News Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize Gill Hague was awarded a Special Award, for life-time achievement in combating work, in November by the Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize. This is the only prize of its type in the UK and was set up to remember the life of Emma Humphreys. Gill was one of the two founders, with Ellen Malos, of the Centre for Gender and Violence Research (previously the Violence Against Women Research Group) at the University of Bristol, 23 years ago, and has worked in the field in Bristol and also nationally and internationally for about 40 years. Compulsory Sex Education Rejected by Peers An attempt to introduce age-appropriate compulsory sex education in state-funded schools has been rebuffed by peers. An amendment introducing sex education - including information about sexual relationships, same-sex relationships, , and consent - as a foundation curriculum subject was voted down by 209 to 142.See http://www.bbc.co.uk/democracylive/house-of-lords-25934084

Bristol Rise and One Billion Rising to stop violence against women; Over February 14th and 15th, Bristol Rise is running a series of events to raise awareness of the 1 in 3 women around the world who will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. Bristol Rise joins the global One Billion Rising campaign to raise awareness of the 1 in 3 women who will be beaten or raped in her lifetime. A flashmob will be held on February 14th and a community day will be held at Trinity Centre on February 15th. Conference: Women and Alcohol: Different Perspectives, Monday, February 17th at the Radisson Blu, Broad Quay, from 9.30 a.m-4.30 pm; Conference for alcohol and health professionals and the voluntary and independent sector, interested in sharing expertise, and hearing from other professionals and service users. The aim of this conference is to raise awareness, in Bristol and further afield, of the many factors that influence women’s alcohol misuse; and to find out about different approaches to supporting women to address these issues. SARSAS Launch event, Friday 7th March, 9.45-12pm, Exchange House, Taunton: Somerset and Avon and Sexual Abuse Support – SARSAS (formerly Bristol Rape Crisis) is a new specialist support service for women and girls who have experienced rape or any kind of or abuse at any time in their lives. They are officially launching their services into Somerset, North Somerset, B&NES and South Gloucestershire.

Independent Domestic Violence Advisers, North Somerset Council; The service will employ at least 2 full-time equivalent IDVAs to work throughout the district to support high-risk victims, both male and female.. BAVA Training: Understanding Domestic Violence and Abuse, February 11th, The Gatehouse Centre This free training is an introduction to the subject, and will explore definitions of domestic violence and abuse, its impact on victims and survivors, and the role of professionals in providing support. How to Risk Assess DVA (Domestic Violence and abuse) and the MARAC (Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conference) process This course aims to equip professionals to speak to clients about domestic violence and abuse and enable them to risk assess the situation effectively. It will outline support services available to clients, including how to refer high risk clients to the MARAC and the purpose of this process. It is being delivered four times a year at Princess House, Princess Street, Bedminster from 9.30am – 12.30. Next Date: 10th February 2014

Rape & Sexual Assault: Responding to Disclosures, The Bridge, 25th February 6.20 – 8.30pm Does your job mean that someone might tell you they have been raped or sexually assaulted? Do you know what to do in the situation? Would you like to know how to make sure they receive the best possible care and advice? This FREE 2 hour training session is designed for doctors, nurses, health visitors, and other health and social care professionals.

CAADA: „Train the Trainer‟, Baldwin Street, Thurs 20th and Fri 21st March 2014 The Young People's Programme was launched to improve the local response for young people experiencing relationship. CAADA and the programme partners have created a free two day training course which is aimed at professionals who work with agencies which come into contact with young people who experiencing relationship abuse. Learners are committed to delivering at least two training sessions to groups of professionals who come into contact with young people in their local area. Sign up online.
