Plans to update dog and alcohol controls across the Island have gone out to consultation. New legislation means the Isle of Wight Council and police officers will be gaining new powers to control antisocial behaviour, such as drinking alcohol in public, and dog fouling. In the past, Dog Control Orders and Designated Public Place Orders have been separate pieces of legislation, but on the Island, as in the rest of England, these are now to be combined in the new Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs). The new orders will allow police officers and the Council to continue protecting the Island’s beaches and public open spaces for locals and visitors to enjoy. Many of the rules which have been in place for the past 10 years will remain unchanged under the new PSPOs. Wight Orienteering invite new recruits

Wight Orienteering is looking for participants for their next event, which is being held at St Catherine’s Down, Chale, on Sunday, March 15. Orienteering, which has grown in popularity over the years, is a sport which all people of any age can enjoy in the open countryside, forest, woods and downland. It helps people become more active in body and mind and improves confidence. It has been called ‘the thinking person’s sport’, and is one the whole family can enjoy, and can be an easy walk along paths or an exciting, adventurous run through countryside and forests. As you become more experienced in the sport you become more competitive and can go to larger mainland events, which can be one, two, five or six days long.
