5 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org VISIT TO THE UCAS FAIR On Tuesday 24 June 2014, Sixth Form students visited the University of , Bedford campus for the UCAS Fair. This is an event available to all Sixth Form students, offering heaps of information about all universities across the United Kingdom.

Arriving at the event, we were directed across to the Sports Hall at the campus, which was packed full of rows and rows of promotional stands for different universities. As we walked around, we had the opportunity to approach each stand and talk to someone about what courses that specific university offered, what the entry requirements are and what the university is like as a whole.

I found it extremely beneficial that the people I was talking to on each stand were in fact university students who had graduated, or are still attending that university. This means they could share first hand experiences and provide crucial information that I couldn’t find by looking online. For example, we learned about the citys in which each university is situated, how far away the town centre is from the accommodation, and what the night life is like!

Outside of the Sports Hall, there was a marquee filled with even more promotional stands for different universities, as well as a food tent, where a range of burgers, pasta pots and confectionary were available to purchase. In addition to this, there was another marquee on the field, where student bands performed their own music live out in the sunshine, which created a really good atmosphere for the whole day.

The majority of us had never been to a UCAS Fair before and didn’t know what to expect, and therefore, we were all pleasantly surprised with how well the day went and how much we had learnt. Not only did we come home with a stack of prospectuses for universities we did not know existed, but some students who had never even considered university are now starting to contemplate applying.

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 6

I asked fellow students about their day at the UCAS Fair, and these are a few of the responses …

“The visit was very beneficial for deciding whether or not to pursue future education. I would definitely recommend going.” – Jamie Nolan, 13RJB

“I thought I didn’t want to go to Uni, but now I am considering the benefits of having a degree.” – Liam Bond, 13RJB

“It provided me with a wide range of choices that I hadn’t considered before!” – Laura Harris, 13RJB

“Going in to the experience not quite knowing what to expect, I was positively surprised by the vast range of universities from all over the country which were there to offer assistance and information in regards to the courses which they offered. The casual environment with students from other schools and colleges gave an insight into university life which was enhanced by the live band and refreshment facilities. As someone who was undecided of the benefits that university would bring me personally, I have had some encouragement which has provoked thought into potentially applying an undergraduate course in Media studies. “ Ellis Dawkins

“It's strange how overwhelming picking a course and university can be. It's a place to go and thing to do really, yet somehow it dictates the start of our future career and flicks a switch that turns us into adults. From the outside, the Sports Hall which held the dozens of universities seemed like a group of travelling salesmen with magic beans that could perfect our future, but after spending some time inside talking to the people there, really they were signposts, pointing us in the right direction and letting us know the right path to take.” Matthew Sibley

Thank you to Miss Hart for organising the event as well Miss Gillen, Miss Robinson and Mr Stevens for supervising the students during the day.

7 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org RACE FOR LIFE

On Sunday 22 June 2014 I took part in the Race for Life at Stockwood Park in . It was a really hot day and about 17,000 people took part. I ran with my mum and my little sister and finished the 5km course in about an hour – we ran and walked because my mum had trouble keeping up with me! I wanted to raise money for my cousin who has a brain tumour and I managed to raise £65. The photograph shows me with my medal. I really enjoy raising money for people who are not as fortunate as others and next year I want to do the mud assault course which looks like great fun.

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 8 YEAR 12 BUSINESS HSBC STOCK MARKET “The Business Visit to the University allowed us to use skills from our Business Studies lessons to compete with other schools from the area. We used a program that mimicked the stock market in a virtual world that each team could see, and we competed to see who could make the most profit in the allocated time. The stock market featured real-time news updates that affected the value of the stocks. Each team was made up of two people, split into the Data Analyst and the Media Analyst.

The Media Analyst’s job was to watch the news stories as they came in and work out how each story affected the stocks, and then relay the information to the Data Analyst so that the team could decide whether they wanted to try and capitalise on the change in stock value (by either buying or selling affected stocks) or just waiting to see how the market was affected by changes in one stock’s value.

Our team managed to finish 7th out of 44 teams, which we think was an impressive feat. The day ended with a lecture about how the financial crisis came about, and about how even the smallest of conditions can affect the market as a whole. Despite Mr Hurst’s questionable driving and parking abilities! we managed to get back to school safely, and the visit was an enjoyable day where we gained some experience with stocks.”

9 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org YEAR 10 STOCK MARKET CHALLENGE Stock Market Challenge at University of Bedfordshire prepares school children for workplace Tuesday June 17 2014 Year 10 Business students were given a taste of the excitement of trading on a live stock market as they took part in a Business competition at the University of Bedfordshire. Some 200 students from schools across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire had their decision-making and risk-taking skills put to the test in a two- day simulated trading task.

The Stock Market Challenge, a joint initiative funded by HSBC and supported by the University in partnership with 10 Lane Learning, saw teams of students from year 10 battle to manage a fund of shares and foreign currency. They dealt with HSBC’s staff, who were ‘traders’ recreating the ‘real time’ trading floor of old.

Wednesday 18 June 2014 Year 12 students were involved in a similar competition, the Investment Challenge, on the next day. Their task, in teams of two, was based mainly on computers where they got a feel of real-life stock and shares investment trading as it is today in the real world.

The event was aimed to help students leave school prepared for the world of work with the capabilities and confidence to handle future higher education and career decisions, whilst developing their mathematics, business and computer science knowledge.

Gregg Carnaffan, HSBC Regional Services Manager Retail Banking and Wealth Management South and East Region, said: “The Stock Market Challenge is a fantastic way for young people from schools to build their understanding of the business world whilst developing their skills and having fun.”

Michael Kennedy, University Head of Department of Accounting & Finance, said: “At the University we believe it is essential that we focus on developing the qualifications and skills of our young people, to ensure the appropriate skills base is in place to take advantage of the job opportunities now and in the future.”

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 10 YEAR 10 STOCK MARKET CHALLENGE Year 10 Business - Stock Market Challenge We had the opportunity to visit the University of Bedfordshire, for a Business visit about the stock exchange. We found the whole day enjoyable and educational. We all got assigned job roles within the stock market. Steven Dawkins, and Joshua Schliebe worked on the stock floor in buying and selling our investments.

Cheyne Howard worked as the Media Analyst and did a great job working with the news and radio reports; she also won a book voucher award for her great work. Anthony Ridler put in great participation throughout the day as the Investment Analyst; he also won a book voucher for his gr eat work.

I was the Finance Manager of the group and I handled the group’s finance and created profit and loss accounts throughout the day to make sure we weren’t making any losses. We started off at the beginning of the stock trade at £2,000 and by the end of the five day week we gained a profit of £32,400. Therefore, we made an overall turnover of £34,400.

In conclusion the event was great fun and we all learnt from what we were told by the people from HSBC who helped run the event. We were able to use many skills such as, communication, team work, problem solving, and also we had to make an overall decision in short amounts of time.

It definitely kept us all on the edge of our seats as it was a risk taking experience. We all thoroughly enjoyed working in the stock trade market and it is something we would love to do again and even consider for work in the future.

11 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org SKY SPORTS - ‘Living for Sports’

“On 27 June 2014, all of the hard work that the ‘Sky Sports – Living for Sports’ students had put into this project finally paid off! We had a successful and enjoyable afternoon with the local primary schools at All Saints Academy; seeing them put into practice what we had been teaching them for the past few weeks. After weeks of planning the Festival for the primary schools and making sure that everything would run smoothly, we visited the schools on rotation with Miss Mannion and Mr Conway, teaching them our chosen sports (Handball, Tchoukball, Rounders, Athletics and Danish Longball .The primary school students were very enthusiastic when they were trying something new. It was a rewarding experience having them look up to us to as leaders and role models and them showing as much respect as they did.

The enthusiasm that this project created, not just with the primary schools but with us leaders too, was incredible, and it gave us a chance to learn new skills and utilise them when coaching sports, also building on our social skills and confidence levels by working with people outside our friendship groups. Overall, I think that the Sky Sports – Living for Sport project has been very successful and, hopefully, we have inspired the younger generation to get involved in more sports and carry on with what they have learnt from us.

“Well done to all who took part; we worked well as a team and pulled it off! Also, thanks to Ian Rose for teaching us about building up from something small into something amazing! Finally, a massive thanks to Mr Conway for helping us throughout the project; we wouldn’t have been able to do it without you, you’ve been a great mentor!”

Well here we are! Another year nearly over - all our Year 11 students worked very hard during their GCSE Exams and we look forward to them seeing the fruits of their labours rewarded when we give them their results in August. The transition day was a great day for them all as they said their goodbyes. After all that hard work it was time to play hard at the Annual Prom, once again at Putteridgebury, where the weather was kind to us and it was great to see our students in all their finery. We now wish them well for the future.

15 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 2014 ASAD YEAR 7 WORLD CUP FESTIVAL What is it? As part of our BTEC course, our Year 13 sports class were delighted to announce a World Cup-based event which was available to the Year 7 students within the Academy. The day was a lot of fun for everybody involved, as well as educational for the Year 7 students as they had booklets containing questions based on their chosen countries. The event took place on Wednesday 18 June and Year 7 participants were off- timetable as it ran throughout the day.

Rules and regulations Each Form Group in Year 7 had to have two teams consisting of -8 11 players and each team had to have 4 girls (3 of whom must be on the pitch at all times). Each team had their own managers who looked after the team all day to make sure the younger students were not confused about where they should be or when they would be playing. The teams were named after the top 12 world-ranked countries and the Year 13s took it upon themselves to allocate which Form Groups would have which teams.

Incentives There were incentives for the tournament as the winner of the whole tournament was awarded with a trophy as well as medals, and runners up also received medals. Every player involved in the tournament received a certificate and Vivo miles for taking part in the event.

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 16 OUTSTANDING ATHLETE AT ALL SAINTS Kelsey Taylor, in 7AD, has been an outstanding athlete this year. She has not only represented the Academy at the District Athletics meeting in both the Shot Put and the Discus but has also represented the District at the County Athletics event. Her account of the day is given below:

“When I got to the Athletic Stadium in Bedford, all I could see was athletes who must have been doing their events for a long time. I thought "great, got some big competition today”, but then when I started to do my events I felt a lot more comfortable with myself than I did when I came in. When I threw the Shot Put I thought that wasn’t me throwing, but I was over the moon with myself when I found out I won the Shot Put for my age group. It was a different story with my Discus though; my first two throws were the worst, by the second throw I thought that’s it I’ve lost, but… for my third throw I gave it my all and I threw the furthest I have ever thrown, with a distance of 19m 36cms. When I went up to get the Gold for the Shot Put and Discus, I couldn’t believe what they said to me, they said “congratulations you have won the county record, you are 11th in the world, you are 4th in Anglia and you are 4th in East .” I am also affiliated to England athletics now. On 6 July 2014 I got an email from England Athletics saying that I am 2nd in the whole of UK, , Germany and the whole of Ireland, for my age group. I am now 9th in the world for Discus. WORLD WAR ONE DAY On 16 July 2014 the Humanities Curriculum Area organised a World War One day for Years 7 & 9 where the students got a feel for what life was like in 1914. Students were visited by the History Squad who told them about life during the First World War from a soldier and nurse’s point of view. It was a fun packed day where the students got the opportunity to handle real artefacts from the time and they spent the day in Tutor Groups completing activities learning about the Great War. The Day was arranged as part of the centenary events commemorating 100 years since the start of the First World War and proved to be an eye-opening and hands on experience. Lest we forget.

The work carried out by the Dove Self-Esteem Project and Beat is focused specifically on preventative work, aiming to help strengthen body confidence. All Year 7 and 9 students were given the opportunity to take part in the workshops that aim to give 11-14 year olds the tools to build positive self -esteem and provide a platform for group discussion on image related concerns. The workshop covered the following topics:

Friends and relationships Teasing and bullying Growing up and body image Boosting self-esteem Role of the media

Both year groups interacted well and many felt they had learnt something during the session. Students were surprised by how images in the media are manipulated, and the impact this can have on us.

The workshop also covered how other people’s communication can affect our self-esteem and vice versa.

Students were exceptionally well behaved throughout both workshops.

19 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org PARENT VIEW Dear Parents/Carers

I am very keen that you, as Parents/Carers, have the opportunity to take part in a confidential survey about All Saints Academy. The survey is run by OFSTED and Parents/Carers can register their views once every year.

It would be very useful if you could visit www.parentview.ofsted.gov.uk to register and then to complete the questionnaire, which should not take you very much time at all. Once on the website you will be asked to register and log in. In order to do so you will need a valid email address. The page will ask you to ‘register now’, to provide your email address and then to confirm it. It will ask you if you are a parent or carer, how many schools your children attend and then to register. The results will help us improve the service we offer to you, our parents and to your children.

If you require any assistance with this, please do not hesitate to contact the Academy.

23 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org ATTENDANCE Rewarding good attendance at All Saints Academy It’s been a very good year for attendance levels at All Saints Academy. With our raised Attendance target of 95% I am pleased to say that as at 4 July attendance stood at 94.91% just 0.09% away from our target. Students who maintained their 100% for the full school year have continually been rewarded throughout the year and this term’s rewards will be given out on the last day of term. Likewise, all students who have achieved the Academy target of 95% and above will be rewarded.

Four Year 11 students were presented with a £50.00 cheque at their prom for 100% attendance throughout their time at the Academy. Well done to Nikini Jayakody, Chandler Russell, Hannah Stevens and Alannah Vickers.

A huge thank you to GO BOWLING Dunstable for their very kind continued support and donations of bowling tickets.

Looking forward to September 2014 Medical Appointments A reminder to Parents/Carers that medical appointments should be made out of school hours where possible. We do appreciate that this is sometimes difficult and would ask that students only take the necessary time out of school, not the whole day. Medical evidence will be requested for all students.

Punctuality Please ensure that your child arrives on time for school. Students need to be on the Academy premises by 8.25am so that they will not be late to registration at 8.30am. Students who arrive late will be required to do a 20 minute detention on the same day, and failure to attend will result in an hour detention with their Achievement Leader on a Friday afternoon.

Attendance & Persistent Absentees The Academy attendance target is 95%; any students below this will be monitored and if they drop below 85% All Saints Academy will need medical evidence to be able to approve any absence. Medical evidence can be any one of the following: copy of an appointment card/letter, a note from the GP/ Practice Nurse giving reason for absence, a copy of a prescription made out to the student, or any other suitable documentary evidence. A decision on whether or not to authorise the absence will be made by the Academy.

Absence All Absences should be reported at the earliest possible convenience on each day of absence, by calling 01582 619700 and selecting Option 2. Please be aware if the Academy has not been advised of a student absence there is every likelihood that Mr Copperwheat (Access and Inclusion Attendance Officer) will carry out a door knock and visit the family home.

Holidays during term time Mr Copperwheat is supporting the Academy in the use of Fixed Penalty Notices where Parents/Carers take students out of the Academy for a holiday. Penalty Notice fines for holidays in term time are £60 per parent per child if paid within 21 days and £120 if paid between 22 and 28 days.

Central Bedfordshire Access & Inclusion Service have asked us to inform parents/carers of the following. Following consultation with schools it has been agreed that from September 2014, when a school asks for a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) to be issued to the parents/carers of a child who has been absent from school without authorisation, the Access and Inclusion Service will no longer issue an initial warning to the parents, but will proceed directly to issue the £60 Notice. All other aspects of the process remain the same:

 if a child accrues 10 or more sessions of unauthorised absence (this will include holidays taken during term time) over a 12 week period a school will request the Access and Inclusion Service to issue a FPN of £60 to the parent(s)/ carer(s);

 if this £60 is not paid within 21 days it increases to £120;

 if this £120 is not paid within 28 days the Access and Inclusion Service will then prosecute the parent(s)/carer(s) in the local magistrates court. On conviction the parent(s) can be fined up to £1000.

• FPNs are issued on the basis of one per parent per child.

Change in personnel I would like to take this opportunity to let students Parents & Carers know that I will be moving on to pursue a different role within our Academy in September. I look forward to working with the students in my new position as Pupil Premium Manager. Thank you for your continued support and commitment in ensuring that attendance at All Saints Academy continues to improve. The Attendance Officer in September will be Deborah Grayson.

25 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org FIRST AID PROCEDURES

A reminder to Parents/Carers that the Academy does not employ a nurse and members of staff are not medically trained. However, a number of staff are trained in First Aid. The following procedure should be followed in the event of a first aid incident or in the event that a student feels unwell:

 If a student feels unwell, they should report to Student Reception where a first aid trained member of staff will make an assessment. Students are encouraged in the majority of cases to return to lessons unless they are obviously very unwell. It is worth noting that the Academy cannot issue painkillers to students and any student reporting a headache will be assessed, offered a drink of water and encouraged to return to class as soon as possible with the option of returning if they continue to feel

unwell or their symptoms become worse.

 If a first aid trained member of staff feels that a student is too unwell to remain in school, they will contact the Parent/Carer to get permission to send the student home or to make arrangements for the

student to be collected.

 Only once all of these steps have been followed are students permitted to sign out of the Academy. Students should NOT contact their Parents/Carers via mobile phones and ask to be collected without the above procedures having been followed, otherwise the absence will be recorded as unauthorised.

The Academy thanks Parents/Carers for their continued support in this regard.

EMERGENCY CONTACT DETAILS

A reminder for all Parent/Carers to please advise the Academy of any change of address or telephone numbers. It is important that our records are up-to-date, and the correct telephone numbers are vital in order that we can make contact in the event of an emergency. VISITORS’ CAR PARKING Visitors’ parking on site is limited but we are pleased to advise that there are six allocated short-stay parking spaces (including one designated disabled parking space) immediately outside the Main Reception for visitors to the Academy, including our Parents/Carers. Please note that, for the safety of our students, the main gates on Houghton Road will be closed every am from 8.20 to 8.35 and at the end of the school day from 3.10pm to 3.30pm Monday to Thursday, and 12.55pm to 1.15pm on Fridays.

CHANGE TO SWITCHBOARD OPTIONS Please be aware that the options at switchboard, between 8.00am and 4.00pm (1.00pm on Friday) have been amended. Please listen to the whole message before selecting the option you require.
