LONE STAR CONFERENCE TENNIS WEEKLY RELEASE May 1, 2019

LSC TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP The Cameron men and Angelo State women captured the Lone Star Conference titles to earn the top seeds heading into this week’s tennis championship. CU was a perfect 3-0 in conference play on the men’s side to pick up its fourth LSC crown, while the ASU women finished undefeated at 6-0 to earn their first league title. TENNIS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK MEN’S Vinicius Santos, , SR, Business Administration, Sao Paulo, Brazil Santos helped the Aggie men clinch the Lone Star Conference regular season title with a win over MSU Texas last Thursday. The senior, who is ranked No. 8 by the ITA in singles, took down No. 2 Angel Palacios 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, one of four singles wins for the Black and Gold. He and doubles partner Julen Gutierrez also defeated the No. 15 ranked pairing of Ben Westwick and Alberto Diaz 7-6 to help CU sweep doubles play over the Mustangs. Santos finished the regular season with a 13-4 singles record, going 4-1 against nationally ranked opponents, and a 15-4 doubles record. He has not lost a match since March 1 against St. Mary's No. 1 doubles team.

WOMEN’S Rebeka Velasova, Cameron University, SR, English, Bern, Switzerland Velasova secured a key win in the Aggie women's tennis team's upset over No. 12 MSU Texas last Thursday. The senior came back from an early deficit in set one to win 7-6, 6-1 over the No. 59 ranked Greta Lazzarotto, securing one of CU's four singles wins. Velasova closed out the regular season with back-to-back singles wins, a 10-12 singles record, and a 10-9 doubles mark.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS Alex Martinez Roca, Midwestern State University, became the first player in Midwestern State history with consecutive 20-win singles campaigns and the Castelldefels, Spain, native accomplished the feat as just a sophomore. He knocked off Cameron's Mritunjay Badola, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 flight in the Mustangs 5-2 loss to the Aggies. At 20-2 this season, Martinez Roca owns the best singles winning percentage in single-season history for MSU Texas and is four wins away from matching the single-season record. Casie Curry, Midwestern State University, combined for a win in singles and doubles as Midwestern State lost a 4-3 decision to Cameron last Thursday. The freshman defeated Melany Opolz in singles at the No. 5 flight for her ninth- straight win and has not dropped a set since March 24. The ITA's 60th-ranked singles player improved to 16-1 on the year. In doubles, Curry partnered with senior Greta Lazzarotto to sweep the doubles competition. The pair defeated Sarah Frendo and Sara Petric at the No. 2 flight 7-5.

Cameron The Cameron tennis program came away with a pair of big wins over rival MSU Texas last Thursday to close out the regular season. The CU men clinched the Lone Star Conference regular season title with a 5-2 win over MSU, while the Aggie women upset the No. 12 ranked Mustangs 4-3 thanks to big singles wins from Sarah Frendo, Rebeka Velasova, Alisa Savina, and Sara Petric.
