ABOUT THE FESTIVAL (Legend/History/Myth)
The Kandakali Poonthuruthi Sree Urpazhachi Vettokorumakan Temple is an ancient temple which has centuries old history. Urpazhachi and Vettakkorumakan are the main deities of the temple. There are no sub deities in the temple. The name Kandankali is formed from Kandan and Kali which means Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. The annual festival, Kaliyatta Mahotsavam is conducted during the Malayalam month of Kumbham which increases the vigour of the deities in the temple.

Theyyam The Kaliyatta Mahotsavam is a famous festival in the Vellatam Northern region of Kerala where events such as Theyyam, Music Concerts Vellattam etc are held after vigorous fasting and vows. Classical dances Other cultural programs held during the festival are Music Thiruvathira Concerts, Classical Dances, Thiruvathira (Kerala style Seminars dance form), Kolkali (ritualistic dance with sticks) etc. Kolkali Seminars on spiritual topics are also conducted on the Cultural Programs festival days. Annadanam is believed to be offering of food Annadanam from the God.
