Castle Donington

Castle Donington is a small market town with a population of 6,416 residents (according to the 2011 Census). It is situated close to the M1/A50 inter change and is also is home to Airport and in close proximity to East Midlands Parkway railway station. The area of Castle Donington covers 608.5 hectares, with a density of 10.5 people per hectare.

Population:

According to the 2011 Census the total population of the built-up urban area of Castle Donington stood at 6,416. In total there were 2,846 households.

The three top sectors in terms of employment in the Castle Donington area are Transport; Storage; Information & Communication (16.0%) - hardly surprising with the Airport and its associated services in such close proximity to the town Wholesale; Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles & Motor Cycles with 15.8% of total employment; followed by Manufacturing (14.2%)

In terms of Types of Employment the 3 categories of Management and Professional, Castle Donington saw 38% of its working population within these sectors, in line with the District as a whole and slightly below the 40% for England & Wales as a whole.

Castle Donington Built-up Area has a higher proportion of its population with Level 4 and above qualifications, compared with the District as a whole with over 28% 16 – 64 year olds at this level. At the opposite end of the scale over 1 in 5 people have no qualifications compared with 26% in the District as a whole and nationally 22.5%. These figures relate to 2011 and since then the number of apprenticeships have risen and those with no qualifications fallen.

Town Centre – types of businesses

In 2017, according to an NWLDC review, there were around 57 retail and service business premises in the town centre, of which 87% were independents. This is significantly higher than the national average of 67%. There is a good mix of retail and service establishments and also pubs and cafes. There are 20 (35%) retail establishments; 9 (16%) pubs/eateries; 10 (18%) and hairdressers/barbers/beauty establishments.

Vacancy rates

As of January 2018 there were 2 vacant town centre premises, accounting for 3.5% of the stock. Business/Industrial Parks

Due to its excellent geographical position on the inter change of the M1/A42 & A50; being located between the largest 3 East Midlands Cities and the home for the UK’s largest pure freight airport, it is a key centre for all types of industry. There are a wide range of industrial; distribution and service industry parks.

East Midlands Distribution Park (EMDC) is just to the north of the village – connecting onto the A50. EMDC is recognised as a strategic distribution location serving both the East Midlands and the entire UK now being the home to substantial occupiers including Marks & Spencer, Birlea Furniture, Interlevin Refrigeration and Klober Building Products.

Again to the north of the village there are a number of Industrial and Service businesses based on Trent Lane; Willow Farm and Boundary Court.

On the edge of the town, SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway (SLPEMG) is a 700 acre development with planning consent for up to 6,000,000 sq ft of logistics accommodation. The development incorporates a 50 acre Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) which will include a rail freight terminal, capable of handling up to sixteen 775m freight trains per day, container storage and HGV parking.

Adjacent business and distribution parks surround the Airport, including Pegasus Park which is on the south-eastern side of the town. Home to many airport-related businesses such as DHL; Royal Mail; UPS; TNT; Nippon Express and Norske Global, as well as Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC); National Grid; Western Power Distribution; and PKF Cooper Parry.

DHL have recently invested £90m in their Express Hub alongside the Airport and there are also companies such as Tui; Jet2; and the Company. Regus have a modern office hub on Pegasus Park and in February 2018 it was announced that UPS are building a £100m air freight terminal which will create 1,400 jobs alongside the airport perimeter.
