NASNTI Program Final Grant Year October starts the final year of the NASNTI Grant Program. Our

final theme Maintaining Cultural Identity examines the meaning of cultural identity and the significance culture has in our community, state, country, and worldwide. Start your cultural journey this month by viewing the video, ‘6 Minutes and 13 Seconds of Your Time’; The Making of the NASNTI Native Art Exhibit, a compilation of images and videos tracking six months of work to complete the project . The video is set to release Tuesday, October 13th. This month’s NASNTI Newsletter highlights the exhibit’s donors, Bill and Karen Hooten and Kelly and Judy Kirk .

The Hootens’ donated the painting, Standing Alone , an acrylic on canvas, by Edmond Joshua Jr . and the base relief sculpture, The Survivor by Phillip Coon . The Hootens’ were longtime residents and business owners in Seminole County before Standing Alone relocating to City in 2020. Artist Edmond Joshua Jr. A graduate of Seminole High School, Bill was the second -generation owner/ operator of Hooten Oil Company among other ventures. Karen was a student of the Seminole State College Fine Arts program, where she studied ceramics, and eventually completed her studies at East Central . For years, Karen has volunteered as a docent at the Sam Noble Museum at the Universi- ty of Oklahoma, specializing in the history and cultures of Native peoples to what today is known as Oklahoma. The artist, Edmond Joshua Jr., was a sculptor and painter. His chosen media were oil, acrylic, watercolor, pencil, pen, ink, and stone.

SSC Emeritus Art Professor Kelly Kirk and his wife, Judy, donated the art piece, The Brave , painted by Gary Montgomery. A member of the Seminole Tribe, Mr. Montgomery, is an award -winning artist, and his artwork has been The Brave shown throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. Artist Gary Montgomery

The only sculpture in the exhibit, The Survivor (Nak yekcen ropottvte) was also donated by Bill and Karen Hooten. The bas relief sculpture, ‘bas’, (pronounced ‘bah’/like a sheep) is a French word meaning low relief.

Tim Stanley, Tulsa World Journalist, wrote about Phillip Coon, a member of the Mvskoke Creek Tribe, his family, and his life as a World War II Veteran. Stanley states, ‘he was a decorated World War II Veteran and survivor of the infamous Bataan Death March who persevered through three years as a Japanese prisoner of war’ (https:// tulsaworld.com/obituaries/localobituaries/phillip -coon -wwii -pow -and -bataan -death -march -survivor -dies/ article_a61a88ce -dbb9 -5455 -b326 -fe6a8b0d69c9.html) .

7 Virtual Transfer Day Days Until... Thursday, October 8, 2020

There are exactly 7 days until Virtual Transfer Day ! Currently, the institutions scheduled to speak live are , East Central University, , Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma University, , Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and the University of Central Oklahoma. Each institution is set for 15 -30 -minute intervals.

Just added: Army National Guard , University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, and Missouri Southern State University. You can choose more than one!

October starts NASNTI’s final grant year, and Transferring is one of the program’s last initiatives. So, while you continue to organize and prepare yourself for Virtual Transfer Day and Transfer Week , the NASNTI Newsletter will continue to highlight Seminole State College Alumni.

This month, read transfer advice from SSC ’02 Alumna and SSC Admissions & Records Clerk, Jessica Guinn . Ms. Guinn encourages all transfer students to speak to your advisor regarding transferring before your SSC Graduation.

When I graduated from SSC and was ready to transfer, I worried about knowing all the steps, in order to do so.

What advice would you give upcoming transferring SSC Graduates?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and utilize your Advisors and Instructors!

National Transfer Student Week

October 19 through October 23 National Transfer Student Week or NTSW was created to ‘celebrate transfer students and the professionals who support them on their journey.’

NASNTI has partnered with the SSS/STEM Grant Team, Financial Aid Department Team and the SSC Help Center to offer some helpful webinar presentations throughout National Transfer Week.
