Keeping in touch with old friends all over the world STOGA 2014

MEET THE HEADMASTER Mike Farmer joined St. Teresa’s school in September 2012 after nine years of successful Headship at Kilgraston School in Perthshire. Beginning his teaching career at Godolphin School in Salisbury, specialising in Economics, Business and ICT, Mike took up the position of Assistant Head of Headington School in Oxford in 1997. In 2003, he was appointed as the new Head of Kilgraston School in Perthshire, transforming the school to achieve the highest growth rate within its sector. In November 2011, Kilgraston gained national recognition by being named the UK Independent School of the Year. The distinguished panel of judges described the achievement in glowing terms, saying it was “an example to other schools”, with a recent inspection report highlighting the school as “sector-leading”. During his tenure at Kilgraston, Mike was also the Chair of the Scottish Girls’ Schools and a member of the Council for the Girls’ Schools Association. For the last six years he has been Scotland’s representative for the GSA boarding committee, and will continue as a non-regional member. He has also played an active role in the International Network of the Sacred Heart and represented Scotland and Ireland as a member of the European Core Team of Heads. The Network has kindly asked him to continue as an Honorary Member. Mike has joined the Boarding Schools Association as executive representing girls’ schools. Mike joined St. Teresa’s with his wife, Mary-Ann, who held the position of Head of Kilgraston’s Senior Boarding House, and they have two grown up children. Their daughter, Charlotte, read theoretical physics at St Andrews before going on to study education at Oxford and is now teaching physics at Caterham. In contrast, their son, William, is more of a thespian, and works for a top talent agency United in London, after graduating from Royal Holloway in Management with Marketing.

2 WELCOME! STOGA 2014 Welcome TO THE NEW STOGA NEWSLETTER

I have been working in the Marketing Department at St Teresa’s for almost 10 years and have recently taken over the management of the Old Girls’ Association from within the school. The aim of the association is to reunite and rekindle old friendships, to keep our girls in touch with one another and to use the strength in our connections to better the school and the careers of our girls.

After 20 years on the Stoga committee and 10 as Chairman, Lindy Williams indicated her desire to step down some time ago. Additionally, Jill Trevor stepped down as Treasurer and Membership Secretary two years ago after 10 years. In the interim Lindy and Jill continued to support the Association together with Marion Corrigan, Pauline Lubbock and Sister Carmel. In the absence of new committee members coming forward they consulted widely and explored many options about how best to maintain and strengthen ties with you all, ensure the Association can fl ourish, and that everyone can be more involved. After consulting with Mr Farmer, the new Headmaster, a decision was made to bring the running of the association in house where it could benefi t from the technology and facilities available here at the school. We decided to scrap the subscription fees and bring STOGA up to date using the alumnae section of the school website PLEASE and social media to connect with old girls, many of whom we had lost contact. On that note I have not got email addresses for many of you and I would be very UPDATE grateful if you would please send me your contact details to [email protected]. That way we will be able to alert you of any reunions we are planning for your year group or decade. YOUR DETAILS! We now have a Facebook account in the name of Teresa Effi ngham and a STOGA Facebook Page. I would encourage you to join Facebook to connect with old friends and Linkedin which is for business (if appropriate) to network Please visit: with each other. I am very excited by the new friend requests we are getting and fi ll in a daily on our Facebook and our STOGA Page and I am thrilled that so many of you are participating. STOGA MEMBERSHIP FORM We are always delighted to hear from our old girls so please keep in touch. or email [email protected] We would like to have your news to include in our next newsletter. Young Alumnae get togethers after work in London, decade and individual year group reunions and daytime walks and visits to places of interest for ex parents as well as old girls. WANTED Please keep an eye on the Alumnae section of our web site and Facebook for details of events. We will, of course, email you if we have your address and write to you if not. A huge thank you to Lindy, Jill, Marian, Sister Carmel, and the old committee DECADE REPS for all their wonderful work in the past. We are immensely grateful to them all. With best wishes We would like to recruit a representative from each decade to help us organise events. If you live locally and can spare 3 half days a year we would love to hear from you. 3 STOGA 2014 REUNIONS Reunions SUMMER REUNION JUNE 2013

On a blustery day in June, 70 ‘old girls’ returned to the school for a wonderful reunion and a real “trip down memory lane”. It was fantastic to see such a good turn out from each of the decades from the 1950’s right through to the 2000’s. Friendships were re- kindled and new ones made as the girls reunited over drinks and canapés and then toured the school to see what had changed and what hadn’t!. Many stories were swapped and the younger girls were astonished by some of the tales from the old days, such as in the 1960’s girls had to speak in French in the senior dining room and girls were allocated a number when they joined the school. They were referred to by that number and not their name during their entire time at the school. How times have changed!

13 STOGA 2014 JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS Plymouth Diocesan Pilgrimage

24th – 31st May, 2013 This year, being my Golden Jubilee, STOGA helped It also proved to be The Military Pilgrimage that weekend too. Many forces and me celebrate, giving me a bursary towards the cost countries were represented and Lourdes was full – all the different uniforms, the of going to the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in talking and singing and band-playing – quite spectacular, even though some of the thanksgiving. pilgrims didn’t sleep well for the noise. Our group was lucky as our rooms faced the side and back of the street. We had the English soldiers in our hotel, now serving in Cyprus after fi nishing a tour in Afghanistan. They were a jolly group too. As part of my thanksgiving I was able to help in The Baths each day. A wonderful experience but tiring. We began with prayers before the pilgrims came and worked in our allotted cubicles helping the pilgrims undress, go to The Bath, and dress again. There were 10 cubicles in all, including a mother and baby one, and each cubicle had 6 partitions. So 6 people helped the pilgrims and another 3 helped in The Bath area. Our schedule was either 8.15 to 12 or 1.30 until the last pilgrim between 4.30 – 5 pm. We interchanged roles but we didn’t have a break or sit down during our shift – hence feeling tired but so exhilarated – it was such a rewarding time. During our stay the weather!!!! Saturday and Sunday were warm, sunny with the odd shower (rather like the English weather) but from Monday to Friday we had torrential rain (nothing I have ever experienced even though we have lots of rain in England – as you know!!!) So we were paddling in 2” or more of rain most of the time. On Thursday – the feast of Corpus Christi – we had Mass at The Grotto joined by two Irish pilgrimages. We sat for 2 hours in the pouring rain – it was incredible, very prayerful and joyful until you had a shower on you from a tilted umbrella, that is!!! On the return journey we had a half-hour delay at the Airport due to the weather conditions. On the way to the airport we saw lots of fi elds and roadways fl ooded, and the River Gave – outside the hotel , it fl ows down the main road, The pilgrimage started on Friday, 24th at Exeter was very swollen but it was another 10 days before the devastating fl oods ----- Airport with a four hour delay! We fi nally arrived at we were so lucky to have missed it, even though we paddled most of the time our hotel – The Alba – at 8 pm, (9 pm French time,) with our umbrellas!!!!! we were ushered in quickly to have supper which they kindly had kept for us, just as well, as most of us A very big thank you to STOGA, when Lindy Williams was chairman and Marian hadn’t eaten since lunch!!!!!! So all the pilgrims were Corrigan was Treasurer, who helped make this pilgrimage possible. content and happy to have arrived safely. Sister Carmel Heller
