SCSU’s Dowd Named a Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick Finalist St. Cloud State senior captain one of three up for college hockey’s top honor

t. Cloud State senior forward Nic Dowd was named one of three finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award, be- Sstowed upon college hockey’s top player, as the Hobey Hat Trick was announced Wednesday morning, April 2 by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation. Joining Dowd among the Hobey Hat Trick finalists are St. Lawrence senior forward Greg Carey and Boston College junior forward . Dowd’s selection marks the second straight year a Husky has been chosen for the Hobey Hat Trick after Dowd’s former teammate, Drew LeBlanc, became the first St. Cloud State player to win the Hobey Baker Award last year. Dowd, a team captain for the Huskies, led SCSU to the inaugural Penrose Cup and NCHC regular-season title while compiling 40 points in 38 games. The prospect, who signed with L.A. on Tuesday, notched 22 goals to tie for seventh nation- ally and rank second in the NCHC, while handing out 18 assists. A First-Team All-NCHC selection, Dowd scored 10 of his goals on the power play to lead the NCHC and tie for fifth nationally, while adding two more short-handed and notching five game-winners to tie for second in the NCHC. His final game-winner came in the first round of this year’s NCAA Tournament as he scored in overtime to lift SCSU past Notre Dame and into the West Regional final. Along with earning all-conference honors, Dowd was named NCHC Defensive Forward of the Year and NCHC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while being a finalist for NCHC Player of the Year and Forward of the Year. The Huntsville, Ala., native became the first player from the state of Alabama to be a Hobey Hat Trick finalist. Dowd compiled a +17 rating, which was second in the NCHC, while anchoring SCSU’s top power play and kill units. Dowd also blocked 32 shots on the season, while compiling 12 multi-point games and two multi- games on the year. In conference play his 13 goals tied for second in the NCHC. Dowd was exceptional off the ice as well, carrying a 3.61 grade-point average while majoring in bio-medical science. Along with NCHC Schol- ar-Athlete of the Year, he garnered NCHC Academic All-Conference and NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team accolades. Dowd has served on the school’s Stu- dent-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and also volunteered his time at the local Humane Society, while he donated his hair to Locks of Love following his junior campaign, along with four other teammates, as he organized the donation. Dowd was a candidate for the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award as well. The three finalists were chosen from the list of Top Ten candidates, which also included Omaha junior forward , by the 27-mem- ber Selection Committee and an additional round of online fan balloting to determine this year’s Hobey Baker Award winner. Criteria for the award includes: displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements. This year’s Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced Friday, April 11 from the Loews Hotel Millennium Ballroom in Philadelphia, Pa. during the NCAA Frozen Four weekend. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff Format NCHC Frozen Faceoff and Tournament Champions

he NCHC Tournament consisted of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 14-16). The T four higher seeds hosted the four lower seeds in a best two-out- of-three format. Seed #1 hosted Seed #8, Seed #2 hosted Seed #7, Seed #3 hosted Seed #6, and Seed #4 hosted Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Tar- get Center in Minneapolis for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 21. (Semifinal games were reseeded based on the final regular-season standings). The winners of the two semifinal games then met in the Championship Game on Saturday, March 22, which was won by Denver, for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the two losers from the semifinal games faced each other in the third-place game earlier in the day. A completed bracket is on page 4.
