mayor Jon Whitehouse at tonight's 'At Home' which is held by the town council each year to thank local organisations for the contribution they make to life in Epping. Mr Lewis was nominated by Epping Horticultural Society chairman Christine Burgess who described him as "a valuable member of our community". Mr Lewis, who was chairman of the society for many years, is the current vice-chairman. He told Everything Epping Forest: "It was a surprise. There are so many people in this town who do such good work. "Volunteering keeps you alive. I get satisfaction from doing the job. If I'd retired and just stopped I wouldn't have lasted - I needed a challenge. "I'm one of those people who can't go into a society without ending up on the committee!" With the help of his wife, Shirley, Mr Lewis has dealt with the collection of subscriptions and organised the delivery of the society's newsletter which he has written for many years. He still runs the society's Meadow Road trading hut so that the society's membership of more than 400 families can benefit from buying their gardening requisites at much less than retail prices. Mr Lewis is at the hut each Sunday morning throughout the year and also sources and buys supplies and takes in deliveries. He is also on hand to offer gardening advice. Mrs Burgess said: "In 1983 Lawrence, again with Shirley's support, saved the society from near collapse and by his tireless work for the society has brought it to its present size and strength." She added: "Without him there would be no society and Epping would have lost a very valuable community asset." Mr Lewis also organised the society's annual show from 1983 to 2002 and with his advice and expertise the event was revived last year. He is a listed Royal Horticultural Society judge and continues to be in demand at shows across Essex, Suffolk and Hertfordshire. St Clare Hospice has also benefited from his voluntary work. He originally helped decorate the hospice's Epping High Street shop and for many years, until about 2006, served there two days a week whilst regularly helping with the upkeep of the hospice gardens at Hastingwood.

* A presentation was also made to Epping Hall caretaker Jeanette Tappenden who is retiring at the end of March after 34 years service. Jeanette will be staying with the town council on a casual basis to cover a few hours each week.

Primary school headteacher to leave after 15 years

5.43pm - 15th February 2013

THE headteacher of Theydon Bois Primary School is to leave at the end of August. Elspeth Bonds has been at the Orchard Drive school for 15 years. The school recently received its latest Ofsted report which gave it an improved rating from 'satisfactory' to 'good' with inspectors praising Mrs Bonds and the senior staff for their efforts. The inspectors, who visited the school last month, stated: "The headteacher and senior staff lead the school well. They check teaching very carefully to ensure that pupils' learning is maintained at a good standard." The report added that "teaching is good in all year groups and some is 'outstanding'. It adds that English, mathematics and a range of other subjects are all taught effectively and, as a result, pupils do well". In her resignation letter dated today (Friday) - which has been posted on the school's website - Mrs Bonds wrote: "The years have been eventful with many challenges and successes. "The school has been served well by many staff, governors and volunteers from whom I have received tremendous commitment and support." She adds: "Many pupils have passed through the school and gone on to achieve well in their chosen paths and I shall be watching the progress of all my current pupils with continued interest. "Many parents of past pupils have remained in contact and such is the nature of our school and surrounding community that I know many of you will stay in touch to keep me informed of your family's achievements." Mrs Bonds adds that she is "proud" of her association and involvement with Theydon Bois and thanks the Governing Body of 1997-98 "wholeheartedly for the faith they showed in appointing me and giving me this wonderful opportunity to share my passion with so many people".

01/04/2013 Everything Epping Forest Page 13 of 28

She concludes by writing: "Please continue to support our school the way you always have and be very proud of your wonderful children. "It will be business as usual in the intervening months and I look forward to sharing forthcoming events and successes with you."

Horsemeat scandal: Schools send 'our meals are fine' letter to parents 5.23pm - 15th February 2013

PARENTS at three local independent schools have been told they have nothing to worry about regarding meals at their children's schools following the horsemeat revelations. Matthew Hagger, managing principal at Coopersale Hall School, Epping; Oaklands School in Loughton, and Normanhurst School In Chingford, has told parents in a letter that he is writing "to allay any fears you may have that our children have been affected by the growing scandal". Mr Hagger stresses that food at all the schools is prepared freshly on site by the Chartwells chef and his team. The daily order for fruit and vegetables comes either from the local greengrocer or direct from local farmers and the meat order is delivered daily by local butcher, either through K & P Family Butchers in The Broadway, Loughton, or Nigel Fredericks in London. Mr Hagger writes: "All suppliers, including farmers, are audited against very strict food quality and safety standards and regularly undergo independent audits to ensure these standards are upheld." He adds: "Chartwells is one of the largest education-based catering companies in the UK and provides food for a large number of independent schools nationwide. "We work hard with them to ensure the food we serve is healthy, nutritious and prepared using fresh ingredients from scratch. "Financially, we provide an extremely high budget per pupil - around four times as much per day as in most state schools - to ensure that children are well fed with good food. "Unlike many schools, we do not use any pre-prepared dishes and we know where the source ingredients come from." He concludes his letter stating: "I'm sure the food industry will face many more hurdles as the horsemeat scandal reaches the final furlong, but please rest assured that our school lunches are not, and have never been, affected."

She said: "It's an amazing amount of money to have raised from Spelling Bees and Tables Challenges." "We shall be doing a sponsored Spelling Sprint and Art Party to continue raising funds for this important cause. "There is so much in the news about cruelty to children so the charity has a special meaning to our more fortunate pupils."

Charity appeals for fundraising volunteers 8.55am - 15th February 2013

A CANCER charity is appealing for volunteers to join a new local Fundraising Event Group. Macmillan Cancer Support provides medical, practical, emotional and financial support and pushes for better cancer care. Fundraising Groups are vital to the charity. To continue with the work it does, Macmillan needs more local volunteers to boost its fundraising network and to enable the charity to reach more people affected by cancer in the area. The new group will be made up of volunteers from south west Essex, including Loughton, Buckhurst Hill, Chigwell, and Waltham Abbey. Becoming a member will be a fun and sociable way to help. Volunteers will be part of a friendly team of people, working together to organise fundraising events. Past events held by some fundraising groups include glitzy dinner and dances, curry nights, Christmas parties, quiz evenings and coffee mornings. It is up to the volunteer how much time they want to give and group meetings will be arranged to suit members' availability. Herts and Essex fundraising manager Laura Bazzoni said: "Fundraising with Macmillan is great fun. By joining this new Event Group, volunteers will be making a huge difference to Macmillan and, ultimately, to the lives of people affected by cancer. However much time you have to give, I would love to hear from you." For more information, ring Laura on 07793 579363 or email [email protected] . Work to start on rugby club improvements 4.17pm - 14th February 2013

THORNWOOD-based rugby club Upper Clapton is all set fulfill its vision of providing improved facilities. The club's plans to redevelop its Upland Road headquarters have been approved by Epping Forest District Council giving it the go-ahead to start a three-year, £1.6m project. The work will see the replacement of the current 80-year-old pavilion with a modern, eco- efficient club house, a new all weather and floodlit training pitch and more than 100 additional car parking spaces to relieve the pressure of match-day parking in the local area. The redevelopment is supported by the Rugby Football Union and Sport both of which have provided significant financial support. The first phase of the redevelopment will see the all-weather pitch in place by the end of this season. The club plans to have its new clubhouse in place next year. Mike Harris, head of facilities at Upper Clapton, said: "Getting the decision from the council's district development committee is a major boost for the club. "Now we have permission we will begin making changes very soon. "We are already talking to the Rugby Football Union - which is providing the majority of the funding for the all-weather pitch - about the timescales for its installation which could begin with the next few weeks." Club chairman Steve Slade said: "Without permission to bring new facilities to the club we would have found it hard to continue. That would have been a disaster - not only because the club would close but for the hundreds of young people that use the club every weekend to play rugby. "Indeed many of the councillors at the meeting were generous in their recognition of the work the club does to support youth rugby, not just at our club but in the wider community too." Upper Clapton FC was founded in 1879 and is one of the oldest rugby clubs in existence. The club, which has been based at Upland Road since 1933, fields three adult sides and 11 youth sides (catering for players aged five-17) each week. The council approved the redevelopment of the club's current facilities together with the sale of a small parcel of land with outline planning permission to provide finance for the project.

Dad Keith wins dream makeover

3.54pm - 14th February 2013

LOUGHTON dad Keith Welch has won himself a dream makeover after his daughter Emily entered him into a competition. When Emily, 15, a student at Davenant Foundation School, read about Dream Makeover Essex, a free competition giving four people a chance to win a unique life-changing opportunity and a top-to-toe makeover worth up to £25,000 for each winner, she decided it was time to treat her dad. Keith had no idea what Emily wrote in the application but her entry was among more than 2,000 email enquiries which were whittled down to 32 finalists. All were interviewed by cosmetic dentist Ash Parmar, skin specialist Frances Furlong and laser eye expert Mr Pillai. Keith said: "To say I am thrilled is an understatement. It was a shock but a wonderful one! Just to be short listed to the last 32 was great but to be a winner, Wow!" Keith claims he is not a shy man or unconfident but it has been a challenging few years with death in the family, divorce, moving and being made redundant as a building site manager. He said: "I think Emily felt a bit sorry for me."

01/04/2013 Everything Epping Forest Page 15 of 28

Keith, 54, and his three children, aged 15, 17 and 19, are a tight knit family and as a single parent Keith balances budget and family needs. Emily said: "I really wanted this for Dad because he so deserves it." Keith said: "I had let myself go I suppose, but right now I'm determined to make the most of my Dream Makeovers. This is great for me and good for the children too." After laser eye treatment from Mr Pillai at Advanced Vision Care, Keith is delighted not only with his new look, minus glasses, but also his eyesight. "When reading construction drawings became difficult I got myself a pair of those cheap glasses thinking they would help me but actually they hampered me working on a building site. "I had never been to an optician let alone thought about corrective eye surgery. It turns out I'm long sighted in both eyes but after laser treatment I am amazed how clear my vision is and I have achieved almost 100 per cent in both eyes. It was like magic and now I can even see myself in the mirror - the first time in 15 years!" Keith's dental health was another issue. One tooth had fallen out with others threatened with problems and although he has stopped smoking the affects are lasting. Several sessions with the hygienist, teeth whitening, and cosmetic contouring from Smile Design by Ash will fix the problem. Skin enhancement procedures from France Furling at Perfect Skin are working on his wrinkles and lines so by the time fitness training from Body Perfect kicks in; grooming from beauty salon MODE is complete and hair coiffured by salon Zoology all the winners really will feel like new people. Fashion and clothes advice comes from style director Aneliese Deane and all photography is taken by Memorable Portraits. Keith said: "I was embarrassed about my smile but that's all changing and in any case I am smiling inside about it all." TV presenter Jeff Brazier is hosting a 'Reveal' event at the Marriott Hotel, Waltham Abbey, on March 21. To view Keith's progress visit www.deammakeoveressex.co.uk

RHIANNA WRITES: High Street parking needs revamp 10.39am - 13th February 2013

Rhianna Saharoy, 15, lives in Epping and attends Bancroft's School, Woodford Green. She writes occasional articles for Everything Epping Forest

WHEN driving down Epping High Street, my mum often complains about the cramped parking places. The slanted positions makes it hard to quickly slot into places when trying to run into a shop. One good thing about the parking in the High Street is that you don't have to pay but it does have a one-hour limit throughout the day which isn't always helpful. A while ago the places were not such a problem but in recent years when the town has got busier it is now quite a issue. The tight fit also increases the chance of cars getting damaged which is obviously a negative thing. If you don't want to park in the cramped spaces on the High Street you have to go to the car park behind M&S where you have to pay for the luxury of having enough room to get out of your car without having to be careful not the hit the one next to you. I think the High Street should be revamped to change the layout for parking so spaces are vertical as opposed to diagonal and people are able to drive into them quickly without hassle.

Police Commissioner defends precept increase 8.29am - 13th February 2013

THE new Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex says it was a "prudent and responsible" decision to increase the Essex Police share of council tax bills for 2013-14. Nick Alston told Epping Forest District Council's Safer, Cleaner, Greener Scrutiny Standing Panel: "Everyone says we really care about policing - we're not seeing enough police." He added: "I decided that if we were to put ourselves in a responsible position we needed a bit more (money)." Mr Alston said he was "staggered" to discover that in Essex, residents pay less for policing than any other county. If Essex residents were paying the national average amount towards policing it would provide 407 more officers in the county, he said. The approved police budget means the Essex Police share of Band D bills will increase by £4.77 in 2013-14.

Deputy Police Commissioner to be appointed 8.27am - 13th February 2013

THE new Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex has said he will be appointing a deputy, with the job to be advertised next week. Nick Alston, who was elected last November and currently has eight staff, told Epping Forest District Council that the selection would be an "open process". He told last night's Safer, Cleaner, Greener Scrutiny Standing Panel: "I want and need a deputy. My wife will kill me if I don't get a deputy!"

The children painted and decorated Chinese fans, made and decorated their own Chinese lanterns and had fun creating and performing their own Chinese Dragon dances. Mrs Campbell added: "To mark it being the year of the snake the children designed and cut out their own snake mobiles and enjoyed learning how to make and cook vegetable wantons. "Each child also painted their own square of a Chinese mask and these squares were then put together to create some magnificent Chinese masks. "The children from different year groups worked well to help and support each other throughout the different activities. "All the children had a fun-filled day of learning and developing their skills."

Flats go -ahead would bring £43,000 boost for village 3.50pm - 12th February 2013

COMMUNITY facilities in Theydon Bois would receive a near £43,000 boost if planning permission is given for a block of flats on the site of the Railway Arms pub. Councillors will meet on February 20 to decide whether to give the go-ahead for the demolition of thepub and the building of ten flats - four one-bed and six two-bed on the site, along with ten parking spaces. District council planning officers are recommending that the development be approved, subject to the completing of a planning agreement that would see the applicant contribute £42,838.25 towards community facilities in the parish Theydon Bois. A planning officer's report to the planning committee states: "The proposed development would make good use of previously developed land in a sustainable location. It is well designed and would make a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the locality while safeguarding the living conditions of neighbours. "The offer of a contribution of £42,838.25 towards off-site provision of community facilities within Theydon Bois is in accordance with adopted planning policy and would offset the loss of the site for a public house."

Farm shop turns £50 into £1,850 for hospice 12.01pm - 11th February 2013

A NORTH Weald farm shop has proved it is top of the crops when it comes to growing cash for St Clare Hospice. A total of £1,850 has been raised by Ashlyns Farm Shop, Epping Road, in the St Clare Hospice £50 Push Challenge which saw 38 businesses each receive £50 to see just how much they could turn it into. Staff at Ashlyns threw themselves into the challenge using the £50 stake money to advertise their Santa’s Grotto. Hours were spent creating the magical grotto which involved diverting from their usual job description to become part time elves. Shop manager Rob Dixon said: “We held raffles and sold our own mince pies and mulled wine to complement our main fundraising. "The grotto completely sold out and we were thrilled to have raised so much for St Clare Hospice. “As a local business, we want to support a charity at the heart of our community.” Ashlyns Farm Shop may have triumphed over the 37 other businesses across west Essex and the borders of East Herts but the real winner was St Clare which is set to receive £14,000 through their combined efforts. Maria Tillett- Hayes, corporate relationship manager at St Clare Hospice, said: “We are delighted to announce our challenge winners. “The Ashlyns Farm Shop team totally deserve their title, the Grotto was a great idea which was thoroughly endorsed by my son who got to meet Santa and his reindeer at North Weald. “I’d also like to thank all the businesses that took part this year in raising money for St Clare Hospice. “The next £50 Push Challenge is on the horizon, so get those thinking caps on! "Together, we can continue to make every day matter for local people."

In the last three years the volunteers have clocked up 61,414 hours - equivalent to 8,773 days of work or 1,253 full working weeks. Ladies given Jack the Ripper talk 9.59am - 10th February 2013

A TALK on Jack the Ripper and London's East End was given to the last meeting of Ongar and Shelley Ladies Thursday Group. Mile End was so called because it was a mile from the boundary of the City and Tower Hamlets, as it was also known as in the 19th century, was so called because is was the hamlets for those who looked after the Tower of London. Conditions in the East End in the late 1800s were extremely poor with workhouses, slums and many gangs. Whitechapel housed over 2,000 people and many prostitutes roamed the streets. There were a series of murders of the lowest class of women, all prostitutes and in their 40s. Many victims were murdered in the same way.

LOUGHTON-based chartered accountants Haslers will present a trophy in honour of their late Senior Tax Partner Martin Anderson to the winners of the Business Race at the Roding Valley Half Marathon. Organised by Woodford Green AC with Essex Ladies, this year's event is at Ashton Playing Fields, Woodford Green, on Sunday, March 3. Chigwell students at Linguistics Olympiad 8.31am - 9th February 2013

MORE than 40 Chigwell School students - aged between 12 and 18 - took part in the Linguistics Olympiad. The school entered pupils in all three levels - foundation, intermediate and advanced - for the two-day event. Questions ranged from Yodaspeak - English as spoken by Yoda in the Star Wars films which follows rules of word order and syntax which are not standard English but nonetheless regular enough as to constitute a dialect - through to indigenous American languages and ancient Phoenician. The challenge lies in solving problems in languages never before encountered to test capacity for linguistic logic so pupils have to deduce and state grammatical rules, work out how symbols would be written or match up vocabulary having been given parts of the language to work from. Students work alone or in teams. The patron of the UK Linguistics Olympiad is Olympic athlete Christine Ohuruogu MBE, who is also a UCL Linguistics graduate and Honorary Fellow. This year national numbers for the event topped a record 6,000. Chigwell School's Head of Languages Simon Coppell said: "It has been wonderful to see so many Chigwell pupils enjoying the Linguistics Olympiad this year. "Some of them come back every year in the same team and really enjoy it. It makes them think about languages they've never even heard of before and how language learning is a craft that you can apply not just to French, German or Spanish, but to thousands of other languages. "Chigwell has a long record in participating in the competition and was among the first schools to take part in last year's new foundation stage for younger pupils."

Roding Valley High School student 'brainier than Einstein' 9.19pm - 7th February 2013

TEN students at Roding Valley High School, Loughton, have been ranked among the top one per cent most intellectual people in the world after achieving top marks in a MENSA test. One of the students - 16-year-old Lauren Marbe - achieved a score of 161, ranking her higher than Albert Einstein. Twenty-nine Year 10 and 11 students who were identified with 'Higher Learning Potential' took part in the Mensa supervised test which covers a range of cognitive abilities related to intelligence. The average IQ score in the UK is 100 and those who successfully score 148 or more, placing them in the top two per cent of the UK's intellectuals, are invited to join the prestigious High IQ Society. All of the 29 Roding Valley students tested achieved above the UK average with 18 achieving scores which put them in the top ten per cent of the nation's intellectuals. Leading research suggests about one per cent of the world's population has an IQ of 135 or more, a figure achieved by ten of the Roding Valley pupils. Five of the students - - Year 11 students Lauren Marbe and Archie Collins and Year 10 pupils Georgina King, Henry Adams-Walsh and Caris Jaffe - have been invited to join MENSA after each scored over 148. Lauren's score of 161 also beat well renowned physicist Stephen Hawking and Microsoft owner Bill Gates by one point. Albert Einstein is estimated to have achieved a score of 160. Lauren said: "I was so shocked, I didn't expect to do so well. I'm really happy with the result - really happy with myself." Tamie Kyriakou, the school's challenge and enrichment co-ordinator, said: "I'm delighted but not surprised that some of our students are of a calibre befitting Mensa. "Lauren's result is astonishing. It's left everybody speechless. You never imagine you will be in the presence of someone with such high intellect at such a young age." Headteacher Paul Banks said: "In a time where the media and Government criticise our youth for their supposed ignorance and superficiality, it is even more vital to celebrate and encourage intelligence, for it is these bright young things which we hope, with the guidance of a good education, will become the future leaders of our society."

Could district get a new M11 junction?

6.07pm - 7th February 2013

A NEW M11 junction has come a step closer with the Department of Transport about to assess the proposals which have been approved in principle by Essex County Council. Nazeing, Roydon and Sheering MP Robert Halfon has long campaigned for a new junction serving Harlow. While the junction is intended primarily to serve Harlow, it would be within the Epping Forest district, Epping Forest Council has said. The council added that it will be important to develop a "clear input" into the consultations to be held with key stakeholders in the coming months. Mr Halfon said Essex County Council officers are still consulting other public bodies on the best location. He said the key area under consideration is approximately the stretch of the M11 that runs south of the A1060 and north of Hobbs Cross Road. Mr Halfon said: "I have been campaigning for an additional junction on the M11 for over eight years now. "We are being choked to death by traffic and motorists are suffering every day. Harlow has just one entrance to a motorway, whereas similar towns like Welwyn Garden City and have three or four. "We desperately need a new junction." He added: "It's been a long campaign. I have raised it seven times in Parliament, including in two full debates. "Also, I have worked to bring Transport Ministers on a number of occasions to the town, to make the case for investing in Harlow. "There is fantastic news as our highways authority (Essex County Council) has concluded a £500,000 study and given our campaign the green light. "Once the junction is built, it will mean 3,000 extra jobs in Harlow's Enterprise Zone, smoother traffic flows, and a stronger case for regeneration in our town centre. "I believe Harlow should be a magnet for investment and I will be urging the Government to put us at the top of the list for new transport infrastructure. "A new junction will make a huge difference, help with traffic in general and make Harlow a better place to live." Essex County Council highways and transportation cabinet member Derrick Louis said: "I've worked closely with Robert Halfon MP on this and he has done a huge amount of work, campaigning on this for many years. "I am delighted the scheme for a new junction in Harlow has been endorsed by the Harlow Stansted Gateway Transport Board. "This scheme will support the delivery of thousands of new jobs for the Harlow area and bring much needed improvements to the road network in and around Harlow, including the new Enterprise Zone. "I hope partners both locally and nationally will support the progression of this scheme."

motorway link is definitely wanted and our MP has been campaigning for it. Its siting will require careful thought. There are plans to build 1,200 homes in the area of Jacks Hatch to Broadley Common which will directly connect to Sumners in Harlow. There is no increase planned for the infrastructure new housing of this scale would require. This would cause chaos on the roads around Epping as well as a requirement for more parking in Epping .There will be no increase in the capacity of the sewage treatment works or extra schools or health services. It is on Green Belt land in the Epping Forest district. A new M11 link would not help this situation.

George Hart, from (by email) - £500,000 on a study! How on earth can Essex County Council justify spending such an enormous sum of council tax payers' money on a study. Highly overpaid consultants is probably the answer. With money squandered in this way it is little wonder our council tax is so high.

VIDEO: Police target inconsiderate drivers 8.30am - 7th February 2013

POLICE are using video footage of a van driver following an unmarked police car on the M25 near Epping to highlight a new road safety operation to curb the menace of inconsiderate drivers or motorcyclists. Operation Safeway targets bullying tailgaters who drive too close, impatient drivers who undertake, those who overtake on roundabouts and others whose behaviour put innocent lives at risk. The operation is being carried out in response to growing public concern about poor driving standards that have led to fears for the safety of all road users. Police will be using cars and motorbikes fitted with video cameras to ensure that offenders are dealt with quickly and efficiently without officers spending time in court. The video footage click here was recorded from an unmarked police car travelling at 70mph in a line of traffic in the outside lane on the M25 near Epping. The police car was tailgated by a van whose driver flashed his lights and took both hands off the wheel at the same time to make gestures at the officer driving the car. At one point the van was estimated to be less than 1ft from the rear of the police car. The van driver was later stopped and given a fixed penalty notice. Police will prosecute drivers for careless driving but the majority are more likely to be sent on an educational driving course in an effort to improve overall rider and driver behaviour. Sgt Simon Willsher, of the Essex Police Casualty Reduction Unit, said: "Many drivers do not realise that they can be prosecuted for inconsiderate driving when it also careless driving. "For example, if someone is tailgating because they aren't paying attention and don't think about stopping distances they can go on a National Driver Alertness Course without going through court or having penalty points on their driving licences. "If, on the other hand, they are tailgating because they are impatient and trying to bully people out of the way they can be prosecuted for careless driving. "We will be looking at drivers whose driving is not up the standard expected of a competent full licence holder. "This could include impatience at junctions, undertaking and any other situation where a driver or rider may be inconvenienced or placed at risk by the behaviour of another driver. "By using cars and motorbikes with video recording equipment we can speed up the court process and it may not be necessary for officers to go to court for cases that are contested. "We anticipate the majority of offences discovered will be dealt with by sending drivers on educational courses where they will be shown video evidence of how inconsiderate driving can cause crashes and put lives at risk. "We want to change driver behaviour for the better rather than fine them or give them penalty points on their licences." Essex Police casualty reduction manager Adam Pipe said: "Police and Essex County Council's Casualty Reduction Board are receiving increasing numbers of complaints and concerns in relation to poor driving behaviour. "Poor driving behaviour features as a factor within many road traffic collisions which all too often lead to fatal or serious injuries. "These behaviours can also lead to minor collisions that can serious delays and disruption to busy main routes such as the A12, A13 and M25 and M11. "We have always taken action against inconsiderate drivers, however we recognise increasing opportunities to refer offenders on to educational courses rather than prosecution through the courts in an effort to improve rider and driver behaviour." Operation Safeway will run alongside various other road safety operations and the successful No Excuses campaign currently being carried out by Essex Police and Essex County Council.

Woman tricked into giving bank account details

6.22pm - 6th February 2013

DETECTIVES have renewed an appeal to beware of bogus police officers following a incident in Chigwell when a woman aged in her 80s was tricked into giving her bank details. She received a phone call from a man claiming to be a detective chief inspector from the Metropolitan Police. The caller, who claimed he was DCI Charlston, told the woman she had been the victim of a fraud and he needed all her bank details, which she provided. The woman was then told the officer would need to see her bank cards and that a courier would be sent to collect them. A man turned up 30 minutes later and took the cards. It is not yet known how much has

01/04/2013 Everything Epping Forest Page 22 of 28

been taken from the woman's savings. Detectives are investigating the incident which was reported on Tuesday morning. The latest warning follows an alert issued on Monday about a bogus caller claiming to be a police officer, who attempts to use the police non-emergency 101 telephone number to obtain bank details. That suspect is known to call people and tell them their bank details had been found in possession of arrested suspects. In an attempt to verify that he was a genuine officer he gave the name of Sgt James Hackett (no such officer exists) and invited his intended victim to call him back urgently, within five minutes, on the police 101 number. One victim did call him back to find out more but became suspicious because there was no dialling tone and no extension number was given. He hung up immediately. Another victim was tricked into giving details. Inspector Paul Wells said: "We have no evidence that the three incidents are connected because the methods are not the same in all three cases. However, in each case the caller claimed to be a police officer and claimed to be investigating an alleged theft or fraud against the victim. "It is absolutely vital that people are on their guard if they receive a call of this kind. Genuine police officers will never ask for bank details over the telephone. "It is possible that one man or a group of criminals working together is using different names and different stories to trick the elderly or vulnerable. "One simple rule will prevent you from falling for this kind of con and that is to never give bank details to anyone who has called you. "The same is true of people who knock at your door. If an individual is legitimate, they should not mind your asking for them to prove who they are." Anyone who is contacted by a caller claiming to be police investigating a bank card fraud should contact police on 101. Anyone with information about suspicious callers claiming to be police should call detectives at Loughton CID, also on 101.

Councillors raise shutters concerns 9.24am - 6th February 2013

EPPING Town Council has voiced concerns about the 'heavy duty' shutters which are used on shop premises in the High Street. Councillors said they would prefer "more sympathetic" 'lighter weight' shutters especially in the conservation area. Councillors were discussing an application from So Glam boutique which seeks to allow it to keep its pink shutters. Town councillor Tony Church said the town council could not do anything about the pink colour of the So Glam shutters adding: "The difficulty we have is that it's in a conservation area." He added: "This unit is in a unique area. It has had an historic past of damage to windows and I have some sympathy with a new shop. It's a very difficult one." He said that when it was a kitchen fittings shop the window was smashed three times in four weeks. Councillors agreed to comment to Epping Forest District Council, which will make the final decision, that they would prefer see-through shutters in the town. Mayor Jon Whitehouse said there was a variety of shutters in Epping and that the district council should look at approving plans for ones more sympathetic to the conservation area. Councillor Nigel Avey said the council should "bend over backwards" to support traders in the town. So Glam owner Georgia Kousoulou told Everything Epping Forest: "I really hope I get to keep them as it seriously could affect my business. "I really do respect the rules and regulations but given the position of my shop I really do think I should be given permission. "With shops shutting down left right and centre we all need to stick together and support each other. "Let's keep the local high streets open. I just want to protect my business just like any other shop owner."

Jonathan Weinberg (?@JW_Ten14 on Twitter) - Perhaps it would be wise to worry less about the kind of shutter and more about the shutters permanently down on many High Road shops.

Robin Mingay, writing on the Everything Epping Forest Facebook page - Why not? They have every right to protect their shops, particularly when you consider we have nightclubs in the town who can't control everyone after they have left.

Police warning over bogus police officer 4.28pm - 4th February 2013

POLICE are warning the public to be on their guard against a bogus police officer who attempts to use the non-emergency number 101 to steal bank details. The man is known to call people at random and tell them their bank details had been found in possession of arrested suspects. In an attempt to verify that he was a genuine officer he gave the name of 'Sgt James Hackett' (no such officer exists) and invited his intended victim to call him back urgently, within five minutes, on the police 101 number. One victim did call him back to find out more but became suspicious because there was no ring tone and no extension number was given. He hung up immediately. Another victim was tricked into giving details. Epping Forest crime reduction officer Tony Ellis said: "We are aware of two cases where this trickster tried to obtain his victim’s bank details. In one he succeeded. "These calls can immediately be identified as fraudulent because we would never ask for bank details over the telephone. "This man might use many other aliases and try different stories but the single rule that will prevent you from becoming the victim of this type of con is very simple - under no circumstances whatsoever must you give your banking details to anyone asking for them particularly over the telephone. "If you receive a call of this nature please note what the caller says. If you suspect the caller in any way, discontinue the conversation and call me on 101 extension 319383. ”

A RARE vinyl album donated to the St Clare Hospice has raised £325 for the charity. The copy of the 1969 album Sound of Sunforest was snapped up just 24 hours after it had been put on display in the hospice's bookstore in Bishop's Stortford last Friday. Shop manager Jeff Hepting said the speedy sale of the folk rock album had given the staff a buzz for the rest of the day.

01/04/2013 Everything Epping Forest Page 25 of 28

"I did my Internet research on the album, priced it accordingly but to sell it so quickly was great," said Jeff, who has worked in vinyl record shops in the past. The record was brought in by a woman who had cleared out books and records from her husband's collection. "I don't think she would have known how rare it was…I just hope her husband didn't mind!" It is not the first time the St Clare Hospice shop has sold a rare record: It once sold a copy of the only album by The Koobas, a band signed by Brian Epstein, for £450. The record had been found in a shopping trolley.

THE new landlord of Moreton's Nag's Head pub is supporting the Our Pride at Stake litter clean-up campaign with a limited-edition menu item. Publican Chris Brett is selling 'Our Pride at Steak' for £11.50, with £1 for every steak sold donated to raising funds for the village litter-pick on Sunday, March 24, starting at Moreton Primary School at 10am. Our Pride at Stake has been set up to clean-up the litter dropped along verges and ditches around Bovinger, Bobbingworth, The Lavers, Moreton and the roads towards Fyfield and Ongar. Organisers are calling for volunteers to give up the morning to help clear cans, boxes and other debris. Chris said: "We got the idea when one of our campaign supporters mistakenly typed 'Our pride at steak' into Google when looking-up our Facebook page so we thought we'd have a bit of fun with a play on words. "It's great for the Nag's Head and our customers to be involved in supporting this important community campaign." The 'Our Pride at Steak' - 8oz steak onglet with spicy potato wedges and coleslaw - will is available during February and March. The Our Pride at Stake team is calling on other local businesses to support the clean-up, including donations towards fuel, photocopying, supplies and refreshments for the volunteers. Volunteers can sign-up in advance by joining facebook/OurPrideAtStake and following @ourprideatstake on Twitter. To pledge financial support or other donations, and for further information, ring Graeme Cooper on 01277 890470.

Ben loses two stone in four weeks

7.59am - 4th February 2013

FORMER Epping mayor Ben Murphy, who is undertaking a huge weight loss challenge to raise money for The Dream Factory charity, has lost over two stone in four weeks.

Already his efforts have raised £3,000 for the charity which was founded by Epping mother Avril Mills following the death of her son, Oliver, from leukaemia. The Dream Factory grants wishes, or 'dreams', for children and young people with life- threatening or life-limiting conditions nationwide. The money already raised by Ben will pay for two families to visit Euro Disney in Paris. Mr Murphy, 29, from Epping, began the challenge on January 1 having set himself the target of losing five stone by August 31. Regular updates are being posted on an online blog http://www.lardymurphy.blogspot.co.uk/ Mr Murphy said: "The results show a great start to the challenge and I remain very focused on my end goal and beyond. "The past four weeks have been about completely restructuring my lifestyle and changing my attitude and reaction to a whole range of day-to-day scenarios. "The mental challenge is just as hard as the physical challenge and equally as important for long-term success." Mr Murphy added: "I have lost 2st 3lbs in four weeks which sounds like an enormous amount of weight but to fall within healthy guidelines I still have a very long way to go. "At the start of the challenge my BMI (Body Mass Index) was 42.05 and is now 40.3. Anything over 40 is listed as 'morbidly obese' so I am now on the edge of moving out of that health risky category which is great. "I've been completely overwhelmed by the support I've received from friends, family and members of the local community. "The team at Concept Fitness UK in Epping have offered me free personal training sessions, Amy Bramble has offered free yoga lessons and I'm also now doing a monthly radio segment with Dave Monk on BBC Essex, sharing my journey with listeners. "Of course there have been slip-ups along the way. I went rogue at a friend's wedding two weeks ago and ended up drinking a large amount of wine which resulted in me working extra hard to burn off the calories the next day with an atrocious hang-over." The Dream Factory founder Avril Mills said: "I wish to thank everyone who has generously donated as part of Ben's challenge. "I can assure you that this money is already helping to make wishes come true for some of the very poorly children we are working with." Donations can be made online at http://www.justgiving.com/TheMurf or by ringing the charity on 020 8501 1234. For more about The Dream Factory, visit http://www.yourdreamfactory.org/

Record results for LAMDA students 9.35am - 3rd February 2013

STUDENTS at Roding Valley High School, Loughton, are celebrating a record set of London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) examination results. Every one of the 26 pupils from Years 7 to 9 who took the exams - ranging from Level 1 Grade 3 to Level 2 Grade 5 - received a Pass with Distinction. Pupils had been working with Head of Year 7 Tanya Ogunbiyi and Head of Expressive Arts Louise Walker as part of the school's extra-curricular drama programme. They were assessed for the qualification by an external examiner on their knowledge, technique and interpretation of their performance pieces. Mrs Walker said: "The pupils worked incredibly hard on their performance pieces and were dedicated to attending both the after -school club and their one-to-one sessions with their chosen teacher." The students were required to learn two script extracts that demonstrated their performance skills and be able to recall information about their chosen characters and storyline during a questioning session. A vast majority of the students achieved maximum marks. Mrs Walker added: "These exams not only provide a fun and structured way for pupils to enjoy drama, they also promote valuable speaking and listening skills which can be transferred across the whole curriculum." The only solo performance came from Year 9 student Lucy Maguire, 13, who was this year's highest achieving student. She said: "I really enjoyed doing LAMDA. It was my first time doing a solo so I was surprised how well I did. "I worked really hard on the pieces and even came to school on weekends to work on my script with Mrs Walker."

MP welcomes council's New Homes Bonus 7.56am - 1st February 2013

EPPING Forest MP Eleanor Laing has welcomed the Government's announcement that Epping Forest District Council is to receive £1,285,231 from the Government's New Homes Bonus. The New Homes Bonus is a key part of the Government's strategy to increase the supply of available housing and ensures local authorities which promote and welcome growth can share in its economic benefits. Through the Bonus for every new home built, the Government will match the funding local authorities receive in additional council tax. This includes councils bringing empty properties back into use and there is an additional amount for affordable homes. Mrs Laing said: "It is great news that Epping Forest will receive over £1.2m through the New Homes Bonus, which can be spent by Epping Forest District Council on improving local infrastructure, delivering additional homes or on anything that will benefit the local community." She added: "Under the previous Government, housebuilding fell to its lowest peacetime level since the 1920s, with Labour's top-down targets building nothing but resentment. "Conservatives in Government have taken a fundamentally different approach with the New Homes Bonus. "We are rewarding, rather than penalising, councils and communities for welcoming development, and providing a powerful incentive for Epping Forest District Council to help make sure our children have good quality, affordable housing in the Epping Forest district." The Bonus is based on the council tax of additional homes and those brought back into use, with a premium for affordable homes, and is paid for six years. It ensures that those local authorities which promote and welcome growth can share in the economic benefits, and build the communities in which people want to live and work.

Chance to nominate an NHS Hero 7.04am - 1st February 2013

HEALTH bosses in west Essex want to hear about your NHS Hero. The NHS Heroes campaign is a chance to give a little back by saying thank you. It gives everyone in England the chance to acknowledge the NHS staff who have been their heroes this winter - patients, their friends and families, work colleagues and professional peers can all nominate their personal NHS Heroes. West Essex Clinical Commissioning Group chairman Dr Rob Gerlis said: "This winter we have seen just how inspirational our NHS staff are, it is because of their determination and spirit that patients have continued to be able to access the care they need. "The NHS employs over 1.4 million people, who are all trying to make a difference to people's lives. "With an organisation so large it can be difficult for members of the public to show their appreciation for the care they have received - NHS Heroes is their chance to do this. "We know there are countless NHS Heroes out there - so we are expecting a blizzard of nominations." The last nationwide NHS Heroes campaign attracted more than 3,500 nominations. Trainee guide dogs seek homes

7.01am - 1st February 2013

THE Guide Dogs charity is appealing for volunteers in Epping and North Weald to board its trainee dogs during evenings and weekends, following their day of training. Boarders must be willing to have the trainee guide dog in their home, feed and groom it on a daily basis and follow guidelines from the dog's trainer. Boarders also need to provide a safe secure enclosed garden or yard, so that the dog cannot escape and ideally, a concrete area for the dog to relieve itself. Ideally, boarders will be either working part -time, working from home, retired, or able to take the dog to work. Boarders will need to be available at home between 9am and 10am and between 4pm and 5pm for a member of staff to pick up and drop off the dog. Lesley and Nick Gilbert have been volunteer boarders for over three years during which time they have boarded five dogs. Lesley said: "We are so used to having a dog around now. We both love dogs and by boarding we can have the benefit of having a dog around in the evenings and weekends without worrying about what to do with the dog in the day time. "When there is no dog in the house, we wonder what the dog is doing and if it's getting on okay in its training with its new owner. "We are then very excited when we get a phone call two weeks in to the training to say that the dog is doing well. "People often say we are very good to volunteer to board the dogs, but we don't see it like that at all. It is a pleasure having an obedient, generally well behaved and well trained dog around, with no cost other than TLC and having to say goodbye. "We get a lot back from it, and it's a bonus that we are helping out Guide Dogs in the process. We have lovely memories of all of the dogs we have boarded." The charity supplies basic equipment and covers all veterinary and feeding expenses. Advice is also given regarding handling skills, basic first aid and the general care and welfare of the dog. Consistent support is available from a friendly team of specialist Guide Dogs staff.
