‘recreating the collective Practice of Players of PluckeD string instruments in the seventeenth century’ Vincent Dumestre this reCording was added in 2005 to the large and diversified disCography of your ensemble le poème harmonique on the alpha label. sinCe you are yourself ENGLISH a lutenist and theorbist, was the idea of devoting a whole programme to your instrument and its family a sort of return to basiCs? Vincent Dumestre. Yes, i suppose there was a special appeal in devising a programme focusing on my own instruments, but the idea was entirely in line with the project of Le Poème Harmonique: on the one hand, the rediscovery of forgotten repertories and practices, in this case with the consort of lutes; on the other, alternating between works with large forces and more intimate concerts. were you partiCularly keen to revive this all too little-known repertory for ‘whole Consort’? why did you Choose to do so at that speCifiC moment in your Career? V. D. i had picked out these pieces in the course of time, over a period of several years, in such manuscripts as the Brogyntyn Lute Book, the Dallis Lute Book and Cambridge University MS Dd.3.18. These manuscripts conserved in England and ireland, and the scores printed in Europe testified to the existence of an extraordinarily rich repertory that has virtually disappeared today. The recording provided an opportunity to assemble a group of lutenists, to work on this repertory together and to recreate the collective practice of players of plucked strings instruments in the seventeenth century. The programme was an obvious choice for a disc, since we had never made a recording of instrumental music before.

17

17 did a regular praCtiCe of ensemble musiC for lutes exist in the seventeenth Century – in england and elsewhere in europe? what was its Context: popular and generally oral, or Courtly and learned, essentially seCular? V. D. The surviving documents tend to be linked more to a context of court music, as in the case of the French ballets or the masques of the Elizabethan tradition. Although the themes that were arranged for these forces often had a popular resonance, like Green Sleeves and Callinoe, both of which are even quoted in Shakespeare, ensemble playing presupposed a capacity for improvisation and transposition that amateurs would have been unlikely to possess. it’s true that most of the repertory available to us is English, thanks to composers like Dowland, Johnson, Holborne, Robinson and Danyel, who brought lute playing to its peak in the reigns of Elizabeth i and the Stuart kings. At that period, ensembles consisted either of instruments of a single family – whence the name ‘whole consort’ – or of different families – ‘mixed consort’. As was pointed out by Damien Vaisse, with whom we worked for the original release of this disc, this explains how a purely instrumental repertory developed, one rooted in sacred music, secular songs, folk or aristocratic dances, and court masques. The viol, the lute and the virginal were the primary vectors for this music, in which there was fairly free movement from one register to another, one instrument to the other. This extensive repertory – or reservoir! – was exploited by the musicians of the time, who arranged pieces for their instrument in order to play them in consort. The advantage of a harmony instrument – such as the lute or the virginal – is that it can be both an accompanist, playing the bass and the harmony, and an upper voice that plays the melody. Plucked string instruments were also very frequently used in the italian court entertainments of the sixteenth century, which called for large instrumental ensembles.

18

18 ‘i wanteD to evoke the rePertory in the liveliest way i coulD.’ ENGLISH

how Can it be possible, when the lute was so tremendously fashionable in the seventeenth Century, that the repertory for Consort of lutes should be so little known today? V. D. it’s true that the surviving repertory specifically for consort of lutes is very limited in comparison to the immense corpus for lute solo. The first reason for this imbalance is editorial: scores intended for such ensembles – which could contain as many as forty lutes – weren’t easy to design or commercialise. So printers gave priority to transcriptions for lute solo, in the form of tablatures. The second reason is the practice itself: since it was improvised to a large extent – as the Cambridge manuscript testifies so eloquently – it couldn’t be completely conveyed in written form. the pieCes that make up this programme Come from different genres – folksongs, anonymous tunes, danCes, and so on. how did you deCide on your seleCtion? V. D. i wanted to evoke the repertory in the liveliest way i could. it was standard practice to reuse widely known themes, which explains the presence of songs like Greensleeves and Callinoe or dance tunes such as Sellengers Ronnde and the Passymeasure Galliard. We also had to find a place for contrapuntal works on a set melody or model, like Parsons’s Ut re mi fa sol la or Gibbons’s in Nomine ‘Crye’.

19

19 One can divide the pieces on this programme into several types: first of all, the ‘treble and ground duets’, which present variations for two lutes on an ostinato bass. The harmonic progressions are mostly fairly simple and the ostinato can sometimes be limited to two or three notes, as is the case with the piece Upon la mi re, which comes from an organ collection of the 1560s. Then there’s another category of piece identifiable by the repetition of short musical fragments, but this time inside the polyphonic texture, and no longer just in the bass. These are the ‘in Nomines’. The greater part of the repertory comes from masques, the typically English court entertainments, performed in costume, which were highly fashionable in the early seventeenth century. They were generally composed for a special occasion, on a mythological or allegorical theme, and organised around five danced entries. Between each dance, the vocal music was accompanied by the lute. The audience participated in the fourth entry, while the last (the antimasque) was usually comical or farcical in nature. The song Love is strange which gives the recording its title is thought to come from The Triumph of Peace by William Lawes and Simon ives, performed in 1634. We find popular dances like the galliard and the pavan in the masques, but with Holborne or Dowland they take on a more elaborate form. Other dances retain their initial character, such as Trenchmore and Sellengers Ronnde, both of irish origin, and Canaries and Corn Yairds, which were originally Scottish.

20

20 ‘the lute as a harmony instrument is the founDation of my Project ENGLISH anD my ensemBle.’ we’re most used to hearing the lute in a Continuo group (and therefore in a dynamiC and harmoniC role), aCCompanying a solo voiCe, or performing an arrangement. would you say that here, in this type of repertory, it’s all these things at onCe? it’s easy enough to imagine these purely instrumental melodies with words attaChed . . . V. D. Let’s take the example of Dowland’s famous Lachrymæ Pavan: the composer subsequently set it to the text ‘Flow my teares’ in his Second Booke of Ayres and wrote seven versions of it for consort of viols in Seven Teares. And there are also countless tablatures of it for lute. The writers of the period didn’t hesitate to add words to Trenchmore, Sellengers Ronnde, Callinoe and of course Green Sleeves. The lute as a harmony instrument is the foundation of my project and my ensemble. it’s a remarkably flexible instrument in the way it can adapt to different musical situations; the Elizabethan period exploited its full contrapuntal and melodic potential. indeed, it was this aspect that took pride of place at the time, since the basso continuo had not yet acquired its later supremacy.

21

21 you present with your partners here an extremely varied assortment of timbres – seven different lutes, a mandore, two Citterns and an arChCittern, two theorbos, a guitar and a double virginal. how did you deCide whiCh timbres to use in whiCh pieCes? V. D. The first thing i always do is to determine the instrumentarium that was available in a given period and context. Then i make my choice in terms of what the score seems to call for. it’s a question more of material pragmatism than of personal or collective whim. Whatever one chooses, the colour of the ensemble of lutes is quite unprecedented – a really luxuriant sonority, with clashes, timbres colliding with or sliding towards each other. You will hear certain some rarer timbres such as those of the cittern and the archcittern, with its strings made of brass and not gut, or the mandore, a lute with a flat back and six single strings. The virginal, which Pierre Hantaï plays solo in Thomas Morley’s Galiarda and in two Toys, is a Flemish instrument of the type known as ‘mother and child’: the ‘child’ instrument sounds at a higher pitch (4’ register) and can be placed on top of the ‘mother’ instrument, which sounds at 8’. When that is done, the coupled registers sound together. The strings, when plucked in the middle, produce a sound quite close to that of the lute.

Jahrhunderts sehr in Mode waren.
