The site contains a range of habitats including the raised bog of Shelforkie Moss, together with base-rich flush and fen communities surrounding a group of three artificial lochs. The lochs are important as a roost for wintering Greylag and Pink-footed Geese. The southern boundary of the site runs, in part, along the Allan Water.
The raised bog is one of the largest in the Tayside region. The flush and fen communities support a relatively high number of plant species, including several of restricted distribution.
