VISIT TO THE BATTLEFIELDS OF THE SOMME

On Thursday 17 March, Year 10 History students, accompanied by members of staff, visited the Great War battlefields of the Somme. They visited Lochnagar Crater, Beaumont Hamel, Thiepval and Vimy Ridge. As part of the day a ceremony was conducted at Connaught Cemetery where Private Reginald Perrott (an old Wilsonian) is buried. He died on 30 September 1916 in the later stages of the Battle of the Somme. The school hymn was read by Robert Webster and Arslan Rana with a stanza of ‘For the Fallen’ being delivered by Oliver Taylor. A wreath was then laid by Mr Charnock on behalf of the Governors, staff and students of Wilson’s in memory of all Old Wilsonians who fell in the conflict. Two minutes of silence were then observed. The ceremony ended with each boy and all accompanying staff leaving a remembrance cross on Private Perrott’s grave. The boys conducted themselves with immense dignity throughout a very long but reward- ing day. YEAR 10 DEBATING

A good number of students from Wilson’s and other schools attended and pored over his selection of critical texts in English and Classical Greek, and Mr Denyer happily answered questions afterwards.

We were pleased with the response to this inaugural lecture and are encouraged to organise a more extensive programme of visiting speakers next year. SURREY SWIMMING COMPETITION Our congratulations go to Ryan Shankar (8H) on his recent performance in the Surrey Swimming Competition. He gained 2 silver medals (1500 front crawl, 4* 50 meter relay) and 2 bronze medals (400meter individual medley and 200 meter butterfly)

NATIONAL CIPHER CHALLENGE

Wilson’s has a raft of budding code breakers. This was shown by their great performances in the National Cipher Challenge. Teams of pupils tackled the challenges each week during the Autumn term. Two Wilson’s groups solved all the challenges and were ranked amongst the best in the country. One group, of Victor Mikh- no and Oliver Myerscough in the upper sixth, used a combination of their maths, computing and problem solving skills to come 9th in coun- try. Because of this outstanding performance they were invited to the national prize giving at Bletchley Park, the hub of the national code breaking team in the second World War. It was here that the world’s first electronic computer was developed, but in such secrecy that no one knew for 50 years.

Next year’s National Cipher Challenge is already being developed and it hoped that even more teams from Wilson’s will tackle the problems when it is launched in September. Issue 186 April 8, 2011

Rugby Shows Great Strides with Wasps & Wilson’s Combo

Wilson’s Rugby has improved hugely over the past season and numbers have almost doubled in terms of representing the school or simply training during lunch time and after school. The introduction of a new playing shirt for Year 9 and 10 (intermediate) and Year 11 and Sixth Form (senior) along with water proof training tops for warm ups has helped in improving the professionalism of the sport within the school and amongst other schools.

All age groups have achieved success and for the first time in the history of the school Wilson’s now has a Year 7 team. The team narrowly missed out on reaching the knock out stages and there is potential for them to certainly compete in years to come. Robert Cooke has been an inspirational leader for the team and along with regulars such as Sam Kinch, Alex Kelly, Adam Mackenzie and Julian Ford; the team has the foundations to strive for success next season.

The Year 8 Team were narrowly defeated in their playoff game, but have shown glimpses of excellence, with Harry Wright dictating play and fly half. Other regulars include Murdo Hepburn, Harry Tee, Alex Storey, Tim Mash and Aditya Doshi, who have all put in memorable performances.

The Year 9 Team have grown from strength to strength since only starting last year. Early results earned them the right to represent Surrey in the Under 14 State School Competition where they finished a respectable 6th out of eight. The boys battled but unfortunately came off second best in the Quarter Finals of the Plate Competition but have come a long way since their first game. Marcus Christie and Jake Field have been exceptional this year, along with Dominic Wil- son and Daniel Skinner in the back line and ever present Harry Rogers driving on the forwards with the awesome duo of Abisegan Sivakumar and Ravi Yaathavan.

The Year 10 Team achieved a clean sweep of 6 wins out of 6 in the group stages but came unstuck in the Quarter Finals of the Cup. Again, Rob Webster and Chris Mallet led the back line, with Matt Jacoutot stepping in at fly half and doing a tremendous job. Karim Abu-Seer, Rory McNevin, Archie Williams, Joe Perry and Cameron Clark have all improved over the season and have all contributed to the success of the team.

The Year 11 Team again achieved some great success this year with a big win over Box Hill and a closely fought victory over Raynes Park. Sam Giles has carried a lot of ball and has become the Penalty taking master, whether it be kicking to touch or tapping and going. Peter Atkinson, Marcus Bird and Adam Drew have also put in huge performances and with- out people like Matt Brown, Owen Wright and Andre Woolgar, the team would not be able to function.

The 6th Form Team made up of Year 12 and 13 have also achieved success against Box Hill and Sutton Grammar and have improved with every game. Tobia Charles has been excellent in leading the back line, along with recent addition Peter Bennett. Sam Ajayi has added a lot of speed and aggression to the team and tenacious Tom Grimes has improved at full back. In the forwards, Henry Kyriacou and Tommy Graham have been regulars in the front row, Josh Giles has been excellent in the 2nd Row and Guy Morgan and Jack Di Lizia have been superb in the back row.

The school have also been able to purchase a state of the art scrummage machine which has been a great addition. All age groups have been able to use the machine and especially at the higher end of the school, the practice has helped massively. Rugby is a growing sport at the school and the season wouldn’t have been as big a success without the help of Mr Stradwick. Mr Stradwick has joined the school as an external coach through the community link with London Wasps. Mr Stradwick has provided excellent advice to the boys and all teams have been able to experienece his coach- ing during lessons and after school, as well as during match days.

Next year, both Under 15s and Under 18s will compete in the Daily Mail Cup. This is an excellent opportunity for the boys to compete on a national level. Other age groups will continue to compete in the local leagues and soon all age groups will be making the knock stages on a regular basis. The futures’ bright, the future’s Rugby!!!!!
