In the movie, Saving Private Rya n, Captain Miller (played POSTPOSby ToTm Hanks) leads a group of eight men into German occupied France in A spirit of generosity you order to rescue and bring home a private by the name of James Ryan who can be proud of is the sole survivor of four brothers. Much of the movie depicts the I am sure that many of you are incredible sacrifice of life that takes place in order to return Ryan to his wondering how we did in last grieving mother. The final words that Captain Miller says to Private Ryan week’s special collection. Well, I are these: “Earn it. . . Earn this.” At the end of the movie, a now aged Ryan am not going to tell you the final returns to Captain Miller’s grave in France. He speaks to the gravestone, number until next week because “Every day I think about what you said to me that day on the bridge. I tried presently we are still receiving and recording gifts that were to live my life the best that I could. I hope that was enough. I hope that, at made in that collection – a least in your eyes, I've earned what all of you have done for me.” Ryan then collection that one generous turns to his wife and says, “Tell me I have led a good life. Tell me I’m a individual has promised to good man.” His wife answers, “ You are .” match, dollar-for-dollar, up to $50,000! But, at least allow me Are you worth dying for? The obvious answer that Jesus gives is, “You to say this. There are some very are!” Of course, we think of the sacrificial death of Jesus as not just saving generous people in this parish who donated well over $1,000 to one sole private in a world war but saving all of humanity. Somehow, that that special matching collection! idea that Jesus died for all seems to water down its impact as I reflect upon Now, I don‘t want to say too what his sacrifice means for me personally. Yes, I have heard others say that much because some might think, if I were the only person in all of the created universe, Jesus would have “Well, if the parish reached its become incarnate and suffered crucifixion just in order to save me. But I goal, there is no need for me to still don’t grasp what that means. Perhaps this week’s gospel might help us make my contribution.” However, I invite you to look at feel the impact of his sacrificial love. this from one particular perspective. One man’s Today’s gospel contains another two parables about the Kingdom. The generosity inspired the generosity Kingdom of God may be likened to someone who comes upon a treasure of many, many people – and no buried in a field; then, after hiding the treasure, he goes off and sells all that matter how big or small was your he has to purchase the field. The Kingdom is also likened to a merchant in gift, those who did contribute to search of fine pearls, and having found the pearl of great price, he sells all this collection now feel a deeper sense of connection to the parish that he has to purchase that one pearl. What I would like to suggest is this: and to the projects we want to from the point of view of Jesus, you are that hidden treasure. . . you are that accomplish at this time in our pearl of great price! history. In the end, isn’t that what it is all about? We love our Jesus sees something worthwhile in you – something that is so precious. For parish, and as we see so many one thing, Jesus sees that you are a reflection of the Father. He sees that others making sacrifices and reflection of God in the Samaritan woman, in Zacchaeus, in the woman loving the parish as much as we do – well that just intensifies the caught in adultery, in Judas, in the tax collector and, yes, in you and in me. love and the pride we feel in While others may not see your unspeakable worth and precious value, and belonging to Saint Brigid’s! even if you yourself struggle to see that value in yourself, the simple fact is So, I am keeping the door open that Jesus sees it – and gives up everything – even his life – because you are for some last minute givers – so worth it. that more and more can come on board and feel that they too have made a difference! Can I truly embrace what Someone did for my sake? Would that awareness of having been the object of one man’s sacrifice impact the way I live the rest of my life? 7

The Black Catholic Ministry (a.k.a. MCAA) would like to share with you the rich heritage we have long enjoyed with the Church. Each month we will feature a Black saint. Some names will be familiar, others completely new. Look for this feature beginning in August. We ate on hiatus now, but we meet for one hour at 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month at the Parish Center across the street from the church. Because of Labor Day, the meeting will be on Saturday, September 9th. All are welcome. Bring your ideas, your curiosity, or just your ears for now.

There are ministries akin to ours in several parishes in the diocese, and while we each have distinct personal styles, we are all governed by the diocesan mission statement which is included here in part in response to the issue of our necessity as a group entity.

Our Mission Statement: In order to ensure the participation of Catholics of African Ancestry in every facet of diocesan life, the purpose of the ministry shall be to:

1. Serve the spiritual, cultural, educational, and social needs of Catholics of African Ancestry in the diocese; 2. Encourage further insight and understanding by the church of these needs; 3. Foster vocations to the priesthood, religious life, and deaconate; 4. Stimulate the development and training of lay leaders, especially youth and young adults, of African ancestry to assume leadership roles at the parish and diocesan levels. 5. Promote spiritual and liturgical rites that are synonymous with and culturally akin to people of African ancestry; and 6. Work to identify and eliminate the seeds of racism that seriously affect relationships between Catholics of African Ancestry and those who are not.

We ask that you read the statement and ask yourself what you can bring to the table.

Did you ask yourself what was going on the green by the gazebo on Saturday, June 24th? All those people laughing, eating, and socializing were celebrating the family and the success of students who we awarded academic scholarships. Special thanks to our benefactor, Bill Janetschek for making this possible. Yes, this is one of our more successful programs.

The 2017 awardees are listed as follows: Rose Bearly Bireaux Tea Caines Synthiche Smart Darcelle Demesyeax Jayden Anderson Anneal Bazin Garcelle Demesyeax Alexandra Buck Alexis Lafargue Elijah Dorsainville Elijah Jean Ra chelle Louis Nelda Verna Skielor Madison Dodd
