OCTOBER 2019 Dalgety Bay Horticultural Society’s 44th Annual Show and Farmers’ Market

It was a very successful show. The weather was lovely and stayed dry right through so that the gazebos used at the Farmers Market were put away dry. There were plenty of visitors and many compliments about the show were received. The traders at the Farmers Market seemed pleased enough, which was good for us because that means they will return next year. Once again, the Gala Committee ran a very successful tea room. It always seemed busy when I was in there. They will be asked to join us again next year. Let’s hope it will be a long and happy partnership. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped and thank you and well done to all the exhibitors. We will see you next year. Mike Gourlay Chairman DBHS

It’s a full house again so I’ll be brief. Our front page features DBHS’ Annual Show and Farmers’ Market. It was good to see it well attended and with so many stalls outside in the warm sunshine. Inside there was a wealth of home baking and home grown produce and interesting photographs on display. Congratulations to all the prize winners. Also congratulations and well done to all concerned in retaining Silver Gilt at the recent Beautiful Fife awards. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue. DALGETY BAY LADIES PROBUS CLUB The first meeting of the new session, which was very well attended, was opened by our new president, Linda Grant who introduced our guest speaker Mr Robin Barr. Apart from being LA Ambassador for Music in Hospitals & Care he is an accomplished fiddle player and has been a longstanding volunteer for the charity having received a number of awards for his work. The charity, MIHC, takes live music to a wide range of venues such as hospital wards, care homes, adult resource centres, special needs schools, stroke centres, dementia hubs and will also make bedside visits. The programme this year is expected to offer in the region of 50,000 performances across Scotland. Strict criteria must be met by those performing. All are professional musicians who have been selected by an audition panel. Good communication and therapeutic skills are looked for, and the programmes are designed to be calming, stimulating and comforting. In this a wide range of musical tastes and styles are offered. Research evaluation has shown the concerts bring recognised benefits to their audiences, from the emotional release the music brings, the stimulating of dementia patients, Many of you will recognise her as the the recovery of speech in the words of songs for stroke patients, to the bringing of moments of joy, young woman on the buggy with her two relaxation and engagement to children with acute illnesses. dogs, Sammy and CJ. 5 INVERKEITHING MEDICAL GROUP SURGERY NEWS Dad Bod - A family friend said he was going to work on his Dad bod. He has accepted that he is older, he has two children under 5 and is juggling work and family, so there is hardly time for exercise, but there is time for sports and beer. This got lots of laughs, and I admit, I went through a phase of ‘accepting’ too. I was just lazy and kidding myself that I have a fast metabolism (I don’t). So I started making small changes, I walk to get my patients, I try to exercise at least 30mins three times a week, I drink less alcohol (lots of empty calories there!) and I have looked at my portion sizes. I recommend the Handy Guide to Portion Sizes as a quick simple tool, apparently a serving of pasta for me should be the size of one clenched fist, and sadly I have small hands. I am not a big fan of diets but if you review your portion sizes you will be eating less carbohydrates, more fruit and vegetables and healthy protein. I am feeling the benefits, my clothes fit better and I can now run a 5K comfortably. Even my girls are on board. I just need to convince another family member to work on his Dad bod. 7 Dalgety Bay Bowling Club

In last month’s edition of the Diary I advised that Dalgety Bay Gents were through to the semi-final of the West Fife Gents Top 5. They won their semi-final against the Northern Bowling Club and then went on to win a nail biting final against Headwell Bowling Club.

Tea workers are paid remember this could change. Progress has definitely been less than £2 per day. Housing, sanitation, medical facilities and schools (which made however, in that the land transfer has taken place and under India law have to be provided by estate owners) are far below acceptable all the funding is now confirmed. standards. Estate managers effectively control all aspects of workers’ lives. All the major UK brands buy tea from Assam and all were well aware of the conditions there. The Fairtrade campaign called on the six biggest UK tea brands to tell their customers which estates they buy from. By shining a light on exploitation, the hope was that that would be a significant first step towards improving conditions on estates. With pressure from the Fairtrade movement and over 15,000 members of the public contacting tea companies, the good news is that all six major brands (Clipper, PG Tips, Tetley, Typhoo, Twinings and Yorkshire Tea) and two that had not been targeted (Ringtons and Marks & Spencer) now publish the list of estates they buy tea from. Information on this may be found on the Traidcraft Exchange web site (www.traidcraft.org.uk/tea-answers). Please continue to support the principles of Fairtrade – by buying Fairtrade products you really can make a difference. So, put your feet up and raise a cuppa – to Fairtrade! If you would like to become a Fairtrade supporter or would like more information about Fairtrade, please contact Winnie Wood, Chair (822516) or Robin Arnott, Secretary (822293). Have a look at our web site (www.fairtrade- We will let you all know via our Facebook page and in the dalgetybay.org.uk); check out our local Fairtrade Directory and read about Fairtrade ‘Beyond 2015 and towards 2030’. He talked about the group’s objectives which are to manage, maintain and improve the woodlands, enhance their biodiversity and to involve the community. A presentation was then given by Phil Evans of the Community Council who told us of the plans for the Town Centre Development and of the formation of Dalgety Community Trust. The latter is relevant to us as the ownership of the woods will be transferred from the Community Council to the Community Trust. We have a good number of volunteers helping in work parties now, but are always happy to see more. However, in common with many groups, we are short of committee members, in particular to help to organise work parties and to help with administration, e.g. applying for grants. We are very keen to try and keep the group strong in order to keep achieving our objectives. If you would like to help in any way, please get in touch. Club Opening Times: Enjoy the woods. The coastline alongside Dalgety Bay boasts a whole variety of different types of seaweed, many of which seem to have very memorable names. In and amongst the gutweed and the sea lettuce, you may have spotted the occasional piece of greyish- white seaweed and thought, like me, that it had been bleached by the sun or was just dead and decaying. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Not only is white its natural colour, it is very much alive, although not in the way that you might expect. What appears to be a piece of seaweed is in fact an animal – or more precisely a colony of animals known as bryozoans. To make things more confusing, this particular bryozoan is commonly called hornwrack, which makes it sound like a seaweed, but this is just the result of it being frequently misidentified. Hornwrack can be found on exposed coastlines throughout the north Atlantic. Each colony is made up of tiny individual animals known as zooids, which are filter feeders. Each zooid has a crown of miniature tentacles with which it filters food from the water in a similar way to coral. During its first year of life, the colony starts off as a flat incrustation on a hard surface such as a stone or a shell. At this stage it resembles sea mat, its close relative which grows on seaweed, lending it a crusted or scaly appearance. In its second year, however, the hornwrack colony starts to grow vertically, resulting after several years of growth in the blunt, frond- like structure that we may find washed up on the beach.
