Brown Lesa Lockford © 2006 Maria DeRose All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Searching for Wonder Women: Examining Women’s Non-violent Power in Feminist Science Fiction, examines how works of Feminist Science Fiction (from various media, especially literature, film, and television) can be used as engaged, critical pedagogical tools for teaching a wide variety of feminist and critical race theories concerning issues of power / empowerment and subjectivity. In each chapter, I describe how I have used particular FSF works in the classroom and how each one fosters discussion on the particular topic / issue. In Chapter I, “Examining Power, Violence, Masculinity and ‘Tough Girls,’” I deconstruct commonly held definitions of power (especially those with links to violence, patriarchy and hegemony) and demonstrate how works of FSF can encourage students to think about cultural power in relationship to the dispersal of resources. Through an analysis of Charmed, this chapter also displays the complexities of examining the links between violence and power. Chapter II, “Telling Our Stories: Women’s Voices in Feminist Science Fiction,” focuses on the power of language to construct alternate realities in opposition to non- inclusive, “dominant” cultural narratives, and also on storytelling as a means to literally “give voice” to marginalized groups. Chapter III, “‘The Women Men Don’t See:’ Women's Strategic Invisibility as Potential Empowerment,” analyzes stories of literal and metaphorical invisibility in order to discuss issues of women's subjectivity and voice, invisibility / hypervisibility through iv sexualization and objectification, and also “passing" as a member of the dominant race / gender / sexuality. Finally, my chapter “Ecofeminism as Anti-domination Activism” examines the “culture of domination” present in how cultural ideologies treat both women (and other marginalized groups) and the environment. Throughout my dissertation, I use personal narratives and references to students’ discussion comments in order to demonstrate how, after studying various feminist theories of media, identity, and voice, they all discovered their own non-violent source and definition of power. I use their stories and analyses to discuss society's potential to construct more diverse, inclusive definitions of power. v For Kevin vi ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS If it takes a village to raise a child, then I can certainly admit that it took an entire community at BGSU to get this dissertation completed.     BELK, PATRICK NOLAN, Ph.D. Let's Just Steal the Rockets: 1970s Feminist Science Fiction as Radical Rhetorical Revisioning. (2014) Directed by Dr. Hephzibah Roskelly. 204 pages. Feminist utopian writings from the 1970s included a clearly defined rhetorical purpose: to undermine the assumption of hidden male privilege in language and society. The creative conversation defining this rhetorical purpose gives evidence of a community of peers engaging in invention as a social act even while publishing separately. Writers including Samuel Delany, Joanna Russ, James Tiptree, Jr., and Ursula Le Guin were writing science fiction as well as communicating regularly with one another during the same moments that they were becoming fully conscious of the need to express the experiences of women (and others) in American literary and academic society. These creative artists formed a group of loosely affiliated peers who had evolved to the same basic conclusion concerning the need for a literature and theory that could finally address the science of social justice. Their literary productions have been well-studied as contemporaneous feminist utopias since Russ’s 1981 essay “Recent Feminist Utopias.” However, much can be understood about their rhetorical process of spreading the meme of feminist equality once we go beyond the literary productions and more closely examine their letters, essays, and commentary. This dissertation will show that this group of utopian fiction writers can be studied as exactly that: a loosely connected, collaborative, creative group of peers with specific ideas about how humanity could be better if assumptions of male superiority were undermined and with the rhetorical means to spread those ideas in ways which changed the literary and social conversation.

Essas obras denunciam como uma forma de ciência, alavancada pelo patriarcado, manipula o corpo da mulher, principalmente nas questões que remetem ao biológico. Esse tipo de leitura, na realidade, instiga debates fundamentais para o feminismo, cobrindo desde a discussão em torno de formas alternativas de reprodução humana, tais como se apresentam na ficção e já aconteceram ou estão para acontecer, envolvendo maior ou menor teor decisório das mulheres sobre seu próprio corpo, até questionamentos sobre a idéia do ciborgue, altamente polêmica e trazida para o cerne dos estudos feministas com as obras pioneiras de Donna Haraway.     Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2003-2004 Dear Friends and Family: Another year of wonderful experiences for our family passed by too quickly in 2003! It is, of course, of great note that our house construction is still in transition, with grand hopes that it will be complete in 2004. It really really is in the final stages. We had some amazing travels in 2003; kicked off by a family trip to Washington in March so that Joe could receive a national award, the Ernest Lynton Award for Faculty Public Service at the American Association for Higher Education meeting. We had dinner with Mrs. Lynton and members of the sponsoring organization, the New England Resource Center for Higher Education at the University of Massachusetts. We had a chance to tour DC with the kids too, and the whole family was able to join with Dad when he got the award. They even sat through Joe’s short speech! All winter and spring, Joseph prepared for his first communion, which we celebrated in June; Joseph's godfather, Nick Lomako, along with Kathy Lomako, brought Grandma Anne from Detroit, and joined Aunt Sandy and cousin Tim with the family at the Anchor Bar for wings and then a Bisons's game in the evening. The non traditional celebration topped off the ceremony at St. Joe's church. Dad enjoyed being Joseph’s communion class teacher as he was for Claire. Over the past year, Joseph and Carol have continued their efforts at Tae Kwon Do, Joseph has achieved the level of red belt, that is just a few steps from black belt, which he may reach in 2004.
