Schools and early years Latest update on schools and early years

Children and young people are getting geared up for a summer of fun as an exciting programme of activities is being delivered by over 100 City of Edinburgh Council services and partner organisations across the Capital. The Get into Summer initiative is part of a nationwide scheme funded by the Scottish Government to create a variety of opportunities for children and their families to play, socialise and re-connect over the summer. The activities will build on the regular summer programmes put on by the Council and partners and are taking place in communities across the city. They will help children and young people to get healthy, creative and most importantly, re-connect with each other after a disrupted school year caused by the pandemic. A key focus of the programme will be activities targeted to those families from low income households who may otherwise struggle to access such experiences during the holidays. The overall programme has a focus on opportunities for youth and children’s work, very young children and their families, with opportunities for sport, outdoor, art and cultural activities. Some of the partner organisations putting on events and providing support include: 6VT Edinburgh City Youth Café, Disability Services, Intercultural Youth , Edinburgh Young Carers, Lochend Football Academy, National Galleries of Scotland, Play2Learn Sports Coaching and Shakti Women’s Aid.

North Edinburgh Arts' Capital Project Update & Notice of General Meeting Wednesday 21 July at 6.30pm held online via Zoom

Dear North Edinburgh Arts Friend, North Edinburgh Arts Board and Director have been working in partnership with Council officers to develop the Planning application for the MacMillan Hub submitted last week. Details and a link to the full application on the planning portal can be accessed here: www.northedinburgharts.co.uk/development NEA are continuing to work on the costs and timetable for the MacMillan Hub, focusing on the extension and refurbishment of our building as an integral part of the Hub. Our Fundraiser, Roger Horam at Red Lynx, and Board continue to apply for funding and have had positive meetings with a range of statutory and third sector funders. On 3 June 2021 the Council agreed to put forward NEA for consideration as part of the Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund. On 10 June 2021 the Council agreed to put NEA, as a key part of the MacMillan Hub, forward for the UK Levelling Up Fund. This fund needs support from our local MP, and we thank Christine Jardine MP for her support. We would be grateful, too, for your support of NEA’s ambitious plan, and welcome any input you may be able to make, on behalf of our community, to decision makers at both the Scottish and Westminster Governments who will be assessing our applications for funding. If you have any questions or want more information please get in touch with us by emailing our Director Kate Wimpress at [email protected] I also would like to invite you to our forthcoming General Meeting on 21 July 2021 at 6.30pm, most likely to be held via Zoom, and would be pleased to speak with you then if you are able to attend. Yours sincerely Lesley Hinds Chair, North Edinburgh Arts on behalf of the North Edinburgh Arts' Board of Trustees

This week, Edinburgh and the Lothians recorded the highest number of COVID cases in Scotland. In response to the high numbers, several community test centres have opened around the city over recent weeks. Free COVID tests are on offer for people who don’t display any symptoms, aiming to break the chain of transmission by catching asymptomatic cases which could still be infectious. Community test centres are open for people with no COVID-19 symptoms: • Walk-up mobile testing unit, Heart of Midlothian Football Club, Wheatfield stand accessed via Wheatfield Street/Place, until Sunday, 11 July • Drive though mobile testing unit at Hibernian Football Club, in the car park behind the east stand accessed off Albion Place/Hawkhill Place until Sunday, 11 July • McDonald Road Library until Saturday, 3 July - test pick-up available • Wester Hailes Library until Saturday, 3 July - test pick-up available • Fountainbridge Library from Monday, 5 July to Saturday, 10 July - test pick-up available • Drumbrae Library Hub from Monday, 5 July to Saturday, 10 July - test pick-up available Find out more about Council services during the pandemic on the Council website. Welcome to your July Newsletter from Heart of Newhaven

This is a newsletter about past, present and future. First: the past. We have been receiving plenty of positive feedback from the Pots of Kindness project. If you remember, this involved pupils from Victoria Primary School potting up edible flowers, herbs and vegetables and distributing them to some of the isolated or elderly members of the community, whose details were supplied by the Pilmeny Development Project. Recipients have been responding. "What a lovely idea. It is so nice to be part of this initiative. As you know I am housebound, so it is great that I can still be part of the community while being at home. I loved the beautiful letter I received from the pupil - what a fantastic idea. Thank you,” said one. Mary from PDP received a phone call once one pack was delivered "Thank you so much for the plant and letter - I absolutely love it. I am delighted with the wee package and the letter from the pupil was adorable. And the man who delivered the package was really friendly - thank you". A few weeks later, the same recipient rang Mary to say "My plant has started sprouting - I have it on my window sill and I check it everyday. It was great getting the instructions on how to help the plant grow. I really am delighted to be part of this project - thank you". "My spinach has started to grow - I love Spinach and I think I might be like Popeye after this. The letter from the pupil was so sweet - thank you,” said another. We’re glad it has proved so welcome.
