The GBHS Drama Department introduced an American classic to its own generation, while rekindling memories for the previous one with their two-night showing of Footloose, The Musical, Friday and Saturday at the Saenger Theatre in Pensacola. The screenplay, taken from a book by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie, adapted from the classic 1984 movie that made Kevin Bacon a household name, centers around Bacon’s character Ren McCormick and his aunt’s Ethel (played by Victoria Gluchoski) move from the big city (Chicago) to Bomont. Ren, played by Fenn Reeder, Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News has trouble at first fitting in to Sophomores Kendall Parrett and Fenn Reeder played the lead characters Ariel and Ren small town life, clashing with, and performed a duet of “Almost Paradise.” among others, Rev. Shaw Moore (played by Thomas Vassiliades) and Chuck (played by David Carbaugh). Ren’s attraction to Chuck’s girlfriend/Rev. Moore’s daughter Ariel (played by Kendall Parrett) only makes matters worse. The musical brought to life nearly every song on the original soundtrack, which spawned two number one hits, six top 40 hits and sold 10 million copies worldwide. One of those number ones was the title song, performed at the beginning and the end of the two-hour plus long musical. The other number one, Deniece Williams’ “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” was performed brilliantly by senior Alexa McKnight. She played Rusty in the show and her scenes with Marc Wakim’s character Willard were among the most memorable. Ironically, those two characters helped launch the careers of Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Penn Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News nearly 30 years ago. Junior Thomas Vassiliades portrayed Rev.
