Action Organic is supported by Defra’s Environmental Action Fund quality of life for all Registered charity number 206862 Welcome to your guide to fresh, local organic food and drink produced in Yorkshire and Humber compiled by the Yorkshire Organic Centre

This area has a rich heritage of food and farming that has shaped the landscape and the economy. Buying locally produced food helps to support the producers in the region, maintaining a well established rural way of life. It gives the economy a much needed boost by keeping money within the community, sustaining local businesses and creating jobs for people who live in the area.

Food that is grown closer to us has travelled less distance to reach us – this means less environmental pollution. Locally produced food can also be fresher, healthier and more nutritious having been spared lengthy periods of storage, chilling and travel. And culturally, local organic food has its own ‘story’, bringing a shared meaning at mealtimes and a deeper connection to the land.

Organic crops, fruit and vegetables are produced without the use of unnecessary artificial pesticides or weed-killers benefiting your health and the environment. Animal welfare is paramount on organic farms where animals are free range and the routine use of antibiotics and vaccines is not permitted. Even organic processed food is different – hydrogenated fat and artificial flavourings and sweeteners are banned along with other food additives that may be harmful to your health. In addition, organic standards prohibit the use of genetically modified ingredients in food, as well as in animal feed.

We hope you enjoy using this directory to explore the delicious local organic food widely available throughout the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Please note: This regional list was put together by the Yorkshire Organic Centre in conjunction with Clive Litchfield, editor of the Organic Directory. Not all entries are certified as organic. The Yorkshire Organic Centre cannot be held responsible for any claims made as to the quality of the produce or goods offered.
