Flu Vaccine 2020/2021

Prescott Surgery

01939 260210

Prescriptions: Each year the NHS prepares for the unpredictability of flu. For most healthy people, flu is an unpleasant but usually self-limiting disease with recovery generally within a week. 01939 261403 However, there is a particular risk of severe illness from catching flu for:

Prescottsurgery.co. • older people uk • the very young • pregnant women • those with underlying disease, such as chronic respiratory or cardiac disease • those who are immunosuppressed

This year you are also recommended to have the flu vaccine if you are:

• people aged 65 and over (including those becoming 65 years by 31 March 2021) • all those people age 6 months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups – including those officially classified as required to shield during the Covid-19 pandemic • all pregnant women (including those who become pregnant during flu season) • the main carer of an older or disabled person • a child aged 2 to 11 years old (but not 12 years or older) on 31 August 2020. • Children age 2 to 4 will be offered a Flu vaccine at Prescott Surgery.

Children age 5+ are to be vaccinated by a School Nurse. • people living in long-stay residential care homes or other long-stay care facilities

• all frontline health and social care workers

In addition the NHS is extending the programme in November and December to include 50-64 year old age group subject to vaccine supply. Also, vaccines will be given this year to household members of someone on the Shielded Patients List for COVID-19 and immunocompromised individuals

The extension is being phased to allow those in the risk groups to have the vaccine first.

Flu Process at Prescott Surgery – What to Expect as a Patient

In the next few weeks Prescott Surgery will be communicating our plans for the 2020/2021 Flu campaign. It is important you look out for information in the surgery providing the dates of the Flu clinics, which will run from September onwards.

This year it is necessary for the surgery to manage our clinics differently in order to adhere to social distancing and to ensure that we keep all staff and patients safe. As a result it is likely you will be asked to do the following:

• Once you have booked an appointment, please do not arrive too early as you will be required to queue outside the surgery building and use the front reception doors to enter • The surgery will be operating a strict social distancing policy • Please check your temperature is normal (between 36.5C – 37.0C). If your temperature is higher please call the surgery before attending an appointment. If you are unwell on the day of your appointment please ring the surgery (Mon to Fri) • Dress appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions at the time • Wear clothing that enable the nurse to easily vaccinate you such as a short sleeve shirt/t shirt or lose jumper • Please wear a face mask • Please sanitise your hands using the dispensers provided • Access to the surgery building will be ‘one-way’ coming in through the front entrance of the building and exiting out via a rear side door exit onto the car park (you will be directed on the day) • Please note that the Flu vaccine will be released to Prescott Surgery in stages in order to manage availability

The new 50-64 year cohort group

Please note that people in the 50-64 year old age group will not be vaccinated until November and/or December. This is to ensure that there are sufficient vaccines available and no appointments will be offered to patients in this group until then. This decision has been made by the Department of Health and Social Care to ensure that those who are most ‘at risk’ are vaccinated first i.e. those patients over 65 and those who are 18 to 64 AND suffer with a chronic health condition. If you are aged 50 to 64 and your chronic health condition means that you are in one of these groups, which is eligible for a Flu vaccine, then you will be eligible to have the vaccine earlier than November.
