Widespread moderate to heavy rain has affected Singapore since early this morning (16 Jan 2001). Up to 10 am today, between 70 and 162 mm of rain have been recorded at five meteorological stations in Changi, Paya Lebar, Tengah, Sembawang and Seletar.
The widespread moderate to heavy rain, which was caused by a strong surge of northeast monsoon winds in the region, is expected to last for the next 1-2 days. Thereafter, the situation is likely to improve with mostly afternoon and early evening showers.
No flooding incidents were reported on 16 Jan 2001 except for localised ponding of some roads. However, ENV would like to caution that floods could still occur should the extreme weather coincide with high tide. The flood risk is highest in the low-lying parts of Singapore where the ground levels are barely above the high tide level. The list of low- lying areas is given in Annex 1.
ENV would like to advise shopowners and residents in low-lying areas to take precautionary measures to protect their belongings.
The times of high tides for the next four days are:
Date Time of High Tide Tide Level 16 Jan 2001 4 pm 2.7 m 17 Jan 2001 5 am 5:10 pm 2.5 m 2.4 m 18 Jan 2001 5:50 am 6:50 pm 2.5 m 2.2 m 19 Jan 2001 6:45 am 8:45 pm 2.4 m 2.1 m
Since November last year, ENV has increased its frequency of cleansing of drains and canals in flood-prone areas and will continue to conduct more checks to ensure that the drains and canals are not obstructed. The public can also help by calling ENV's Call Centre should they see any obstructions in drains. The number to call is 1800-7319222 (toll-free).
Members of the public can obtain the latest updates of the weather from MSS's 24-hr hotline at 542 7788.
