Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In Saint Pope John Paul II’s spiritual testimony Novo Millennio Ineunte, “At the Close of the Great Jubilee Year 2000,” he writes that “our Christian communities (parishes), must become schools of prayer.” These schools of prayer teaches us to fall in love with Christ. In every season of the year, our parish, our school of prayer offers abundantly opportunities to contemplate the “face of Christ” until our hearts “fall in love.” These coming weeks are no exception.

On Saturday, September 14th, our parish will host a young Catholic Evangelist, Max Ford. Max will be presenting the “Set the Captives Free Workshop” from 9:00am to 3:30pm in Saint Mary School. Max currently lives in France, grew up in England, spent time in America and now travels the world bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit to young and old alike. Max was here at Saint Mary’s in February as a speaker for the Catholic Men for Jesus Christ Conference. At the Conference, Max lead a healing service when many of the men present experienced miraculous healings. Max is truly an anointed young man. This “Set the Captives Free Workshop” promises to be a very anointed event – healings, encounters with the Lord and dynamic teachings! To register for the workshop, please visit the webpage www.DOTCCR.org or call the parish office at 732-671-0071, ext. 221.

It only seems appropriate that we conclude the “Set the Captives Free Workshop” with a special Healing Mass that will be celebrated in Saint Mary Chapel at 4:00pm. At the end of the Mass, Max and myself will lead a Healing service. This Healing Mass will meet the Sunday obligation for Catholics and is open to everyone, not just those who attended the workshop.

On Friday evening, September 13th at 7:30 p.m. in Saint Mary Chapel, Max will lead an XLT for Life Teen and Young Adults. XLT is a special night to experience Eucharistic Adoration for teens and young adults. The night begins with Max Ford sharing his experiences in faith especially in relationship to the Eucharist. It is followed by Eucharistic Adoration which is accompanied with praise and worship music. All teens and young adults are invited. Parents please invite all teens and young adults in your family to the XLT.

Also this week, the “Tuesday Morning Rosary” returns in the Bulman Center at 8:00am to pray and intercede for the students, faculty and staff of Saint Mary School. All parents are invited to drop your children off at school and come pray the Rosary. That Man Is You! (TMIY!) begins on Saturday morning at 6:30am in Saint Mary School Cafeteria. All men are encouraged to attend.

Next week the Women’s Discipleship Group returns on Monday, September 16th and a new Prayer Meeting begins on Wednesday, September 18th. All are invited to attend these encounters with the Lord at Saint Mary’s “school of prayer.”

Have a blessed week!

In Jesus and Mary,

Father Jeff Kegley Pastor

2 : Be open to the surprises of the Holy Spirit

In his homily Thursday Pope Francis stressed the need to be open to the novelty of the Holy Spirit, by discerning new movements and directions without being immediately closed off from them.

Francis asked Mass goers at the Santa Marta chapel how the Church responds when faced with something new, and perhaps never done before, clarifying that this is “not worldly newness, like fashions and clothes, but the newness and surprises of the Spirit, because the Spirit always surprises us.”

The answer, he said, is “by meeting, listening, discussing and praying before the final decision.” This is the same method the Church has used since the beginning, and is how she answers resistance based on assertions such as“ it was never done this way,” or “you must do it like this.”

This process of gathering to speak and pray about an issue is “the so-called synodality of the Church, in which the communion of the Church is expressed,” Francis observed, noting that it is the Holy Spirit who creates this communion.

“What does the Lord ask of us? Docility to the Spirit. What does the Lord ask us? Not to be afraid, when we see that it’s the Spirit who calls us,” he said.

He focused his homily on the passage from the day’s first reading in Acts 15, which recounts the Council of Jerusalem. It was the first meeting in which the disciples discussed whether or not the Church ought to impose Mosaic Law, including circumcision, on pagan converts.

In his homily, the Pope said that it was the Holy Spirit who was “the protagonist” from the beginning. “It’s the Spirit who does everything, who carries the Church forward, (even) with her problems” and when persecution breaks out, he added.

The Holy Spirit is also the one who gives believers strength to remain in the faith, even in times “of resistance and fury from the doctors of the law.” Francis noted that in the case of the Council of Jerusalem, there was a double resistance to the Spirit’s work: that of those who believed that “Jesus came only for the chosen people” and that of those who wanted to impose the Mosaic Law on pagan converts.

“There was a great confusion over this,” he said, explaining that the Holy Spirit put their hearts “on a new path: they were surprised by the Spirit.” Suddenly the apostles “found themselves in situations that they would have never believed … the Spirit brought a certain novelty, certain things that were never done. Never. Neither were they imagined. That the pagans would receive the Holy Spirit, for example.”

“(They) had a hot potato in their hands and they didn’t know what to do,” Francis continued, noting how the apostles were able to resolve the issue by gathering to discuss it. He pointed to how at one point the entire assembly fell silent in order to listen to the testimony of Paul and Barnabas, who recounted the signs and works God had done in and among the nations. Francis stressed the importance of listening, explaining that when a person is afraid to listen, “they do not have the Spirit in their heart.”

It’s also important to listen “with humility,” the Pope added, noting how it was only after they listened to Paul and Barnabas that the Church decided the pagan converts weren’t obliged to undergo circumcision. This decision was communicated though a letter, but “the protagonist is the Holy Spirit,” he said. Just as he did for St. Paul and Barnabas, the Spirit stops us and redirects our path, giving us the patience and courage to walk along the path of Jesus and to be strong in the face of martyrdom, he said.

Pope Francis concluded his homily by for the grace to understand how the Church moves forward, to be open to “the surprises of the Spirit,” and for each person “to have the grace of docility to the Spirit, to go along the path that the Lord Jesus wants for each one of us and for the entire Church.”

8 State of the Parish

The following is an update on the condition of the parish. St. Mary’s parish has a rich tradition of providing many programs and services to the parishioners and community. We are fortunate to have a beautiful campus that houses two schools, two preschools, a chapel and church. A campus of this size requires constant upkeep, and has been evident over the past two years, sometimes emergency repairs. The inside of our historical Chapel had many renovations that were completed by devoted volunteers. We saved over $90,000 because of their dedication and commitment. However, it became necessary to hire professional contractors to replace the leaking Chapel roof, pave the parking lot, and restore the exterior molding around our beloved stained-glass windows. We are currently building a first-floor bathroom to meet the needs of our elderly and handicapped parishioners that cannot navigate the stairs to the basement facility. Our Mary Mother of God Church was not without its own issues. We recently replaced all the lights in the Church and in the outside parking lot that had gone dark. Upon inspection, we were informed that one of the heating units will require replacement very soon. There are also water leaks in the Church, and the parking lot is in desperate need of repair.

Completed or in the process of being completed Lights in Mary, Mother of God $72,865 MMGC & Chapel parking lot lighting $19,665 Chapel Parking lot Paving $74,858 Roof at the Chapel $29,925 Replacing molding at Chapel $84,300 Total $281,613

Estimates on needed repairs - future/present Heating unit $28,000 Parking lot repairs main Church $80,000 Roof leak main Church $26,000 Bathroom at Chapel $12,000 Emergency repairs (based on last 3 years) $16,000 Total $162,000

Our weekly collections are not sufficient to cover these expenses nor were they used to pay for completed repairs. We are offering parishioners an opportunity to ADOPT a PEW to pay for these extraordinary repairs. The pew will be in either Mary, Mother of God Church or in the Chapel. You will have the option of choosing the pew and its location. The cost is $1,000. You may pay by installments and upon completion of the payment plan, the plate will be mounted on both ends of the pew. Thank you for your generosity. God Bless You, Hank Pekarsky - Business Manager

Please consider this opportunity to honor your loved ones while preserving the beauty of our Parish.

RIGHT TO LIFE

Through him all things came into existence.

Humanae Vitae is much more than a “birth control” . It declares and reaffirms the very meaning of human life as a sacred gift from God. We find our fulfillment precisely in welcoming, nurturing, and giving ourselves away for that gift of life. By capturing this vision of life, prohibitions on abortion and contraception make sense as pieces of a greater picture.

Prayer: Jesus,4 you fill the world with life. Take away our fear and make us fruitful.
