Many of you will have been glued to television over the summer months, watching the Olympic games from London, and been enthralled and excited by the many sports involved – some of which you might follow through the year, and others you might have watched for the first time this year. Even those who were most cynical about the games coming to London must surely now agree what a triumph the whole event was, from the opening ceremony, to the organisation during the games, the games makers who volunteered to help over the fortnight, not to mention the medals won by our own team as well as the many others taking part. Many people have spoken of a twinge of sadness now that the games have ended – and a reluctant admission that now they must get on with the tasks they put off while the Olympics were on.

This month sees the beginning of the Paralympics, also from London, and if we thought Ussain Bolt and Andy Murray and Mo Farah and Katherine Grainger gave their all at the Olympics, the Paralym- pics will surely touch even the hardest of hearts, as sportsmen and women carrying varying disabili- ties take to the saddle, the pool and the track to compete at the highest level. When we hear sto- ries of children born with limbs missing, of rising stars permanently injured in accidents, of people others might have dismissed as ‘handicapped’ all overcoming prejudice and limitations to nurture times and talents way above what might have been achieved by many able bodied people, the Para- lympics becomes even more of a celebration of human life and achievement than the Olympics. Regardless of the fact that Britain’s medal hopes are high, the Paralympics allows us to see the human body at its most determined, most talent- ed, most deserving, and if there were tears shed in your house at the various golds won by Hoy, Brownlee and Ennis, there will surely be many more shed at the achievements of Jody Cundy, Oscar Pistorius and many more.

Jesus said he had come to bring life in all its fullness. It doesn’t take much for us to be put off by life’s challenges, to shrug our shoulders and say it will never work, or could never be done, yet it al- so takes the courage and determination of just a few people to encourage others to try, and try again. Whether we overcome disabilities to reach new goals, or simply try something new, and have the faith to live life to the fullest, we know that we do so in the company of Christ, who offers us life, and all that it contains.

Best wishes,

During the summer holiday period a major development has been undertaken in the High Street Hall. The old kitchen area has been divided into three parts as follows:

There is now a new kitchen with new worktops and cupboards, two sinks with draining boards, a sep- arate hand basin and a new electric cooker.

We have created an area for the cleaner with a sink for her use and cupboard space for brushes, mops, etc.

There is now a small office/meeting room which can be used for private meetings or small commit- tee meetings.

The floor has been sanded down and the whole area has been redecorated.

This has completely changed that part of the High Street Hall and makes good use of the whole space available.

Why not come in and have a look when you are having your tea or coffee after the morning service.

8 Chris Holmes 1944 - 2012

In the last magazine I reported on Chris’s retirement party at Gogar Cabinetworks. Very sadly Chris died some weeks later and I attended his funeral at on 20th June. There was a most moving humanist service in the main chapel packed with friends and family. The exit music was “Gracias a la Vida”. I have abridged Chris’s wife, Freda’s tribute honouring his re- markable life:

Chris was born in Halifax on 28th December 1944 to his proud parents Mary and John Holmes. They delighted in his success at school, firstly at Queens Road Primary, at Heath Grammar School and eventually gaining entry to university. As a young boy Chris, following in this father’s footsteps, de- veloped a love of cycling, roaming free and many happy hours and days were spent cycling his beloved Yorkshire and further afield. His love of cycling and his passion for the Tour de France and vintage bikes remained with him for the rest of his life.

While at Manchester University studying maths and philosophy Chris married Christine who he had met in the jazz club in Halifax prior to going to University. Chris had many adventures during this time and loved climbing, hill walking and generally enjoying the great outdoors. He was a keen rugby player and cricketer. After Manchester Chris and Christine moved to Brighton to enable him to at- tend the University of Sussex and undertake a MSC in experimental psychology. In 1966 his beloved daughter Ruth was born.

The Scottish phase of Chris’s life began when he moved with his family to Edinburgh in 1967 to do a PhD in Psycholinguistics. Chris was based in the Psychology Department till 1973 when he secured a part time job in the Architecture Department in computer-aided design. He started making furniture part time, using facilities at the University and then setting up his own workshop in the basement of his house in Chessels Court. A life changing moment indeed. Working with his beautiful Scottish hardwoods brought him tremendous pleasure. Chris loved wood and sculpted, shaped and moulded it into creations that will be a lasting legacy and a treasure to those lucky enough to own them.

Chris’s mother had always been a bit disappointed when he gave up his academic career. She felt he should have a proper job and would dearly have loved him to have been a minister. He did indeed end up with his own church - his Shangri-La workshop at Gogar which houses a superb collection of clas- sic British woodworking machines. Chris was a perfectionist. His patience and persistence with his craft inspired many. His teaching and mentoring of young furniture makers was appreciated by those privileged enough to know that Chris felt they were worth spending time with. They took on board his advice - “Keep your wood as long as you can as long as you can” - and smiled wryly at “Chris compli- ments” such as “I’ve seen worse!”

Chris’s personal life was rich indeed. In 1990 his son Adam was born followed by the birth of Cathe- rine in 1992. Also he has a grand-daughter, Rhianna (Ruth’s child). He loved his family and extended families dearly and took much pleasure in their achievements and in the fact they all grew up to be truly good human beings. He leaves them with many happy memories. A chance meeting at a millenni- um ‘do’ reconnected Chris with Freda and in 2007 they married and were blissfully happy sharing their small house in Edinburgh with the very large dog Eddie.

9

Sadly the future that was anticipated was not to be and Chris knew that ‘one day soon the moon would come round and find him gone’. In the last weeks of his life Chris hosted a retirement bash at his workshop and felt honoured, privileged and humbled by the many friends who turned up. Chris was an honest man with heaps of integrity. His wisdom, kind- ness, generosity and what some might call his sense of humour was ap- preciated by many and the turnout is testimony to how loved and re- spected Chris was as a human being. He faced death with dignity and felt grateful for the life that had given him so much and died on 7th June 2012.

Also I have been in contact with Chris Scotland, who is taking over the lease of our Gogar Church building, He met Chris Holmes in the early 1980’s when they were part of a group of woodmakers called Scottish Artisans in Wood, or SAW! In his tribute on behalf of the Scottish Furniture Makers Association he thanked Chris Holmes “for his warmth and strictness, his encouragement, loyalty, sincerity, and thoroughness.” He further said that it was “no acci- dent Chris chose to drive a Saab—his motoring equivalent in solidity, reliability and understated performance. The turbo was always in the twinkle in his eye!”

Gogar Cabinetworks has very successfully nurtured craft skills and creativity over the past thir- ty years. Chris Scotland has been based at Gogar from 1989 and it is excellent that the Cabi- networks will live on under his care and guidance.
